Announcement: Genode OS Framework version 24.05 released

With the tailwind of the Sculpt 24.04 release, we released Genode 24.05 today and I'd like to emphasize the following highlights. First, Sculpt OS can now be run on our custom microkernel (base-hw), which is a landmark on the road to root our entire software stack in a foundation devoid of third-party code in sensitive components. Next, the new ability of seamlessly using the GNU debugger on top of Sculpt OS should find a ready welcome under developers addressing Genode as a runtime. The flexible assignment of USB devices to components and virtual machines is one of many usability advances, beside accessible suspend-resume support on PC hardware. Virtualization Help

I'm so close that I can taste it... I set up launchers for a couple of my existing VirtualBox VMs, including giving each its own vm_fs. I also converted my disk files from dynamic to fixed. The window opens up, but the contents stay black, and the following items are put in the log: [runtime -> vbox_labyrinth -> vbox] Error: ioctl operation=33 [runtime -> vbox_labyrinth -> vbox] Error: void ioctl(SUPCALLVMMR0&) called (/data/depot/genodelabs/src/vbox6/2024-04-11/src/virtualbox6/sup.cc:666), not implemented, eip=0x1a46715 My only guess is that something about the way I've configured the VM triggers this, but I haven't been able to dig deeper. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I then tried to use Seoul, but my ignorance got in the way of this one. Network Card Detection on x86_64

Hi I am currently evaluating the ping_nic_router application, along with similar networking programs, for establishing network connectivity on x86_64 hardware. My primary network interface card (NIC) is an R8169 model, which none of the existing programs are able to detect. However, upon integrating an Intel e1000 NIC, the connection was successfully established. Furthermore, the Sculpt operating system is able to interface correctly with both NICs and establish communication with the external network without any issues. Despite thorough comparison, I have been unable to identify any significant differences between the Sculpt operating system's networking functionality and the ping_nic_router application. I am uncertain whether I am overlooking a particular detail or if there is a requirement to modify the source code to accommodate the r8169 NIC. Thank you for your assistance. Best regards, Hamed

Hi there Genodians. I have thoroughly tested the sample programs provided for testing in the Gems section. Specifically, I have reviewed the "mixer_gui_qt_test" program as a practical example of Qt5. Afterwards, I decided to add a webview to this program for further practice. To achieve this, I needed to use webengine. I manually added the lib.so files to the build directory and also included the resource.tar files in this directory. To extract these files, I used the following command: <config> <vfs> <dir name="dev"> <log/> <inline name="rtc">2018-01-01 00:01</inline> </dir> <dir name="pipe"> <pipe/> </dir> <tar name="qt5_dejavusans.tar"/> <tar name="qt5_libqgenode.tar"/> <tar name="qt5_webengine_qml.tar"/> <tar name="qt5_webengine_resources.tar"/> <tar name="qt5_webengine_translations.tar"/> </vfs> <libc stdout="/dev/log" stderr="/dev/log" pipe="/pipe" rtc="/dev/rtc"/> </config> However, after building the program and executing it, I encountered the following error when using the QWebEngineView class functions: [init -> webview_test] Error: no plugin found for read(-1) Your assistance in resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated. It is good to be back. I'm experimenting with building and running Sculpt OS, but I cannot get networking to function when running it on my Linux machine. I would love some help!

Hi there Genodians. It has been many years since I've built and experimented with Genode, and now seems like a perfect time to get back into the picture. Right now, I want to prototype and experiment with running Sculpt OS directly on my current Debian 12 installation, in an Ubuntu 22.04 LTS podman/distrobox container. I'm using the current master branch of Genode from GitHub. It took me a bit of time to reread the documentation and a handful of very helpful Genodians.org articles, and I was able to build and run the sculpt_test run script after some configuration and switching my Linux environment from Wayland to Xorg (fb_sdl fails to initialize on Wayland). It all works perfectly with the exception of networking! I'm very happy with this progress and it was more than I expected to accomplish with my first revisit of Genode. I am building and running Sculpt OS using the following command in my Ubuntu container: "make -C build/x86_64 run/sculpt_test KERNEL=linux BOARD=linux LOG=core" When I click the Network button at the top-right of the leitzentrale, it only displays two buttons - "Off" and "Disconnected". Clicking on Disconnected initializes nic_router, but I still have no internet access. Feel free to throw me any ideas or troubleshooting tips. I'm having a lot of fun but having working internet will be amazing. Joel

Sculpt OS stuck on boot logo - 13th Gen Intel Core i7-13700HX - HP ZBook Fury 16 G10

Hello, I'm using a HP ZBook Fury 16 G10 Mobile Workstation PC with 13th Gen Intel Core i7-13700HX, however Sculpt OS won't boot on it. It gets stuck at the boot logo screen. I can boot it using the same USB on my Sony Vaio Intel Laptop - Intel Core i7 Q 740. Therefore the USB image is valid. I'm not sure what else to try as I have followed the guide for running Sculpt OS on hardware and I changed all the Bios settings I could. The only one I can't find access to is the Data Execution Protection option in the bios, it doesn't seem to exist as an option to enable or disable in my bios. But the rest of the options I was able to enable such as virtualisation VTX, VTD, Disabling secure boot etc. I can UEFI boot Windows and several Linux distributions on the computer with and without TPM or Secure boot enabled. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Hello Genodians, During the Roadmap discussion, Alexander expressed some relief about switching from VirtualBox to Seoul for his main VM. I can't find much information about Seoul online, though. Is there any handy info about: 1. Advantages / disadvantages of Seoul vs. VirtualBox 2. What's involved in migrating from VirtualBox to Seoul? 3.
