Hello all, I would like to bring up the discussion of whether our project should apply for GSoC this year. Jakub Jermar (HelenOS) encouraged me to do so and I like this idea. The application of mentoring organizations is open until 9th of March: http://google-opensource.blogspot.com/2012/02/mentoring-organization-applic… I propose to select 5 working topics as potential GSoC projects, taking our "challenges" and "roadmap" as inspiration: http://genode.org/about/challenges http://genode.org/about/road-map Of course, we are open to further suggestions. If you have one, please go ahead and tell us! For each of the topics, we will need to provide a rationale about * Why do we think it is a good idea to pursue the work, * Where it fits into the scope of our project, and * Why we think it is feasible to achieve the goal during the summer. Furthermore, we should try to plan ahead working steps as far as we see them. For doing this, the GitHub issue tracker would be the ideal place. One particular topic that Jakub brought up is combining Genode with the HelenOS kernel (called SPARTAN). Personally, I think this would be a technically intriguing topic and also a good opportunity to cultivate the relationship between the HelenOS team and Genode. So what do you think? (easier to test :P)/_ But you guys missed somethings(also on Road-map) which are very essential & a necessity & need to be addressed Bluetooth support Still no modem manager & mobile-broadband info cannot connect to net with modem or cell phone cannot update packages or surf or report bugs Out of the box support is a must for modems everyone doesn't use broadband/wifi *please implement them please be kind :) * _*regards*_

How to run Bash on QEMU ARM

Hi, It seems that Bash in the latest release and Noux are only for x86, but I want to run them on QEMU ARM(pbxa9). So, I modified ports/mk/noux.mk, ports/run/noux.run and ports/run/noux_bash.run as below. ports/mk/noux.mk commented out #43: #REQUIRES += x86 ports/run/noux.run, noux_bash.run commented out first four lines which inquire if the target system is x86_32. Then, I've managed to run Bash, but wasn't able to execute any bash command successfully. I can see my keyboard inputs on the bash console, but the enter key doesn't work. It just shows an error, "unsupported ioctl (request=0x802c7415 " Could you tell me what's wrong? Also, where to put my own program to execute through the bash? Plus, what's required to run bash_vim on QEMU ARM? Thanks. The problem with the Signal service implementation.

Hi, All. We were investigating problem of sending big amount of data via network in Genode on Fiasco.OC. And we have found out some significant bug of the Genode Signal service implementation and we also could provide the simple stable solution. As know Packet_stream_rx and Packet_stream_tx implementations (os/include/packet_stream_*) are based on a Signal service (signal.lib) and use RPC submit(Signal_context_capability context) of Genode::Signal_session (base/include/signla_session/signal_session.h). And this submit RPC is invoked all the time while RX – TX packet transferring (as the packet acknowledge). So the problem is that the submit is RPC and according to RPC implementation all parameters, which are capabilities, are passed by special way know as capability marshalling/unmarshalling (base-foc/include/base/ipc.h). And while capability unmarshalling the new l4_cap_sel is allocated and capabilities are mapped once again all the time. In the limit all capability table of the l4 task will be filled completely; especially while intensive packet transferring. And it damages the Genode Core foremost and provides other troubles. As we investigated the decision of using the capability in a sense of signal context is redundant. Signal_session_component::submit uses Siganl_context_capability only for searching it in the context entrypoint (base/src/core/signal_session_component.cc). But the same effect could be achieved by searching signal context by a badge(local_name()) and then there would not be necessity of capability unmarshalling. The decision is quote simple to change the Signal_context_capability typedef from Capability<Signal_context> to simple int or long type (base/include/signla_session/signal_session.h) and then to fix all errors generated by compiler. So we think that this problem of Signal service is significant and has to be fixed as quick as possible. But of course we'll glad to hear any your remarks about the decision to use the capability is a sense of Signal_context. Best, Ivan Bludov.

Announcement: Genode OS Framework version 12.02 released

I am happy to announce the version 12.02 of the Genode OS Framework. This release is something special because it represents the first version conducted with our new open development process. The framework's additions and improvements were primarily motivated by our road map for 2012. For example, the release comes with the first bits of our device-driver manager dubbed d3m, it enables the interactive execution of a Bash shell to spawn coreutils, and it features the port of a PDF rendering engine. With regard to the base API, the most noteworthy additions are a new framework API for accessing memory-mapped I/O registers more safely and API support for reusing services as sandboxed libraries. How to enable GDB for l4linux

Hi, I'd like to use gdb_monitor to monitor l4linux and processes running on the l4linux. Could you tell me how to write scripts for that? I am running Genode l4linux on Fiasco.oc on qemu (pbxa9). Anyway, I don't want to keep the information from you right now. In short: there exist many different run scripts. Each describes a particular boot scenario. Just have a quick look: find <genode-dir> -maxdepth 3 -name "*.run" You can specify each of those run-script names to 'make run/...' in your build directory. For example, to build and run, let's say vim, change to your OKL4 build directory and issue the following command: make run/noux_vim Not all run scripts work across all platforms. In the case of doubt, just risk a look inside the respective run script. I just noticed that there doesn't exist a ready-to-use run script for Arora. Maybe we should create one? The 'qt4.run' script could serve as a nice starting point. For the networking part, the 'lwip.run' script may be useful to look at. -- Alexandre Bique

How can I use fopen() and write a file to disk? When I run the function below: void file_pass() { printf("File pass\n"); char buffer[] = {'s', 'a', 'm'}; FILE* f = fopen("temp","w"); fwrite(buffer, 1, 3, f); fclose(f); } I get the error: no plugin found for open("temp", int) Can anyone offer some advice? I am using L4Pistachio as my base.

boostrap genode from fiasco

Hi When I try to load "core" I get this: Loading sigma0 Loading genode/core To be loaded binary region is out of memory region. Binary region: 140000 - 180c08 The binary itself is not big. Is there anything in core I can check? Best regards Michael Grunditz
