Running demo on Virtualbox

Hi all, I'm trying to get the genode demo to run on Virtualbox, from a windows server 2012 box. I've been to the (awesome) Sunday talk at FOSDEM and the prospect of getting genode running on my personal laptop is really exciting, but I'd like to try it on a VM first. I realise genode is "focused on extending the community of users" on 2016, which is great news for me. I've managed to make run/demo, but it halts after a few "Quota exceeded!", and can't even run the config module. Issue in ACPI parsing code

I've found a problem in acpi.cc that caused not parsing acpi tables properly on my pc. The problem is that there is an incomplete check for usability of xsdt table. According to some documentation on the net value 0 in revision entry in rsdp means that this is acpi 1.0 and xsdt table is not available but this was not checked. Attached patch fixed this issue for me. -- Tomasz Gajewski

WOW... could Genode use Wayland Over Wire?

Hi Genodians- I just took note that Wayland is on its way to inter-operating over the network <http://blogs.s-osg.org/wow-wayland-over-wire/>.. Norman and the other Genode system architects, may request some adjustments to what/How WOW will become...but it sure seems like the time to see if Genode might be able to utilize WOW for it's remote, graphics display.. Then if would be great if Genode's graphical config tool, were arcitected such that the GUI interaction code is partitioned from theGenode configuration business logic, such that one can also travel much lighter when configuring light-weight embedded systems perhaps using TMUX for terminal interaction <https://tmux.github.io/>.. I'm not sure what the final analysis will be on how Genode's existing GUI server will in the end relate to how things are apt to be done in Wayland's WOW api.. .. it would be great to hear more thinking here as to how Genode might best evolve.. all the best -Peter

why use ambient authority in genode hello world?

Problem with custom rm-service

Hi Genode mailing list, the last few days I wrote a server component (called proxy_server) which offers a custom RM-service called "PRM" (Proxy_RM). Under the hood the component maintains a Rm_connection within each Prm_session_component in order to use the original core rm_service. My aim is to intercept all attach and detach operations. AHCI driver problem

Hello list! Description: AHCI driver do not announce service "Block" Environment: Genode: 15.11 MB: ASUS Sabertooth Z87 Driver successfully finds my HD, creates appropriate ATA_driver, and that's all. With verbose messages turning on all went ok but it's impossible to work normally in that mode. Thanks.

Running Ubuntu Snappy under Genode on a SnickerDoodle..?

It's encouraging to find that Genode already provides some support for the Zynq_7000 ARM/FPGA SOC.. I gather SnickerDoodle <http://krtkl.com/> (I will be Alpha testing), supports Ubuntu Snappy booted from an SD card out of the box <https://www.crowdsupply.com/krtkl/snickerdoodle/updates/1992>... My dream here is that Ubuntu Snappy might run under Genode, along side the more real-time oriented I/O and control process.. (that I would not trust to run within Snappy).... that is:I would like the benefits of both Genode, and a mainstream IOT orientated Linux distribution (that someday I hope will become BSD centric ) thus, I write asking for advice as to how I might best get all of these OS parts to play nicely together...and if anyone else has a similar interest for Genode's future directions. -Peter

RE: FUSE + VFS

Hello, Thank you for the response. In the implementation described in the article VFS isn't used due to the fact, that VFS wasn't available in genode at that time. A comment of the libc_fuse plugin states: /* * During the initialization of the plugin, we already require the VFS. * Hence, we need to make sure to initialize the VFS before doing our * own initialization. */ So does the current implementation, when using a FUSE fs via the libc plugin, require VFS? Is there any more detailed information about the VFS in genode? I am particularly interested in finding out how the flow of a FUSE call differs in genode compared to the "normal" call as shown in this graphic [1]. When using a FUSE based fs as a file system server as described in Josef's response, do any adjustments have to be made to the FUSE fs so it runs on genode? Green task stacks

Hello! Genode Thread class already have infrastructure for implementing the green tasks: alloc_secondary_stack() which used i.e. in dde_linux to emulate the Linux kernel behavior. These secondary stacks have fixed maximal size and live one below another, so they can overlap each other. It is possible to create different Dataspace lists for each green stack and then switch them. Right now Genode hasn't the method for switching several DSs at once, so each DS in that list should be switched individually which would be too expensive. The question is: even having that method, can we still consider our tasks "green"? Or such complexity is no better than the ordinal thread complexity? Thanks!
