genode/sculpt natively on x86 unibody Mac mini

recently I read the message that it is possible to run on Mac mini (as I understand, old x86 mac mini) I had 2 spare mac mini and one of them could be used for such an experiments. Is it possible to run Scuplt of last version on x86 unibody mac mini? if yes - any build/setup instruction? Getting Sculpt up and running on a hard drive

I am starting to feel my way around in the dark with Sculpt OS. It's very different. I like different. But, it's a learning curve, for sure. I am running it on my t430 where I have an SSD and SSHD (hybrid drive - part ssd and part hdd). The SSD's in the main slot, the SSHD's in the DVD bay. I have it running on the SSHD, but I'm really not sure what's going on - shocker, right? Here are the steps I followed to get here. Tell me if I went off the correct path: Preparing and burning the image (after a few stumbles, seems to work): * installed Debian 11.6 "Bullseye" on the SSD * updated * installed the necessary packages for building Genode/Sculpt. * downloaded the toolchain and installed it * checked out 22.10 in the genode git repo, locally * configured build.conf * MAKE += -j8 * CCACHE := yes * RUN_OPT += --depot-auto-update * QEMU_RUN_OPT := --include power_on/qemu --include log/qemu --include image/iso * libports, ports, dde_linux, dde_rump, gems, pc, dde_bsd, and dde_ipxe repos * built the image - success * dd'ed it onto /dev/sdb (when sdb was the SSHD - sheesh) Booting and running Sculpt: * F12, select the SSHD * Storage->storage-achi-1->partition 3 (GENODE)- expand runs 3 passes (takes a couple of minutes): max 7452 ExtXXXX... max 157 RelXXXX... max 1 resizefs: Illegal doubly indirect block found Please run e2fsck -fy /dev/block to Fix Note: this happens with either of two 1TB drives I use. * run CHECK the first check fails, the second succeeds This error occurs a couple of times, but it's apparently not fatal: [runtime -> ahci-1.3 mke2fs] Error: no plugin found for socket() * run FORMAT (if I don't genode complains about space) this takes several minutes a couple more[runtime -> ahci-1.3 mke2fs] Error: no plugin found for socket() * select USE [runtime] child "depot" announces service "File system" [runtime -> prepare -> bash] Error: no plugin found for fnctl(X) where X is 3, 4, ..., 19 [runtime -> ahci-1.3.fs] Warning: attempt to handle the same signal context twice (nested) [runtime] child "prepare" exited with exit value 0 This doesn't appear to be fatal * connect to network (ethernet) [runtime -> nic_drv] snprintf not implemented not fatal * connect to depot + -> Depot -> Selection -> genodelabs fetches with no errors [runtime -> update] Warning: dynamic configured RAM exceeds available RAM not fatal * install themed wm, sticks blue backdrop, system clock pc, bsd audio drv, falkon * browse to youtube, click on a video, be amazed that it plays and that sound comes out of the speakers! Does this sound like the right steps or did I err in some way that just happened to work out? Now that things are "working," I'm afraid to shut down the system - which brings me to my next question - is there an FAQ that answers questions like: * How do I shutdown gracefully? * How do I increase the size of the fonts (that log has tiny print, thankfully vim is easier to read in inspect)? * Will I lose my component setup on reboot? I am plowing through the documentation, which is quite good, by the way, but it's a slow go. I'm also working my way through the genodians posts. I'm reminded of Borland's early "Sip through the Firehose" blog. Will

post metal install issue - invalid download url empty

I got Sculpt working on my T430 on metal. I'm able to boot to the gui and expand my storage, format it, use it, connect to ethernet, and add genode-labs depot. However, when I click on themed-wm, it just hangs. When I inspect the log, it says: [runtime -> update -> manager] Warning: fetchurl got stuck, respawning [runtime -> update -> manager] Error: invalid download URL for depot user:<empty/> Thoughts? Build issue

OK. I'm trying to build Sculpt. I'm a naive newb, so I appreciate your patience as I come up to speed. Below are the details of my exploration into this new world. I've made progress through trial and error, but I've hit the following show stopper (I can't riddle out how to get around it). OK. So... I'm trying to build Sculpt OS from source to create a USB image I can boot from with a few changes to the wifi driver, per Colin's suggestion. I've read the Getting Started and Sculpt Documents: https://genode.org/documentation/genode-foundations/22.05/getting_started/i… and https://genode.org/documentation/articles/sculpt-22-10 just the sections pertaining to building. I've also watched this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7g8hDQQt-VI It's all a little confusing for newbs, so I'm gonna ask y'all in the hopes that you can help clear things up... 1. What distro (exactly) do y'all use - it says Ubuntu LTS in the docs - so Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS is the current version - is that it? I have the luxury of picking whatever I like (thankfully, I'm a debian user, so Ubuntu/Mint/Debian are fine with me) 2. If I want to change out the wifi firmware and edit the config files, do I need to just tweak the files and build the bootable image or do I need to do the build Sculpt from source thing? Hi, I have been watching the genode project for quite a while now - seems like at least 10 years, if not more. I have tried it off and on, over the years, but until recently didn't really give it more than a quick run through. Now, I'm getting more interested. I've got a Thinkpad T430 and it seems to mostly work with Sculpt 22.10 running on a 32GB USB 3 drive. I have a few questions: 1. Is Wifi on the T430 supposed to work? I couldn't get it to do more than scanning. There are some teensy tiny error messages in the logs, so if it helps I could get out my magnifier and share them, but if there's a known issue, I figured y'all would know that without the specific error message. The wired connection works, so I'm ok with that as a fallback (but it makes it less mobile). 2. Persistence - what about persistence? I picked the ram-fs per the getting started document, but I would like to save SOME stuff- say bookmarks and source code, how do I do that? 3. I read that the genode folks use Sculpt as their daily drivers - so I'm guessing they don't boot from USB, build their environment up from scratch, add in firefox, terminal, whatever and so on, every day, just to start doing other productive things. Is there somewhere where typical workflows are described? Oh, and thanks for doing this - I like the modularity and exposed dependencies. Thanks, Will

fec_nic_drv runtime error in Genode 22.11

I upgraded genode-imx and genode to version 22.11 for my IMX project. base-linux: LD: exception during program load

Hello Genodians While Testing the `wasmedge` application that I'm porting with the Goa tool (goa run), I get the following errors: ``` Error: _map_local: lx_mmap failed(addr_in=0x0, addr_out=0xffffffffffffffed/-19) overmap=0 Error: LD: exception during program load: 'Genode::Region_map::Region_conflict' Error: Uncaughht exception of type 'Genode::Region_map::Region_conflict' Warning: abort called - thread: ep ``` I tried to follow the path that leads to this by adding some debug prints to the code in base-linux. If I'm not mistaken, the error happens, when in `load_phdr()` in the file `base/src/lib/ldso/include/file.h` a temporary dataspace is created. The binary compiled for x86_64 is 312K in size. Announcement: Sculpt OS 22.10 released

Hello everyone, I'm happy to announce today's release of the Genode-based Sculpt operating system version 22.10. https://genode.org/news/sculpt-os-release-22.10 At the surface, this version is a maintenance release with almost no visible changes. Under the hood, however, we poured immense efforts into the lowest-level parts of the driver infrastructure like the discovery and management of PCI resources and the hotplugging of USB devices. Those low-level architectural changes left almost no driver unturned. We thoroughly tested Sculpt on our team's arsenal of machines. Please let us know how it works on your's.
