Celebrating Genode's 7th Anniversary

Dear Genode community, it has been 7 years since we officially published the first version of the Genode OS Framework. Like every year, we want to celebrate our anniversary together with you! Every year of our company's history was special. But this year, Genode has finally reached the point where we started using it as our regular day-to-day OS. When we started our company, this was our dream. You can imagine our excitement about our dream having become true. missing pci_drv driver

Hello Genodians, I'm about to test your new tg3 driver on my system. However, I cannot get genode to compile. I've got the latest genodelabs/genode repos checked out. TrustZone: forcing instant switch from secure to normal world?

Hi Genode team & list, in my master's thesis I built a framework, which enables cross-world-communication between the normal and secure world. This was based on your tz_vmm demo. If this sounds familiar: I already posted a few questions on this list related to my thesis ;) My framework relied on periodic world switches triggered by Genode's scheduler (The normal world is running within a Genode thread, so the scheduler prevents both worlds from starving). Of course, simply waiting for world switches leads to high latencies and a low throughput. To speed things up, we already improved the communication from normal to secure world: The normal world instantly hands over control to the secure world utilizing the smc instruction, when a message is available. We extended the hypercall handler in the Vmm class to notify the receiver via a semaphore. Unfortunately, forcing a world switch from secure to normal world does not seem to be that easy: Genode's monitor mode implementation cannot handle entries from the secure world. Hence, usage of the smc instruction is not possible. So, my approach would be using software interrupts which sould be routed to the normal world. I played around with the svc (supervisor call) instruction, but I don't know how to route this to the secure world. Any hints? Thanks in advance David -- M.Sc. tg3 driver works.

Dear Genodians, Last weekend I compiled Foc_x86_64 and tested it with the onboard ethernet cards of my server box. It worked! It worked just as good as the Intel e1000 driver. (Meaning, after a short while, all throughput ceased. :-( But that is eiter Foc or Lightttpd) The good news: this makes Genode a viable platform for many server platform that use the Marvel chipset. Data Communication btw Normal and Secure World in IMX53_QSB

I’m currently developing a simple trustzone device driver running in Normal World to communicate with Genode in Secure World. I’m using IMX53 QSB, Genode 15.02 as Secure OS, and customized Linux as OS for Normal World. In Normal World, my simple device driver calls smc instruction inside module_init(). The instruction is invoked with the command structure (named by “struct smc_cmd”). The physical address of "struct smc_cmd" is passing to Genode via _vm->state()->r1. There exists two physical addresses inside “struct smc_cmd": one for request buffer and the other for response buffer where the response buffer is allocated by kzalloc(). For the address conversion, I used virt_to_phys(). In Secure World (Genode), I’m modifying the tz_vmm source code for this experiment. I’m succeed in reading the request buffer from Normal World by directly accessing the physical address of the request buffer : PINF("req_buf = %s (0x%x)", (char*)((struct smc_cmd*)cmd_addr)->req_buf_phys, ((struct smc_cmd*)cmd_addr)->req_buf_phys); Ridiculously and Unfortunately, I’m in trouble to write some characters in response buffer (whose address is the physical address of Normal World). However, when I read the address (converted from the physical address using phys_to_virt()) in my device driver, I can only see the empty string (initial status). My questions are : Do I need another approach to write the physical memory of Normal World in the side of Genode? Is there any simple example or any volunteer to share an example for this kind of operation? Is there any comment to implement this kind of example?

Running multiple L4Linux scenarios

Hi, Is the current Genode builds in the repository capable of running multiple L4Linux instances above Genode ? I noticed that running the ISO image generated from the builds opens a single L4Linux instance and it would be useful to have an entry point of sorts to reach into the Genode layer to manage the L4Linux instances that runs above it (like launching more instances or deleting instances). Genode as a mobile operating system

One possible target for Genode, aside from PCs and development boards, would be smartphones. The security measures tend to be "don't install this app if you don't want to give it these permissions." With Genode, this problem is easy to fix. Also, security exploits would be a lot harder. It seems to make sense to make a mobile operating system with Genode. We could use Cyanogenmod and/or Android code for app and hardware support. I have an old working android phone that I would be happy to use to test this, and will probably have another available within a few weeks. Note that there are no official Cyanogenmod ports for either device, but there might be an unofficial port for one of them.

SD card driver in ODROID-X2 (exynos4412)

Hi community, my team and I are working on the implementation of a driver for SD cards in the ODROID-X2 (exynos4412). This driver we want to incorporate into the framework GenodeOS, but we have some doubts in implementation. Below I list a few: 1- We are implementing the controller DWMMC. This is the right controller to handle the SD card in the exynos4412? The SDHCI controller is most appropriate? 2- What exynos4412 SoC base address should be used for handling the SD card? 3- What is the IRQ associated with handling SD tajetas with DWMMC controller? 4- To use the DWMMC controller you need to configure GPIO ports? 5- What clocks should be initialized to handle SD cards? Anybody know any document that describes the initialization process of an SD card? We have been reviewing the implementation of the driver for the SD card in the U-Boot and Linux kernel, but have not resolved the questions above. Thank you for your help !!

running VirtualBox on Genode

Hi all, I've seen the Genode website, and I noticed that it is possible to run VirtualBox on Genode. I'm currently running Genode on a NOVA hypervisor. What should I do to get VirtualBox running on Genode? Thank you!

lsusb applet not found

Hi, When I run the 'lsusb' command, it tells me 'lsusb: applet not found' message. How do I solve this ? When I plugin a USB flash drive into the system, I get a weird message. It must be plugged in for the first time into the USB port and after that subsequent USB drives will not spawn the message again. [ 14.935514] Clocksource tsc unstable (delta = 200916449 ns) [ 14.826599] Switching to clocksource l4kipclk I am missing something in the L4Linux/Fiasco.OC build image I made to enable USB support ? Are the clocksource and lsusb messages correlated ?
