Early memory allocation

Hi all, first of all thank you Christian for the quick bugfix concerning the dde/usb makefile. This time, I have a question related to the allocation of memory during system startup. At the moment, I'm just working with qemu/ l4ka-pistachio, and I've noticed that the initial memory allcation ("Trying to allocate 4K pages from sigma0") requests over 100MB, and this allocation takes about 3 seconds on my machine (without kqemu acceleration). In core/platform.cc I saw, that you ask sigma0 for the entire amount of memory it has concerning this page size and that you also memset the returned memory to zero. When playing around with that, I saw that omitting the zeroing does not seem to have any impact on the running system (I only have a dde driver running...). I also saw that I may - for a start - limit the memory allocation to a much smaller size. This involved a much better startup performance. So I wonder why the zeroing is needed, and I'd like to know if your memory management allowed for subsequent allocations from sigma0, so that I could save some startup time and allocate the remaining memory later. (Is this question - from your point of view - worth the investigation at all? Or is the delay only related to my slow qemu having no impact on an average hardware?) Genode/ l4ka-pistachio build error

Hi all, I've tried to build the genode framework for the l4ka-pistachio kernel using your 4.2.4 cross toolchain. B:Other questions- 1)Do you eventually intend to formally verify the software? (I believe the NICTA /OK-labs L4 kernel that genode can target is in the process of being verified and was wondering if you will likewise wish to verify genode to supply a fully mathematically verified framework for building OS personalities on). Lastly, I re-read the "Interfaces and Mechanisms" and I think I've found another minor error- in the section "Quota" in the sentence "Once, the server requests to close the session, the child is responsible to release all resources that were used for this session.". Aren't the words "server" and "child" meant to be swaped around here? Hello, I'm an amateur//hobbyist programmer who is very interested capability operating systems. I have just found this project and have started reading the documentation. I have some questions regarding the "Interfaces and Mechanisms" document- sorry if these have already been asked (if so just point me to where I can already find the answers). 1- Is there anyway that a child can be endowed with any extra capabilities to server services at creation by its parent? Or is it always the case that the child always has to be first created without any extra capabilities and only after it is created then can it gain external caps by requesting a service by way of its parent? 2- In the documentation it says that the parent of a server is given the root_capability to any services announced by the child and this cap is intended to be used and kept by the parent only. Is this cap actually copyable and transferrable? And does it really matter if the parent gives this cap away? This last question may seem really dumb since it goes against the whole point of having an acylic tree of parent to children nodes to facilitate reasoning about the TCB, however, if you haven't actually stopped the parent from been able to give it away shouldn't you assume that it will give it away? 3- The documentation mentions the use of unix file permissions. Are access control lists and file permissions to be planned/implemented in the file servers within the genode project? If they are, it is there a possibility for a confused deputies to arise since the clients request services by using serive_name and arg strings instead of capabilities? >From what I naively understand about capability based OSes is that you either have to provide a persistent state mechanism or an ACL like regime to be able to recreate the capability network at power-up after shut-down/crash-recovery. Is it possible for a system to be built using genode framework which is orthognally persistent and thus drop the use of ACL's? Lastly, I think there is a very slight mistake in the "Interfaces and Mechanisms" document in the "Servers" section towards the very end in the sentence "The session capability, created by Child1 (4), can now be passed to Child1 as return value of nested session calls (5, 6).": shouldn't the second mention of "Child1" actually be "Parent2"?) This looks like a very interesting project with fantasic potential! Thanks for creating it! We have made the version 9.05 of the Genode OS Framework available. After the previous release 9.02 had brought Genode to the Pistachio kernel, we have now further enhanced the number of usable base platforms by adding support for the OKL4 kernel developed by Open Kernel Labs. In addition to the improved platform support, the new version brings major functional improvements including the first parts of our USB stack, 64-bit support, and the integration of the Qt 4.5.1 application framework into our main-line source tree. Using Genode with Existing L4Ka::Pistachio Components?

Hi, out of interest, is it possible to easily use Genode alongside existing L4 components (e.g. L4Linux, Darbat or custom servers)? Or would I have to rewrite the components to fit into the Genode architecture? Also, I'm trying to figure out what the best way to solve a potential license conflict will be (other than don't use the new code/implement the feature at all, hopefully), given that Genode is released under the GPLv2, and some components I'm planning to keep separate in their own servers/libraries to build an accompanying Personality on top of Genode will be released under the Eclipse Public License by the Symbian Foundation soon. Cannot Link Genode 9.02 for L4Ka::Pistachio (With minimal customisation for i9)

Hi, I am currently working on a new L4Ka::Pistachio-based operating system project, and am contemplating integrating Genode components. Sadly, in the process of integrating Genode into the build system, I've noticed that the linking stage fails towards the end of building core with the following: /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -ll4 collect2: ld returned 1 exit status make[2]: *** [/home/tyson/i9os/Personalities/GenodeKit/build.pistachio_x86/core/x86/core] Error 1 make[1]: *** [single_target] Error 2 make: *** [.] Error 2 I had to copy the L4 header files into /base-pistachio/include/, despite also having them in a location specified in build.pistachio_x86/etc/pistachio.conf. Even after running "make install" to copy the L4 userland libraries and header files to /usr/local, I'm stumped. File System Support

Hi all, This is my first post to this list. Can some one please tell me whether there is any filesystem support available for Genode. In other words can I write on the hard disk or access it's ext2/ext3 partitions. If yes, then how to get it working. Refer me to some menu.lst file. And, do you use some different grub? Also I need some help on building genode properly to get 'everything' working. By the way is their support for USB Mouse/Keyboard. Regards, Ashish
