Hello,
it is my pleasure to announce the release of Sculpt OS 23.10:
https://genode.org/news/sculpt-os-release-23.10
The highlight is certainly the new ability to fine-tune physical CPU parameters via an interactive user interface, which is especially useful on modern laptops that offer plenty of monitoring and power-management options. As described in the following article, one can watch CPU temperatures and frequencies, dynamically adjust performance profiles, unveil the differences between Intel's P&E cores, and even observe the power draw.

Besides this most prominent feature, the new version benefits from Genode's advances during the past 6 months. E.g., the former iPXE-based network driver has been replaced by a current Linux driver, the entire software is now consistently built with GCC 12.3, and Sculpt's runtime is now driven by the new monitor runtime paving the ground towards on-target debugging.
We made the new version readily available for both PCs and the PinePhone. The latter benefits from several usability improvements such as a screensaver conserving battery power, various UI tweaks, and functional volume buttons.
Users of Sculpt 23.04 can switch to the new version via the built-in system-update dialog. New users can find ready-to-use disk images at the Sculpt download page.

Up-to-date Sculpt documentation is available on our website and as PDF.

As you may have noticed on the mailing list, Sculpt 23.10 is the first version that was preceded by several release candidates (RC). Thanks to everyone who gave the RCs a spin. The official release greatly benefited from your feedback!
Cheers Norman
I tested the pinephone image on my Beta Convergence edition.
I congratulate the team for this unmatched achievement. The system is quite amazing.
I tried morph browser and it worked amazingly.
Heating of quectel chip is quite high.
What is the right way to access applications and correctly shut them down. Camera Test worked well in black and white mode. Call and 4G internet worked phenomenally with my Jio sim.
Issues I think that need improvement wrt basic functionality: Adding lock screen and unlock screen hardware button. Sometimes, I guess where heating was high, screen automatically went black. Does the screen itself use such amounts of power?
I would love to switch to using Genode full time if it gets, a browser, a window manager, xmpp client and mail client which I can safely start and shut down.
I was unable to understand how to start the window manager available in genodelabs repo. Thanking you Sagar Acharya https://humaaraartha.in/selfdost/selfdost.html

Hello Sagar,
thank you for the enthusiastic feedback!
Sometimes, I guess where heating was high, screen automatically went black. Does the screen itself use such amounts of power?
The screen goes black after one minute of inactivity to save power. Press the power button to re-enable it. Note that it can take two seconds until the GUI re-appears (startup time of the display and touchscreen drivers).
I would love to switch to using Genode full time if it gets, a browser, a window manager, xmpp client and mail client which I can safely start and shut down.
You may find the window-manager preset helpful, which is offered by Sculpt since version 23.04.
Once you have selected your Sculpt partition and are connected to the network, a "System" menu should appear at the upper-left screen corner. There you can load the preset "window manager", which entails all components needed for a simple desktop: a window manager, backdrop, and a system shell. That's a suitable starting point for adding further applications like the Falkon web browser (installable from cproc's depot).
Cheers Norman
Dear Sculpt-OS users,
following up to the Sculpt 23.10 release, I'd like to share a few pointers closely related to the new version.
1. I wrote up a summary of the improvements from my personal perspective in [1].
