Guideline for commits and issues

Is there any guidline for the interplay of commits wich are intended to enrich 'genodelabs/genode' and issues at 'genodelabs'. I wonder if i should create issues for all commits i.e. and if my commit messages should always rely on an issue. greets, Martin

Building toolchain needs 'libncurses5-dev'

Roadmap 2012

Hello, as the end of the year is approaching, it's time to make up our minds about the focus of the project in 2012. There are numerous directions we may head to, for example, we could advance our ARM support to move towards the mobile space (tablets and smart phones), or put emphasis on multi-processor support and NUMA, new kernel platforms could be explored, or we could bring forward our ambitions to combine Genode with reconfigurable hardware. However, for me personally, the biggest leap would be to start using Genode as everyday platform for my personal computing needs. I am convinced that the framework has reached the maturity and the essential functionality to make this vision come true in 2012. Using our platform for productive work would provide us with the incentive to address real-world problems that matter for actual users - simply because we would be demanding users. Furthermore, there is no better way to show the conviction that we have in our technology than to use it ourself. Therefore, I propose "Eating our own dog food" as the grand theme of our project for the next year. To schedule our road map, we should first become aware of our actual computing needs and then sensibly prioritize those requirements. I'll start with a brief list of software functionalities that I need. Fundamental: * VIM * Shell (e.g., bash) * Tool chain (coreutils, gcc, binutils, make, findutils, tar, Tcl, expect) * Persistent file system * Block-device encryption * SSH client * Git client * GNUPG * Web browser (also used for email, don't need multi-media stuff) * PDF viewer * A way to run a just-compiled Genode sub system * Interactive python shell (to be used as a calculator) * Screen lock * A fall-back virtual machine running Linux for carrying out sporadic work with images (Gimp, Povray, ImageMagick, etc.) and LaTeX, and for testing the Linux version of Genode Of course, there are further things I desire that are not fundamentally important but would make the experience much more enjoyable. Add-ons: * Tiled window manager (similar to the wonderful ion3) * Intel wireless driver * Media player (at least for playing music) * Thinkpad ACPI support, fan daemon * Qemu * Tuxpaint This list is surprisingly short. With Noux already having reached the state where we can execute VIM natively, supporting the other command-line tools will, for the most part, be a matter of enhancing Noux (i.e., adding support for the fork syscall). In addition, I have the immediate goal to release a new live CD by February 2012. Ideally, the demo scenarios featured on the new live CD should give a glimpse on how Genode will be used a general- purpose OS. Do you agree with the proposal of the overall theme for 2012? But problem i'm facing here is while sending a string from client to server only the first character in the string is received remaining characters were scrambled.please kindly give some suggestion. Hello all, happy new year! I've been away from the computer for a while and am starting to get back into programming. I'm keen focus on a couple of small personal Genode projects I've wanted to do for a some time. I've a few questions and suggestions to help build the Genode community from the perspective of a hobby programmer like me: 1) could you supply a logo to display on web-pages for linking back to the Genode web-site. 2) As-far-as I can see there is there no place on the Genode site for listing 3rd party associated projects- do you plan in the future to offer something like this? 3) I would like to make a small donation to this project- could you provide a bitcoin address? (It does give one a nice warm fuzzy feeling knowing that you've helped a project that you use) 4) Is it planned for Genode support secure booting and attestation in the future? Secure boot + local object-cap OS + web lends itself to many interesting project possibilies: eg- p2p social networking where the user has true control over their own personal info, or a fast and efficient p2p digital currency, etc. (I believe that there are drivers for the intel TPM chips in Linux--maybe these could help?) thanks ross mcginnis

How to run Genode with L4Linux having only one RS232 port

Hello! I am trying Genode on some different ARM platforms such as: a) Nvidia Tegra 250 (Development Kit board) b) Beagle board (www.beagleboard.org) I have no problem to build and run Genode having FOC kernel support for these boards (working via UART terminal without graphics) But to run L4 Linux the Terminal session is needed, and that session can only be provided via user (not kernel) UART. But there is no possibility to use another UART, other than we have for kernel standard input/output (board b without extentions has only one RS232) So, is there any possibility to use only one terminal connection for kernel and l4linux simultaniously (the same console for input/output)? For example, a stub uart driver that redirects uart IO&interrupts to standard IO? 2) Have you intentions to add any of these ARM platform support in Genode (drivers for uart,display etc.)? The platforms above I think, are more avaliable than pbx-a9. All of the Best and Happy new Year, Evgeny.

Using libports

Hi, I am new to Genode, and still trying to understand how it works. But I've build several test using L4Ka::Pistachio base and of course Linux-based. I've found some very interesting ports while browsing $(GENODE_DIR)/libports, particularly the filesystem and block device related stuffs, because I don't know how to access the harddisk so far, unless using L4Linux with Fiasco.OC. Is there some example for using block_session for a simple client, maybe just to get partition info from a SATA disk? I need a starting point to use these stuffs :-) Thanks. Best regards, FX. J.
