Porting LibVMI

Hi, I'm currently working with the TrustZone VMM example from Genode based on Genode 16.08 on i.MX53 QSB. So far I've been able to create a shared buffer which can be used for cross-world communication. My next step would be to try and port LibVMI[1] and attempt to run it in the Trustzone. Planning of Hack'n'Hike 2018 gathering

Hey guys, Like in the past years, the Hack'n'Hike 2017 was a big success to us. We had a great hike through the Zittauer mountain landscape, enjoyed the view from atop of several extraordinary rock formations, and visited the beautiful monastery ruin in Oybin. >From the hacking perspective, probably the most significant project was the Quake 3 scenario of @cnuke and @ssumpf. They achieved to let us play Quake 3 on Genode in LAN multiplayer in the end. With fluent 70-120 FPS using the Intel GPU driver and low-latency sound. That was a great experience and a lot of fun. Furthermore, there were projects working on a Freeciv port, Raspberry Pi 3 support, native i.MX USB support, tooling for the new depot/package system, Virtualbox 5 support in Muen, and more ... . That said, we'd like to invite you to continue hacking and hiking with us in 2018 ;-) This github issue [1] is meant as base for organizing, joining in, and getting informed. So, please feel free to post there if you have questions or suggestions regarding the Hack'n'Hike and, if you're interested, keep an eye on the issue as we will post all news in there. lighttpd.run

Hello! I've successfully compiled lighttpd.run on both seL4 and NOVA and set a static ip in the <libc> node as described in an earlier mailing list post. The lighttpd server runs perfectly under qemu! But when I burn the iso to a usb and attempt to boot from virtualbox and a variety of different hardware devices, it gets stuck at the original "Genode on sel4".....boot_ and I'm just left with a blinking cursor after boot. Am I missing something?

XML editing for dynamic subsystems

Hello list, To continue last month's interactive GUI thread, I have a proposal for the interplay between GUIs and the subsystem manager. I too would like a new way of launching and managing subsystems, but I prefer not dedicate any on-screen area for persistent menus. I would also live without any buttons if I could. I did some prototyping and found that I gravitate towards short-lived terminal components for user interaction as opposed to long-lived components such as cli_monitor or launcher. Rather than rework what I had into something that can appear and disappear in its lifetime, I figured that XML editing via Report sessions can support ephemeral menus and would require no modification of existing components. I have a simple proof of concept that opens a file for writing and responds to Report requests to add or remove XML nodes from the file's top-level element. This combined with fs_rom is enought to dynamically add and remove subsystems from init. Its too rough to publish now but it never need be a complictated implementation. I mentioned this to Christian Helmuth off-list and he suggested that it would be a transactional editor, which makes perfect sense. The tree can contain inline edit annotations or the XML could be stored as different revision files with a symlink pointer to the current version. This would allow for configuration replay without a lot of overhead or specialized tooling. Does this seem like a reasonable style of init mangagment that we can all get along with, I missing something? cheers, Emery

Nova demo with GUI

In the release notes of Genode version 14.02 there is a screenshot of a GUI environment that has two VirtualBox windows, one running TinyCore, one running Windows 7 (https://genode.org/documentation/release-notes/14.02). How do I reproduce this example? When I run the make run/virtualbox demo there is no GUI (until I get into one guest OS GUI, TinyCore), there is only a text-based boot environment then the hand-off to VirtualBox in that text environment. I need to be able to successfully boot up into that GUI environment and demonstrate two distinct VM's are running. Hello Stefan, Thank you for the quick response. Yes, I've been following the parallel thread and I've made the necessary changes in the "/repos/base/include/spec/imx6/drivers/board_base.h" file. I've fixed it by drawing insights from how Android is currently being flashed onto the device. I've followed a similar procedure. VirtualBox subsystem on reconfigurable init

Dear Genode community, I’m rewriting a scenario that uses a compound virtualbox subsystem that can be dynamically spawned and killed using the new ‘reconfigurable’ init for which we previously used the cli_monitor. The subsystem produces the expected log output for a few seconds, shows the “Press F12 to select boot device” virtualBox message, but ultimately hangs soon after a log message like: “fb resize : [0] 1920x1080 -> 720x400”. Also, the pointer no longer responds, and the intermediate init no longer generates reports. Other parts of the compound system remain functional. I can reproduce this behaviour on the recent vbox{4,5}_win{7,10}_{32,64} scenarios in ports/run at genode/master (f6386c6) with the patch below. I tried vbox4 / vbox5, Linux 32 bit guest, Windows 10 64 bit guest. Probably, I’m missing something trivial like a label prefix, but I fail to see what. Do you have any thoughts? PS: regarding the patch, please note 1) our test system uses partition 1 (not 4) and 2) I increased the readability of the run script by copy-pasting a part of the generated config back in the run script before I added the extra init component.
