Mouse pointer speed

Hi In all the examples that come with Genode, the mouse pointer moves at what seems like an erratic speed. Is this a driver issue or something else? -- Kind regards Bent Bracke

tz_vmm run script

Hi all, I am running tz_vmm run script on i.mx53qsb. I have LVDS display kit attached to the board. I want the Linux (non secure world) to be displayed on the LVDS while the Genode uses the serial console. I wonder if you could tell me how can i do this. Thanks!

build instructions from release notes for toolchain riscv fail (in my case)

Hi Everyone, While playing around with the new riscv support, I followed the instructions in the release notes in order to build a riscv toolchain from scratch. (See section 'Steps to test Genode on RISC-V', url http://genode.org/documentation/release-notes/16.02). Step 2 involves Building Genode and a test scenario. After cloning https://github.com/ssumpf/genode.git I ran: $ ./tool/tool_chain riscv This fails immediately, and it seems the riscv argument is not supported in this version. The following error is given: make: *** No rule to make target `riscv'. Stop. When I try the same thing with the repository from the Genodelabs github (https://github.com/genodelabs/genode.git) this argument is supported and a build starts. Same goes for the next step: $ ./tool/create_builddir hw_risc This only succeeds with the repository from genodelabs. Otherwise it gives the error: make: *** No rule to make target `<removed full path>/tool/builddir/etc/build.conf.hw_risc', needed by `<removed> full path/build/hw_risc/etc/build.conf'. Stop. To me it seems some url's might have been mixed up while writing the release notes. Or after writing the releasenotes were published the repositories have somehow been modified. In any case, if you run into the same issues, you might want to clone https://github.com/genodelabs/genode.git instead of the git repo given in the release notes. Regards, Menno

Escape stack overflow in noux_bash

Hey, This seems to be a escape stack overflow, which crashes the kernel. All that a user has to run cat tmp/bblub, which I believe is a link to /ram/tmp/bblub to cause the overflow. Shared library in Genode must be position-independent?

