netperf

Hello! I'm running netperf TCP_STREAM and TCP_MAERTS tests for lxip stack and i obtained extremely low result - 5x10^6 bits/s while the maximum throughput is 1000 mbit/s . I wonder what could be the reason for that. Anna

Hello, just FYI, I have set up a simple web page[1] to promote the wider microkernel community and its goals. So far, the page comes with a brief description of the microkernel concept and an incomplete list of microkernel projects with links to each project's web. The description is made out of the first two sentences I found in the "What is XYZ" section or elsewhere on the web of the respective project. I also took the freedom to use the respective project's logo (or what I believed was the project's logo) for promoting it. I hope you will find this small web a good idea. It was inspired by a similar (though a little bit more informative) site set up by the unikernel community [2]. The sources of the [1] web are hosted on Github [3], so feel free to submit issues or PR to make the site better. Please send me a PM if there are any issues pertaining your project's cartouche that cannot be dealt with using Github. Process migration and persistence

Hi Genode world, I'd like to be able to freeze a process (PD or even a vmm), make it persistent, and unfreeze at some later point in time. Does anyone have suggestions/pointers on how to do this? Daniel

Golang on Genode

Hi everyone, I'd like to be able to write servers and clients for Genode in Golang. I believe this is currently possible only through gccgo (as I see go is supported by Genode tool-chain) but I'd like to be able to use the native compiler and all of its standard library. I don't think this would be a hard task albeit a bit more involved. First I'd need to port and build an older Golang tool-chain (version 1.3 or 1.4, not sure which of the two is the latest possible) and then bootstrap a newer one. Does this sound about right? What my questions/concerns are: 1. Has there been any previous work done on this or in this direction? 2. Is there any reason why Golang wouldn't be a good choice as a language on top of Genode? Although this seems to me as a very intuitive combination perhaps there are concept/security issues I might have overlooked. 3. Is there any work work being done or work that has been planned already to be done on Genode which could influence the Golang port and it's standard library? I've gone through the Road Map and several things popped out to me which might have some influence like cross-kernel binary compatibility and work to be done on networking stack. 4. Would adding Golang programs into the mix be an issue for the build system? The Genode build system is such a powerful feature and I'd like to think it will be easy and quite natural to integrate it with Golang's build system too, but maybe I'm wrong. I'd be very grateful if I could hear your thoughts and pick your brains before I start. Any suggestions and comments are very welcome. Regards, Peter

Bare bones child process creation.

Hi, I'm trying to do bare bones process creation without using the Child or Process helper classes (I'm toying around with serialization ideas). I tried to construct something similar to http://genode.org/documentation/architecture/process but I can't seem to get it to work (error = exception base not specified on nova32). Does anyone have a small code sample in the vain of http://genode.org/documentation/architecture/process ? Daniel

Memory protection clarification.

Hi, If an application allocates memory from its parent (e.g., from init) - is this memory capability granted or mapped? Assuming a secure kernel and IOMMU, how secure is this memory from access by other processes or the root process? How is memory clean up after application exit/death? (Sorry for the newbie questions, I have some catching up to do). Daniel

Genode in distributed scenarios and ROM proxy implementation

Hi, as I'm beginning to use Genode in a distributed scenario, I had some thoughts about the use of proxy components in order to transmit particular session interfaces over an arbitrary communication medium. The general concept here is that a client component can connect to a server component running on a different Genode system by using a proxy component on each side. For starters, I implemented this for the ROM session. I call this implementation "remote ROM": The remote ROM server is instantiated on the server side and connects to a local ROM service. It relays the content of a particular ROM module the remote ROM client, which is instantiated on another Genode system. The remote ROM client receives the updated ROM content from the remote ROM server and provides a local ROM service. In order to generalise the implementation, I separated the network-specific part in a backend library so that the backend can be tailored for the particular communication medium, protocol and policy. I think this renders the implementation highly flexible. I added a backend implementation (nic_ip) as a proof of concept, which uses a Nic service to transmit network packets with a static IPv4 header. In my opinion, the remote ROM implementation is already the enabler for quite a lot of distributed scenarios as it allows full publisher-subscriber communication of arbitrary data without adding too much interdependencies between the systems.
