Hi all, I have two query to understand Genode basics. I am not able to understand the explanation given for Bitfield at line #140 in repos/base/include/util/register.h " Bitfields are read and written according to their range, so if we have a 'Bitfield<2,3>' and write '0b11101' to it only '0b101' (shiftet by 2 bits) is written." can any body explain me what it means for ? Stefan and Martin, I was trying to understand implemented TZASC driver in Genode for vea9x4 board. can you suggest me some sources which have information used in repos/os/src/server/tz_vmm/vea9x4/tsc_380.h Regards Franc

Hello everyone, I don't have suggestions for devs, but I would like to share my goals for 2015 and solicit some suggestions on how to prioritize my own work. This summer I started converting the Make build system to a Nix build system, which seemed dubious at times to even me, but I have reached a point where I think things will get exciting. I would like to emphasize that this isn't a criticism of the current system, I just find the properties of Nix very interesting and this is an effort to fold the Genode into the way I have been composing my legacy OS. I have not been modifying any Genode code, and I have no intentions of writing new components without Make rules. I have a few directions that I could and would like to go with this, and I'd like to know which path of investigation sounds most interesting to any of you. * Formally benchmark Nix performance against Make. * Generate binary packages using existing Nix continuous integration tools and Make rules for fetching them. * Adapt the Nix packages collection to build its existing packages for Noux. This similar to how packages may be built for Darwin or BSD, Â Â I would abort converting Make rules for anything not required for bootstrapping a Noux toolchain. * Work towards running virtualizing instances of NixOS, building the Genode host and the NixOS guest concurrently. I have had success related to virtualizing, I have managed to integrate my build expressions with the NixOS system expression on my host machine, installing a NOVA scenario to my boot partition and GRUB menu. One could obviously do this with a set of scripts calling make, but in this way the Genode components are treated as system dependencies just as my linux host would treat its system services. I think the next logical step in this line of thought would be to build my Linux host system as an image optimized for Seoul, but I am traveling at the moment and virtualizing Seoul scenarios has been slow going with only a single laptop. AHCI/part_blk

I originally thought that the AHCI driver wasn't working, but my issue may be with the part_blk driver. The part_blk driver never starts, but AHCI announces service "Block". Any help?

Genode and GRUB2 on real PC hardware

Hi all, yesterday seemed like a good day to give Genode another go, but this time for real, meaning not on QEMU but real hardware. Since the former try worked out-of-the-box last time, my assumption was that the same should apply to the latter. Alas, I failed horribly. Here's what I did (assume CROSS_DEV_PREFIX is appropriately set): make -C ⟨genode-dir⟩/repos/base-foc prepare make -C ⟨genode-dir⟩/repos/libports prepare PKG=x86emu ⟨genode-dir⟩/tool/create_builddir foc_x86_64 BUILD_DIR=⟨demo-build-dir⟩ uncommented REPOSITORIES += $(GENODE_DIR)/repos/libports in ⟨demo-build-dir⟩/etc/build.conf make -C ⟨demo-build-dir⟩ kernel make -C ⟨demo-build-dir⟩ run/demo Since I have no QEMU around and no immediate plans to install it, the latter will fail, of course. Then mkdir /boot/genode && cd /boot/genode cp ⟨demo-build-dir⟩/var/run/demo/genode/* . cp ⟨demo-build-dir⟩/var/run/demo/fiasco/* . cp ⟨demo-build-dir⟩/var/run/demo/boot/bender . where /boot is my grub's boot directory. Being on a vanilla Debian, the /boot/grub/grub.cfg can be extended by providing a /boot/grub/custom.cfg, which I derived from ⟨demo-build-dir⟩/var/run/demo/boot/grub/menu.lst Please see the attachment for its contents. Now, when booting, the actual module loading process seems to succeed (at least GRUB did not complain), but core ended up spouting ROM module "init" not present while attempting to construct object rom of type Rom_connection at ⟨genode-dir⟩/repos/base/src/core/main.cc:259. To me this implies that init isn't actually loaded. Anyone seen this before? Everything else being okay, I suspect there's something wrong with GRUB. Oh, and what's this ⟨demo-build-dir⟩/var/run/demo/boot/bender doing? It's a 32 bit executable even though anything else is 64 bit. Why is that? Cheers, Christian

Rpc argument for a binary array?

Hi, Is there a mechanism for passing an array of 8_bit register values in RPC calls when using base-hw? I see the Rpc_in_buffer class but that's designed for string arrays not arbitrary binary value arrays. The use case is for implementing an I2C server which has multiple clients each of which implements a specific device on the I2C bus. I2C supports any length of data transfer but practically I don't see more than a dozen bytes being transferred in one contiguous block. I'm using 14.11. Adding Zynq platform support to base-hw

Hey, I just started adding support for the Zynq SoC to base-hw (see [1]). As I don't have any Zynq hardware available yet, I tried running this on QEMU 2.1.2; I compiled the run/hw_info target. After applying some printf debugging ;), I figured out that the program dies (i.e. QEMU freezes) during kernel initialisation in init_virt_kernel(). I therefore tried attaching gdb to QEMU's internal gdb server, however, it seems to ignore my breakpoints. Hence my question: Do you guys have any experience with low-level/kernel debugging on QEMU?
