Proposal: Depot User Repository Website - Like Flathub

I think it would be great to have a website like https://flathub.org/ where we have individual pages for user submitted depot applications that you can then add extra metadata information to such as the Screenshots, description, source code links, programming languages used, licenses, statistics such as user downloads, user reviews, issues or comments, update/commit histories and notes, whether the user that owns/submits the application to the depot has been verified, i.e signed the Genode Contributors Agreement so that their submissions are tied to their identity, therefore you can choose to download it if you trust that user. Similar to the Flathub Flatpak permissions lists, it can also list what permissions it absolutely requires, i.e network access, and which are optional, i.e that you can use blackhole for. If you browse https://flathub.org/ you can see what I am suggesting. A similar website that allows Genode and Sculpt OS users to explore other user's depot's and application submissions. Currently, it is not very intuitive or easy to explore depots, or find extra information about them before deciding to install and use it or not. Having a user repository website would allow you to make more informed decisions and have more trust in what applications you are downloading. The user submitted applications can also be linked to the source code so that users that do not necessarily have trust, can gain it by auditing the source of the depot applications.

Goa - How to satisfy find_package()?

Hopefully a simple question- I am trying to port a CMake project (arcan <https://github.com/letoram/arcan/tree/master>) that uses Freetype and looks for it using find_package(Freetype REQUIRED QUIET). I've added 'freetype' to 'used_apis' but that did not seem to make it happy. Worth noting, I am doing this in a separate directory from my Genode git clone, I assume that is not a problem? This article <https://genodians.org/jschlatow/2024-01-11-lomiri-calculator-porting> seems to suggest that there is a way to add a CMake file that satisfies it. I found this file <https://github.com/Manabu-GT/sdl_core/blob/aed19cd68e02b11e27275c05e00cf242…> on github, but I don't understand what it's doing and it's not the same one referenced in the article. Additionally, the arcan cmake <https://github.com/letoram/arcan/blob/master/src/CMakeLists.txt> calls for find_package(Threads REQUIRED) and fails here too. I see that PThreads seem to be supported in the libc port, and foundations 8.13.1 gives a genode native way of starting threads. I assume the method for this is similar to the one for Freetype?

Howdy all, I mentionned before my SD card woes, which I suspected were the reason I couldn't do much WiFi-based testing of SculptOS on the P.P. Well yesterday I 'stumbled' on yet another SD card to test with (it must be at least the third one) and -- drumrolls -- now everything works 'nominally'. So let it be known to current and future testers, "if at first you don't succeed, keep trying out several SD cards until you find one that does work" (of note: it does not seem to be the pinephone hardware which is at fault, since even MS Win running Etcher or Rufus sometimes fails to "burn" an SD card, even though its "find bad blocks" feature does not reveal anything... it's starting to look to me as the situation in the bad old days of 3.5" floppy disks when you could expect several disks in a ten-disk box to be bad). Anyway, with this newfound no-name micro SD card/4GB that works (compared to the previously tested 16 and 32 GB that fail in various interesting ways), it's now possible for me to, boot SculptOS, expand the partition size (the UI now returns control in a couple seconds after the expand, yay), make it the "Default" partition, enable WiFi and type a password, and then update the system (used that feature to update from genodelabs/sculpt-pinephone-2024-04-26 to genodelabs/sculpt-pinephone-2024-05-02) and of course, try out various Preset's. Most Preset scenarios run, except for the more RAM hungry ones which get stuck on resource requests (from what I can make out after donning my reading glasses), like "Morph web browser" -- indeed as noted in the Genodians.org articles, so that was expected. I should have selected a pinephone variant with more RAM to truly be a "first class citizen".. oh well -- will keep checking future updates though, as they are bound to introduce new presets and features, both at the high-end and at the low-end of RAM consumption, and it litterally takes just a few seconds with the on-target updater to upgrade to a new SculptOS image once it's released (well done!). File vault performance

Hi, I was wondering if anyone else has had problems with file vault performance. I tested a Debian VM with and without the file vault and performance was noticeably impacted by its use. Additionally, heavy file vault I/O (copying lots of data or growing the vault) seems to tie up one of the CPUs completely, although the top tool shows that the nvme fs component is taking more of the CPU load than the file vault, which surprised me... but that may just be an artifact of the parent/child relationship. For some specific numbers: ~47% load for init -> runtime -> nvme-1.3.fs ~14% load for init -> runtime -> file_vault -> file_vault -> tresor ~8% load for init -> runtime -> nvme ~7% load for init -> runtime -> nvme-1.part All one one CPU, others were idle. This was while expanding file vault capacity from 30 to 64 GB. The process took over half an hour to complete (still running at time of this email). This is on a newer machine that supports AES-NI and which has no problem dealing with LUKS full disk encryption, so it surprised me to see these results.

depot_download troubles

Dear Genodians After updating to genode 24.04 we found an intermittent problem involving the depot_download runscript in very specific circumstances. The problem manifests itself by fetchurl getting stuck for more than 10 seconds downloading a signature file, then aborting with the message 'Error: Operation was aborted by an application callback (code=0)'. Next fetchurl sucessfully downloads the archive file but then signature verification fails because no signature was downloaded. Some debugging revealed that in the error case the DNS response is forwarded by the nic_router a few milliseconds after the request but is not read by the fetchurl application until immediately before the abortion message, e.g. more than 10 seconds later. Further debugging is difficult since this Heisebug disappears when more output slows down execution. For illustration I've added an excerpt from the log below. The problem occurs infrequently and only under very specific circumstances: * using kernel base-hw running on qemu * on our gitlab CI/CD runner inside docker * on two distinct physical servers at our hoster We have unsucessfully tried to reproduce the problem as follows: * on the same physical machines manually started inside and outside docker * on other multiple physical machines using an identical gitlab CI/CD runner setup The problem occurs with both lxip and lwip network stack. The problem seems to disappear when we run the network stack (lxip/lwip) inside the fetchurl process instead of a separate vfs. We think we hit a very peculiar corner case of signalling between the network stack running in a separate vfs and the libc socket plugin. We would greatly appriciate any insight of what might be amiss or any suggestion how we could proceed with debugging. Pull requests. Staging or Master branch?

