Toolchain out of date?

Dear people of Genode-labs, After a long time lurking, I wanted to give it a spin. These are my experiences: I installed an Ubuntu-12.04-03 iso on a virtual-box vm. I downloaded: genode-14.02.tar.bz2 and genode-toolchain-12.11-x86_64.tar.bz2 Unpacked according to instructions. When trying the make run/demo from the 'getting started' page I get this error: $ make run/demo /bin/bash: /usr/local/genode-gcc/bin/genode-x86-g++: cannot execute binary file and more of these for other binaries from the toolchain, eg gcc, ar, etc. Some investigations: $ file /usr/local/genode-gcc/bin/genode-x86-g++ /usr/local/genode-gcc/bin/genode-x86-g++: ELF 64-bit LSB executable, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux 2.6.15, BuildID[sha1]=0xe8a025bec16cdc16afa6cc41c05e1bdf19a9fbc4, stripped $ ldd /usr/local/genode-gcc/bin/genode-x86-g++ not a dynamic executable $ cat /proc/version Linux version 3.8.0-29-generic (buildd@...232...) (gcc version 4.6.3 (Ubuntu/Linaro 4.6.3-1ubuntu5) ) #42~precise1-Ubuntu SMP Wed Aug 14 15:31:16 UTC 2013 Compiling the tool-chain using tool/tool-chain script gave a working compiler and a running demo! I guess, the latest tool-chain 12.11 is out of date for the latest Ubuntu. I hope to post more experiences later on. With regards, Guido Witmond.

Genode System Architecture and Configuration Questions,

Hi Genode Engineers. I've been following the Genode project for a few years, and I'm very excited about it's progress. I've worked through some of the build instructions, and read most of the documentation on the website. I've been able to test out various run files, and I want to begin porting some stuff. I just have a few questions, which would help me understand how you envision the system level considerations. 1. Do any library level diagrams or flowcharts exist? Specifically to describe at which point various pieces funnel together? Maybe something with details comparable to Linux_Graphics_Stack_2013.svg<http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c2/Linux_Graphics_Stack_201…> ? 2. How are shared configuration files handled? For example, system level configurations often found in /etc? Thanks Everyone, -J.

Hello, As far as the session interfaces are concerned, the framework is very intricately designed (hats off). Connection->Client->Capability->Session. If I want to call a function defined by the session interface, one has to include the <session_name>/connection.h and make a call which then calls the Rpc_functionName. My question is this: Where is the body of such functions defined? Is there a framework that dictates where the body of the function goes? More specifically, this doubt came up when exploring the Attached_io_mem_dataspace which contains a function called dataspace(). Recently, my friend Aditya posted this<http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_name=CANhviG0%3DKY2%3D%…> and it gave the error 'No RM attachment', which is found in the function print_page_fault defined in util.h. My assertion is that a component that uses the MMIO class initlaiised with this dataspace().local_addr() rather than the physical address itself. Long story short, what could have caused this page fault? Thanks in advance, Meenakshi.

Trying to boot run/demo on i.MX6

Hello all, Continuing on our efforts to provide a Genode port to Freescale i.MX6, we tried running the demo scenario by simply porting the extensive i.MX53 driver written by Stefan; i.MX6 is merely an upgrade but it still uses same IPU defs, except for different address spaces for the registers which were appropriately modified. A subsequent compilation and boot of the image resulted in the following error: Any thoughts on how to tackle ? [init -> fb_drv] Could not open file "config" [init -> fb_drv] Could not obtain config file no RM attachment (faulter 1059508c with IP 1000861c attempts to write to address 244000) unknown signal context Thanks and Regards Aditya.

Runtime verbosity

Hello I get the usage of make VERBOSE_MK= VERBOSE_DIR= VERBOSE= during the build process. But is there any terminal level verbosity option? The closest I've got to, is in the configuration of the init process, by specifying 'verbose="yes"' in the config node. Is there much deeper verbose output such as function calls and argument list printing? Thanks and regards Aditya.

Just an idea about virtualbox

Greetings All, I hope that you are all doing well today. My learning is proceeding well with regards to NOVA and Genode. I truly do like this work and am excited to start doing more as I get better familiarized with the inner-workings. My particular interest is with NOVA + Genode + Seoul (or similar VMM) for various work that I am looking into at the moment. With that in mind, a thought had occurred to me and I wanted to ask the group for your thoughts in this area. As you know, there are a number of other open source hypervisors (Type 1 and Type 2) with on of them being Virtualbox (Oracle) that runs well as a Type 2 hypervisor. My understanding is that Virtualbox is also reasonably easy to port to other platforms as well. The power of Virtualbox is that it is very mature at this point and I was wondering. Would there be an advantage to have Virtualbox ported to Genode to run under NOVA? The idea is that since it is already fairly mature, then perhaps it might make a very stable and suitable VMM (in place of Seoul) so that Genode (under NOVA) could run general purposes commodity OS's like Windows and Linux. I am sure that this would be a lot of work, but it seems that that might be an interesting idea. Any comments? Kind Regards and have a great day, Lonnie

ARM trust zone and Wayland on Genode?

Hi Fellow Genodians- It seems like Genode's secure display windows are off to a good start with "Nitpicker"... ...What is happening so that the Wayland display compositor will be able to in some way run withing the Genode OS? Where might I find more info on the efforts to run Genode within ARM TrustZone... Thanks -Peter

iMX53 M4IF Watermark Regions for TrustZone

The iMX53 security manual and multimedia ref manual states that there is a configurable set of registers in the CSU that control watermark regions on the M4IF. I am grepping thru genode code but can't find this code. Is there some module/driver that handles these registers? -Earlence
