VirtualBox Questions

Hello Everyone, Moving my main VistualBox VM to Sculpt has been mostly successful (and very encouraging), but I have two main problems that are keeping me from switching to it as the daily driver. Hopefully these are easy questions... 1. How do you specify the window size of the VM? 2. I need to use "Bridged Networking" for access to certain things on my LAN, but it looks like the VM is using NAT. I have tried poking around in the vbox6 file, but I don't know if there is more to it than that. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks! -- John J. Karcher devuser(a)alternateapproach.com

restarting child components with resource saturation

Hello Genodians We have a somewhat complex scenario consisting of a hand full of components and (sub-)inits. The outermost deploy-config starts, besides others, the following components: - vfs - report_rom and other helper components - init (drivers runtime) - init (management runtime) - init (dynamic runtime, ram/cap saturation) The runtimes are configured via a deploy-config. Most components and runtimes depend on the file system provided by vfs. When restarting vfs by incrementing the version attribute, some components that depend on vfs don't get any resources any more after being restarted. In the state reports of init I see that the RAM quota for some subsystems decreases after the restart of vfs. For some it increases for a short time but goes back down again. For most, including dynamic runtime, it stays constant for the whole time. I wasn't able to create a simpler example that shows the same error. Does anybody have an idea in which direction I could investigate? Best regards, Pirmin

One Small Step For Genode...

... one giant leap for a Genode enthusiast! ( OK, I exaggerated - it's not really a step for Genode at all, but it is a huge leap for me! ;^) ) After being extremely short of time for about a year, I finally used the 22.04 release to take my first steps toward using Genode as my daily driver OS, mainly by using VirtualBox 6 to run my existing VMs under Sculpt. I still have some problems to work out before I can make the official transition, and I will probably have a fair number of "new user" questions here soon, but I am highly impressed with the state of the system. In the beginning, I will probably continue to do most tasks within the Linux VMs, but I am really looking forward to gradually shifting applications to running directly on Genode as they (or native alternatives) become available. If any daily users have tips to share, I'll certainly be listening! (If I come up with anything helpful, I will try to write it up for Genodians also.) One thing I am very curious about is the state of the various packages in the depots - some of those look very intriguing! x86 Sculpt Experience

I tried 22-04 img on Intel i5. Considering the problems I've faced with Qubes, etc. in past, for such a 1st img , please accept my standing ovation and claps for the whole team. GUI loading and stability was awesome. 10/10 for 1st image. I have some feedback. 1. Mouse using my trackpad was very difficult to manage, it wasn't stable. 2. There's no shutdown button, poweroff button and no instructions in documentation on how to do so. I had to use hardware based shutdown which definitely harms my hardware. I wasn't able to use ramfs depot to download genodelabs tools. I'd try it after a shutdown button is introduced as hardware shutdown messes my hardware. Thanking you Sagar Acharya

Unable to run prepare_port for "libc" target

Hello, I'm trying to run Genode for the first time and I've noticed that the prepare_port script seems to fail for the "libc" target on the current master branch. I'm getting: libc extract src.txz (libc) xz: (stdin): File format not recognized tar: Child returned status 1 tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now Hard to see what the actual issue here is, I have xz version 5.2.5 installed if that helps. Building a computer to run sculpt

Hello Genodians I would like to build a computer to run sculpt on. I have some parts that at the moment only collect dust. I would like to build a computer to run sculpt on from these and some that I will buy new (CPU / Mainboard). From the unofficial Genode HCL (http://usr.sysret.de/jws/genode/hcl.html) I would guess a 10th generation Intel with integrated graphics would be a good a save starting ground. As the mainboard I would use a ASUS MB PRO Q570M-C which is 11th generation ready. The reason for this MB is that the Q570 chipset supports AMT which would allow me to debug problems via Ethernet. Do you think that a system built with these components would run sculpt well or are there some pitfalls that I have overlooked? Best regards, Pirmin

Design Question about implementing RPC on top of IPC

Hi Genode, I am building userspace on seL4 directly and have run into a design issue. I am implementing server and client using badged endpoints. I think Genode would have run into the same issue, and I would like to understand better how Genode solves it. It is not directly a Genode question, but I would benefit from your experience. Below I have laid out the scenario, the issue, and some questions. *Scenario* I have a userspace server that implements the functionality for an object(say type obj_T1). The server hands out badged-endpoints to clients to interact with this object. The badge is the virtual address of the object's struct in the server’s virtual address space. A client can interact with the object by sending messages on this badged endpoint. The client never learns the badge value. The kernel extracts the badged value when the server receives a message on this endpoint. By using the badge value, the server knows which object the client is trying to manipulate. The same PD, which implements the 1st server, also implements another server(in a separate thread, but same address space) for another object type (say type obj_T2). The server follows the same paradigm of handing out badged endpoints and using the badges values to keep track of the object. *Issue* I have a scenario where the client wants to invoke the functionality of obj_T1. This functionality needs access to obj_T2 as well. The client has badged EP caps to both objects. The client can invoke the badged EP handed out by server-1 for obj_T1 and give the badged EP of obj_T2 as an extraCap in the IPC message(or vice versa). Since the server has no way to look up the badge of the second cap, it cannot look up the underlying object for obj_T2. So my questions are: 1. Is there a way for a PD to look up the badge value of badged EP? I think the answer is no, but I thought I would still ask. 2. Is my idea of using the badge to keep track of the underlying object on the right track? Is there a better way of going about doing it? 3. As a potential solution, I can extend my server to add a new function, say GETID, which returns the badge value of a given object(i.e., EP). Since I know that the server always badges the EP with the virtual address of the struct, it is a trivial call to implement. But I somehow feel like this is not a neat idea, not quite sure why. Sculpt OS 22.04 Release Candidate (RC)

Hello community, today we published a Release Candidate of the Sculpt operating system for x86-PC. During the last months we worked hard to apply our reimagined Linux-device-driver environment also to PC devices and updated drivers for USB, Wifi, and Intel graphics to a recent Linux kernel version. This opens the prospect to support new PC platforms (speak recent notebook devices) more easily in future releases. The upcoming version of Sculpt replaces multiple integral device drivers at once. For this reason, we concluded to pre-release an RC and invite all Sculpt users to test it in their current setups. Please feel to report back any regression, flaw, or oddity on this list or the issue tracker over the next couple of days, so we can address them before the final release.
