Dear Sculpt OS users,
I'm happy to announce today's release of Sculpt OS version 26.10:
https://genode.org/news/sculpt-os-release-26.10
Highlights are the switch to Genode's custom microkernel by default, resilience against USB-host driver failures, the completed transition from XML to HID as configuration format, VirtualBox 7, and the wholly updated arsenal of DDE-Linux-based drivers.
Functionality-wise, the biggest leap is certainly the new ability to run the Goa SDK directly on Sculpt OS with no virtualization crutches needed. Since we declared this ambition at the beginning of this year, we had been busy with the porting of tools like Git, CMake, Expect, Sequoia, and many others. This porting work was pursued in close alignment with the re-organization of Genode-World [1] as a repository of Goa projects, and the steady improvement of the Goa SDK [2] itself. In tandem with the nurturing of the ported 3rd-party software, we tirelessly improved Genode's integration of POSIX and the VFS. In fact, almost no stone of those foundations remained unturned. The resulting ready-to-install Goa SDK packages are available at the depot of cproc. Further info will appear at Genodians.org soon.
Seasoned Sculpt OS users can find the new version readily available via the system-update dialog. For new users, the official Sculpt OS download page is the best starting point. It provides ready-to-use images for PCs, the PinePhone, as well as the i.MX-based MNT Reform laptop.

As a note of caution, even though the switch of the kernel and the updated drivers are meant to be transparent to Sculpt OS users, a few rough edges must be expected. In particular, users relying on suspend/resume may better wait for the 26.10.1 version.
Hoping that you will appreciate the new version,
Norman
