Questions regarding Issue #4323

Hello, I'm a final year CS B.S. student. I was looking for an interesting project / thesis for my Bachelor and my professor suggested I take a look into Genode (besides other things). I find the project fascinating, even though I don't nearly possess enough information to fully understand it. Browsing through the issue tracker, I saw Issue #4323, regarding a possible memory leak. To my understanding, this would be a very easy fix, just free the void pointer that was allocated. Is that enough? I've also found one other place (and there could be more) where this happens again. The same idea -> allocated memory that doesn't get deallocated if the mapping fails. How should I go about helping with this? Search for such spots and add a deallocation for each I find, then create a pull request? Thanks in advance, Costinteo

Current status of genode golang port

Hello Genodians I have a SIMCOM 7600G mPCI modem, which I have configured to use MBIM mode. What I do not understand is that a service `sms` is reported, however the SIM in use doesn't support sending/receiving of SMS. In rare cases the following message also appears in the output: ``` [init -> usb_modem_drv] dev_err: nonzero urb status received: -EPIPE ``` I'm not sure if it is related, but as the modem is connected via USB it could be. I have a PinePhone. I'm currently using mobian + phosh but I do see there is tremendous scope in battery optimization and I would love to test genode on PinePhone. I have convergence edition. CBE deadlock

Hello Genodians Unfortunatly, I've discovered a deadlock with CBE when using the test/block/client on it's encrypted volume via the vfs_block. Component communication over ethernet using VDE switches

Hello, I am currently writing a program which boils down to a few components communicating over Ethernet using sockets. This works well utilizing the nic_router functionality, but I would like to emulate a more realistic scenario with the components being started from their own respective run scripts. I know for a fact that this was possible using the VDE switch functionality of QEMU in late 2015, but can't get it to work now the same way it used to, which simply consisted of starting the switch in a terminal and appending -net vde,sock=<switch location> to the QEMU args. No errors or warnings are thrown. Does anybody have recent experience with VDE switches or knows anything similar that could be used to achieve a more lifelike scenario? If possible, examples of such run scripts would be very helpful. Thanks in advance for your assistance. Kind regards, Kevin Burton

sleep and/or keyboard listen

Hello Genodians, is it possible to have the main thread either sleep for a specific amount of time or have it wait for a keyboard input? If yes, how would I go about implementing it? I have read online that the Timer service is in charge of sleeps, but I haven't found a way to use it at all. Thanks in advance for your help. Kind regards, Kevin Burton

Troubleshooting interrupt delivery

Hi, after some time of inactivity I decided to get back to my work on porting Genode to different Raspberry Pi devices. As in the meantime major blocker (problem with usb host) seem to by resolved and much improvements in multiple aspects related to introducing new boards (platform driver, unified naming of depot packages, etc.) I'm optimistic about results. However I run into a problem that stopped me for quite some time now and I'm getting out of ideas. I started with an attempt to make run/ping work on Raspberry Pi 2. I thought that it will be a straightforward work as: * it already works on Raspberry Pi 1 * Raspberry Pi 2 is has the same usb and network device * interrupt controller is similar and I already have implementation for it working on some earlier Genode release With addition of some logs I've verified that on both variants (Pi 1 and Pi 2): * 'rpi_usb_host_drv' asked for a device from 'rpi_new_platform_drv' * 'Irq_session_component::sigh(...) was called for IRQ 9 (usb device interrupt) - I believe that it was due to rpc from 'rpi_usb_host_drv' * 'Irq::Context' constructor was called in 'rpi_usb_host_drv' and after that 'Irq_session_component::sigh()' and 'Irq_session_component::ack_irq()' were called for interrupt 9 * after some device driver initialization and discovery 'rpi_usb_host_drv' prints log 'dev_dbg: Calling enable_global_interrupts' and after that IRQ 9 is detected in `bcm2835_pic.cc` and 'Kernel::User_irq::occured()' for that interrupt is called. After that there is a difference. On a Raspberry Pi 1 'Lx_kit::Irq::Context::handle_irq()' in 'rpi_usb_host_drv' is executed but it doesn't on version 2. As I verified that interrupt is detected and processed AFAIU properly on base-hw level I don't see other device specific things that can cause this behavior. Is it possible that new platform driver somehow 'blocks' this interrupt delivery? I don't see how would that be as calls to 'sigh()' and 'ack_irq()' worked. Can someone share some ideas what can be wrong or how should I try to debug such problem? Maybe that is something obvious and only I can't find it. Currently my branch is based on master from the middel of August and if that can help I can publish it after some minor cleanup. Tomasz Gajewski

Updating from Sculpt 21.03 -------------------------- Users of Sculpt 21.03 will feel just at home with the new version. When updating to the new version, please nevertheless pay attention to the following changes. - Should you use a manually managed NIC-router configuration, note that the attribute 'dns_server_from' has been renamed to 'dns_config_from'. - For using VirtualBox 6 instead of VirtualBox 5, note that the machine configuration file is not 100% compatible. For this reason, version 6 requests a file named 'machine.vbox6'. So you can maintain the machine configurations for both versions side by side. A working template for a 'machine.vbox6' file comes installed along with the vbox6 package. You can find it at depot/genodelabs/raw/vbox6/2021-10-05/machine.vbox6 Note that version 6 is not time-tested yet. Please use it with caution. - The RTC driver is no longer part of the base system but is now provided as an optional component called "system clock-pc". It is available in the tools menu of the genodelabs depot. - The recall_fs launcher has been replaced by the recall_fs package, which eases the use of multiple instances of the component, e.g., one in front of the file vault and one behind the file vault. - Depot index files are now annotated with the CPU architectures supported by the author.