Hello, I have made some pull requests. I have just updated some readme files to markdown format. As far as I understand pull requests are a request to introduce/upload my changes to the Genode repository. This is my first time ever using/learning git, so I am not very familiar with how it works. I see that there are two branches in the genode repository, Master and Staging. Staging seems to be the most active branch where new changes are being introduced before an official release? Is the master branch supposed to be a copy of the latest public release and is only updated every time a full public release is announced? Staging seems to be the active development branch. So I made my pull request to that branch. Although I am not sure which branch I am supposed to make pull requests to? The genode contributions page says to make pull requests to the master branch. > As a rule of thumb, every line of development should have a corresponding issue in the issue tracker. > This will be the place where we will discuss your ongoing work. If there is no issue for your topic, please create one. > Once there exists the issue with a short description about what your line of work is about, create a new topic branch based on the genodelabs/master branch.

Converted Genode, Goa and Genodians.org Github repositories README files to markdown

Nearly all big Github repositories use README.md markdown files as it allows the creation of more sophisticated and professional Github pages. I would appreciate any feedback on the changes. Help building genode tool_chain source code for goa application porting

Hello, I want to learn Genode and SculptOS so I am trying to learn how to port applications to Genode/SculptOS as a learning experience and to help contribute to the project. I have never packaged an application or ported one before, so this is a first time experience. I know that Genode is quite an advanced project and probably not for novices like myself, however I am very interested in the project and would like to contribute. I would guess the best way to learn how to port applications and make packages is by actually trying to just do it. I've been looking around the internet trying to find various guides from github and genodians.org to learn how to do this. So far I have come to the conclusion that I need to use Goa on a Linux system to build these ports. So I am using a virtual machine with Ubuntu to do so. However none of the Goa guides show how to actually install Goa, so that is what I have been struggling to find information on. I am now reading the Genode Foundations Book as it seems to have more information on compiling the genode applications and tools from source. I am using a virtual machine running Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and I have installed the necessary packages as stated in the book: "Recommended development environment Genode is regularly used and devel- oped on GNU/Linux. It is recommended to use the latest long-term support (LTS) version of Ubuntu. Make sure that your installation satisfies the following require- ments: • GNU Make version 3.81 (or newer) needed by the build system, • libsdl2-dev, libdrm-dev, and _libgbm-dev needed to run interactive system scenarios directly on Linux, • tclsh and expect needed by test-automation and work-flow tools, • xmllint for validating configurations, • qemu, xorriso, sgdisk, and e2tools needed for running system scenarios on non- Linux platforms via the Qemu emulator." Reading the Goa github readme, it says I need the genode tool_chain. To get the genode tool chain, I have cloned the genode github repository and I have the source tree with the genode/tool/tool_chain file I have run the following commands: "git clone https://github.com/genodelabs/genode.git" "cd <genode-dir> git checkout -b 24.05 24.05" "cd <genode-dir> ./tool/create_builddir x86_64" Reading the Genode Tool_Chain section on the genode website it says: "Compile from source For those of you who prefer compiling the tool chain from source, we provide a tool for downloading, building, and installing the Genode tool chain. You find the tool in Genode's source tree at tool/tool_chain. For usage instructions, just start the tool without arguments." I have run this command: "./genode/tool/tool_chain" Is this what is meant by start the tool without arguments? The following message comes up: "~$ ./genode/tool/tool_chain bash: line 1: gcc: command not found Need to have 'flex' installed. Need to have 'bison' installed. Need to have 'g++' installed. Need to have 'libncurses' installed. Need to have 'libncurses' installed. Need to have 'texinfo' installed. Need to have 'libexpat' installed. bash: line 1: gnatmake: command not found Need to have GNAT installed and the GNAT version must match the GCC version (found GCC ). Need to have 'libgmp' installed. genode/tool/tool_chain:170: *** Please install missing tools.. Stop." Do I have to also manually install each of these packages using sudo apt install gcc flex bison g++ .... etc I would have thought that a make file or something similar would manually install all the dependencies for me? I am just not sure if I am doing this correctly and want to know if I am doing something wrong. I previously installed each dependency/packages needed as stated in the error message until I had no errors left. Then it seemed to start compiling the genode tool_chain via GCC, however it continued compiling for several hours, so I thought maybe I was doing it the incorrect way, so I cancelled the compilation. I want to first ask if I am even doing this the correct way before I spend more time trying to compile something incorrectly. Thank you.

Native SVG icon rendering instead of rasterizing? Who is responsible for GUI design?

Hello, I am curious who, or what team, is responsible for the GUI design of Sculpt OS. Especially the Window Manager preset that comes with Sculpt by default. Which I am sure is the window manager that most users are using? I am willing to create icons for the Window Manager GUI if needed. I don't know what licenses are equivalent to the AGPLV3 when it comes to graphic design? But whatever license is closest, I can publish my icons under that for the project so that there is no interference with licensing. It would mean that we could have a single universal icon file that could be scaled and oriented/rotated without having to make several rasterized file copies of the same SVG icon for a particular resolution, scale and orientation/rotation. There are so many different screen formats and resolutions now from smart watches, phone screens to large high dpi desktop screens and TV's.