Hi all: I am using Genode to do some SSL encryption stuff. My dev-board is i.MX6Quad running Genode 15.02. The OpenSSL version is 1.0.1i. I test the Crypto speed of OpenSSL in Genode. It's very slow( 7MB/s for aes-128-gcm) comparing to OpenSSL in Linux (16MB/s for aes-128-gcm). Genode's OpenSSL doesn't use the assembly code version of some critical crypto function. It disable this option in libcrypto.mk. If I do the same to Linux OpenSSL, the performance goes down to 9MB/s. So I enable this option in libcrypto.mk. use Genode compiler to compile it. Everything seems ok. No compiler/linker errors. But the program can not run. MMU exception occurs before the main program start. It seems that something goes wrong during the library loading. I am really confused. Why does Genode disable this assembly code option? ( I can only find a 1-sentence explaination on Genode release notes 12.08 <http://genode.org/documentation/release-notes/12.08> Because libcrypto provides certain optimized assembler functions, which > unfortunately are not expressed with position-independent code, we removed > this assembler code and build libcrypto with -DOPENSSL_NO_ASM I guess the loader of Genode can not handle load-time relocation for shared library so all shared library must be position independent. Given Kenton's concern for security in SandStorm.io <https://sandstorm.io/>.. and that it's unlikely that Linux, with it's humongous monolithic kernel, will ever deliver anything that resembles real security.. .. so I'm wondering if it might be a good match to look at running SandStorm.io <https://sandstorm.io/> severs within the Genode OS <http://genode.org/> ? To further fill out a possible vision: I just ordered a couple of Pine_64, Quadcore ARM64 boards <https://www.pine64.com/> (with 2GB of ram).. I am currently bringing up the code for Social Decision System kernel based upon the Groves-Clarke Mechanism <http://www.econ.ucsb.edu/~tedb/Courses/UCSBpf/pflectures/groves.pdf>, which is essentially the ideal when it comes to Strategic Voting Game Theoretic Mechanism Design <http://www.eecs.harvard.edu/~parkes/pubs/ch2.pdf>.. while the Python / C++11 code is still in an embryonic state... the underlying theory for how this Game Theoretic solver would operate is fairly far along.. The plan is to open source this solver code, once it passes a full set of included cross validation unit tests. I have been looking at how this Groves-Clarke Mechanism <http://www.econ.ucsb.edu/~tedb/Courses/UCSBpf/pflectures/groves.pdf> solver can be deployed across a network, to permit this algorithm to scale up to tackle larger problems in Information / Game Social Choice <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_choice_theory> theory. (i.e, the longer term direction of our democracy)... I was encouraged to find Kenton's 2nd generation work Cap'n-proto <https://capnproto.org/> which I gather provides some of SandStorm.io <https://sandstorm.io/>'s core network functionality... a clear advance in the state of networked system affairs... I also have taken notice of Genode's Server framework <http://genode.org/documentation/api/base_index#Inter-process_communication>.. and I would like to leverage the advanced perspectives of both, as I construct the network services layer that will underlie this computer assisted support of a truly democratic Social Decision system. my wish list is as follows: 1. Genode might somday run on ARMv8 (64bit)... It would be great if the Pine_64 would eventualy run Genode right out of the box.. 2.Cap'n-proto <https://capnproto.org/> might be supported within the Genode ecosystem... and that a collaboration between Kenton and Norman... might end up yielding the nicest Client / Server framework / protocol stack the world might have the privilege to enjoy. 3. Hello Genode Community! I'm Pramod, a student in Computer Engineering. As a project assignment, we were asked to search for new developments in software/hardware used for embedded applications and do a presentation on it to the class. I was searching for a topic when I stumbled upon Genode. I read through some of the documentation and I think I do understand a little bit. But I still have some confusion about it. Therefore I decided to contact you for help. Here are few questions I have to raise: Genode is an OS framework. It is not an OS on it's own accord but could just supply a bare minimum kernel functionality for some OS you would develop. Am I correct here? Please correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I understood, other microkernels such as L4 do a similar thing. How is Genode different? Also, can you run a mainstream OS such as Ubuntu on top of Genode with or without modifications ? Genode can also run virtually on top of another OS and the developers run it this way for development purposes. Is this correct? And the most importantly, what tasks Genode good for ? And what is it not suitable for? Please understand that I'm just starting on learning OSes. So please bear with my dumb questions. Thank you, Regards, Pramod

software time controller

Hi Everyone, We're porting the Genode timer to the riscv architecture. We've created a prototype which works, however we have some concerns regarding the integration with Genode, and whether timer features may or may not work correctly. Looking at the examples from other architectures the common way to port the timer is through a hardware time controller which is available through memio. The riscv core does not have a time controller available in its default configuration. (riscv offers a register based approach, however those registers are not accessible by the timer process since it does not run with the right cpu privileges). In order to get the the timer working on riscv we created a software time controller which works via memio. The time operations are performed by the scheduler which does have the right privileges to access the riscv core's timer registers. This is the approach we took: - Declare a region of normal memory as io-memory (our virtual/software time controller). ( through modification of base-hw/src/core/spec/riscv/platform_support.cc ) - Give the timer process MEM_IO and IRQ access, and access the memory region, to 1) read the time from a specific address, 2) set the alarm time and sleep waiting for a signal to be woken up by setting the timer process to wait for an unused irq with number IRQ#. - Modify the scheduling function which is executing with Supervisor privileges, to perform the following tasks whenever the job scheduler is called: 1) read the time from the register write it to the io-memory region 2) read the alarm value from another address in the io-memory region, and if it's set: compare this to the current time and and if the alarm time has expired signal User_irq with number IRQ#. ( through modifications in base-hw/src/core/kernel/cpu.cc ) - Timer wakes up and continues to-do whatever timers do. This approach works in the spike simulator: We can run the run/hello target, where the process blocks for a while, and wakes up by the timer again. Our concern is with the following items: - Will this support all the features a timer needs? Did we take the right approach here? - Can we be sure the memory we now allocated for our software time controller, won't be allocated for other uses later? - We've made some riscv-specific changes in non risc-v source code. Is the scheduler the best place to make these changes? Is there a possibility to move these changes to a riscv specific directory and call these with a callback, so that the code still works for other platforms. Regards, Menno
