16.11 build fails on boot image creation

Hi, I'm moving from 16.08 to 16.11. I had previously built and run my custom os and apps successfully on releases since 14.xx. The kernel is base-hw and the platform is based on TI's AM437x. Using the same make script that I used in 16.08, the script successfully built all the components on 16.11 without error. However, in the last stage, to build the boot image, it first failed with the error "unknown platform no linker address known". I traced this to a new tool module, tool/run/boot_dir/hw. Apparently this script requires that each unique base-hw kernel platform have a table entry that contains the name used for the platform plus an address which I assume is the load address for the boot image. Is there a documentation update describing this new feature in a bit more detail than the paragraph in the release notes? Adding to the table the necessary entry and running the make script again produced another error which has me stuck. The full make output is attached but the error that is now occurring complains that modules have been built for hardware floating point but the libgcc.a is not built to using the vector floating point register arguments. The message output for one of the libgcc.a modules is: /opt/usr-local/genode-gcc/bin/../lib/gcc/arm-none-eabi/4.9.2/../../../../arm-none-eabi/bin/ld: error: var/run/rico_fs.core uses VFP register arguments, /opt/usr-local/genode-gcc/bin/../lib/gcc/arm-none-eabi/4.9.2/libgcc.a(_fixsfdi.o) does not Since release 15.02 I've been compiling some of the modules with floating point hardware flagged on, so rico_fs.core does indeed have VFP register usage in it. So why is this error showing up now and not in prior releases and how may I fix it? Thanks, Bob Stewart Get Outlook for Android

Hi, I really like Genode's Register API as it makes accessing memory mapped hardware registers quite clean and simple. However, I recently encountered the need to access a rather complex I2C slave device. The I2C controller itself is accessible via MMIO. Yet, the slave device itself has a notion of registers. Basically, you first send the register address to the I2C slave and, in a second transaction, you can read/write the register's value. Being used to the clean appearance of MMIO in Genode, I was wondering whether the access to I2C slave registers could be wrapped in a similar way. My intuition is that it might simply suffice to inherit from the Mmio class and modify the write<>() and read<>() functions but haven't checked the code in detail. Any suggestions/ideas? Intel WiFi cards and driver support

Hi all, I got new toy, a Thinkpad x220, to play with the Turmvilla scenario. Unfortunately, it only came with a single-band wifi card (Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000). I'm therefore thinking about replacing it with one of the compatible dual-band cards. I'd like to ask if anyone has experience with using the wifi driver for any of these candidates: - Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 - Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 Cheers Johannes

Including debugging info in binaries

Hey, I am using Genode to build a project based upon base-hw. I now want to include debugging information in the final binary. It seems the debugging information is available in the intermediate binaries, but not in the final one since it is stripped. How can I stop the Genode toolchain from throwing away the debugging information? Greetings, Christoph

Pulsar PXE boot?

Greetings, I'm trying to get the NOVA/lighttpd scenario booting off real hardware as the VM solutions are not applicable in my potential use cases. PXE is generally painless but using Pulsar on both an Intel i5 NUC and an N3150 (Quad Celeron) the boot process gets this far: https://novadsp.com/images/genode/pulsar-boot.jpg and then falls silent. Does anyone recognize the issue? Is the Pulsar source code available? DD'ing the lighttpd .iso image to a USB drive is odd too. On both machines I get dumped into the grub shell. I note that it's a very old version (0.97?) Is there any reason for this? Please bear with me whilst I get all of the Genode basics worked out here! MTIA, Jerry.

Solved. Now booting lighttpd on an N3150 board. > DD'ing the lighttpd .iso image to a USB drive is odd too. On both machines I get dumped into the grub shell. For anyone else with the same problem: https://github.com/genodelabs/genode/blob/master/doc/release_notes-14-08.txt #L1105 BTW A serial connection is IMO absolutely critical for real hardware work. (New to Genode) A couple of questions ...

Greetings, I'm experimenting with Genode/NOVA on x64 for some embedded work, version 16.08 building on Ubuntu 16.04. I'm trying to assemble a minimal (headless) platform with TCP/IP and USB support. The idea is to run a single custom control application on the platform. If anyone has a schema/scenario that is close to this pattern they'd care to share I'd be very grateful. But by way of getting underway ... I started with netperf_lxip as this does have the network stack and USB but I get this: $ ./tool/ports/prepare_port nova $ ./tool/create_builddir nova_x86_64 BUILD_DIR=build.nova $ make -C build.nova run/netperf_lxip make: Entering directory '/home/jevans/src/genode/build.nova' including /home/jevans/src/genode/tool/run/boot_dir/nova including /home/jevans/src/genode/tool/run/power_on/qemu including /home/jevans/src/genode/tool/run/log/qemu including /home/jevans/src/genode/tool/run/image/iso including /home/jevans/src/genode/repos/ports/run/netperf_lxip.run Netperf running on Qemu is not recommended. make: Leaving directory '/home/jevans/src/genode/build.nova' and no build outputs whatsoever. Any thoughts on this? Lighttpd _does_ build out of the box and appears to run OK under QEMU but if I boot the image in VMWare I get Promisc is off Bender: Hello World. Need 0067b000 bytes to relocate modules. Relocating to 07965000: Copying 6651920 bytes... Copying 138968 bytes... And the VM then locks before the 'NOVA Microhypervisor v7-4d6f04d (x86_64): Dec 2 2016 17:01:35 [gcc 4.9.2]' banner appears. Once again any thoughts on how to proceed here much appreciated. Announcement: Genode OS Framework version 16.11 released

In the new release, we revisited the most fundamental aspect of the framework - the interplay between parent and child components. We replaced the fully synchronous model of communication in this constellation by asynchronous communication to vastly improve scalability and reduce the effort of thorough evaluation of crucial system components. Further, we refined the design and configuration interface of our NIC-router component to ease its application in common use cases. Additional highlights are NOVA kernel improvements, VirtualBox version updates, and support for smart cards. Assembly at 33C3?

Hi Genode hackers, recently, the call for participation for the 33th Chaos Communication Congress [1] has been released, an amazing event I very much enjoy attending for quite a few years now. This year, I'm thinking about organising an assembly at which I can focus on some side projects of mine that are partly Genode related. For those of you who are not familiar with the concept: An assembly is a self-organised get-together and typically targeted at a certain topic. I.e. it can be a place for exchanging ideas, lively discussion and even collaborative hacking, and all of this for the entire congress. ;-) As the Genode community seems to be growing, I'd like to ask whether someone here is 1) considering attending the 33C3 and 2) interested in an assembly about Genode-related projects? @GenodeLabs: I reckon that the date of the congress might not be very convenient for some of you. Nevertheless, I think it'd be great having one or more Genode experts at the congress to represent the project properly.
