newbie questions

Hello, I'm an amateur//hobbyist programmer who is very interested capability operating systems. I have just found this project and have started reading the documentation. I have some questions regarding the "Interfaces and Mechanisms" document- sorry if these have already been asked (if so just point me to where I can already find the answers). 1- Is there anyway that a child can be endowed with any extra capabilities to server services at creation by its parent? Or is it always the case that the child always has to be first created without any extra capabilities and only after it is created then can it gain external caps by requesting a service by way of its parent? 2- In the documentation it says that the parent of a server is given the root_capability to any services announced by the child and this cap is intended to be used and kept by the parent only. Is this cap actually copyable and transferrable? And does it really matter if the parent gives this cap away? This last question may seem really dumb since it goes against the whole point of having an acylic tree of parent to children nodes to facilitate reasoning about the TCB, however, if you haven't actually stopped the parent from been able to give it away shouldn't you assume that it will give it away? 3- The documentation mentions the use of unix file permissions. Are access control lists and file permissions to be planned/implemented in the file servers within the genode project? If they are, it is there a possibility for a confused deputies to arise since the clients request services by using serive_name and arg strings instead of capabilities? >From what I naively understand about capability based OSes is that you either have to provide a persistent state mechanism or an ACL like regime to be able to recreate the capability network at power-up after shut-down/crash-recovery. Is it possible for a system to be built using genode framework which is orthognally persistent and thus drop the use of ACL's? Lastly, I think there is a very slight mistake in the "Interfaces and Mechanisms" document in the "Servers" section towards the very end in the sentence "The session capability, created by Child1 (4), can now be passed to Child1 as return value of nested session calls (5, 6).": shouldn't the second mention of "Child1" actually be "Parent2"?) This looks like a very interesting project with fantasic potential! Thanks for creating it! Announcement: Genode OS Framework version 9.02 released
by Norman Feske 27 May '09

27 May '09

We have made the version 9.05 of the Genode OS Framework available. After the previous release 9.02 had brought Genode to the Pistachio kernel, we have now further enhanced the number of usable base platforms by adding support for the OKL4 kernel developed by Open Kernel Labs. In addition to the improved platform support, the new version brings major functional improvements including the first parts of our USB stack, 64-bit support, and the integration of the Qt 4.5.1 application framework into our main-line source tree. Release notes for version 9.05 ------------------------------ * Applications * Integration of Qt4 * Qt4-based launchpad * OS services and drivers * GUI performance tweaks * Virtualized PCI bus for VESA driver * USB session and device interface * USB support * USB HID driver * Host controller drivers for UHCI, OHCI, and EHCI * OKL4 as new platform * 64-bit Linux platform support * Base framework refinements Please find more in-depth information in our detailed release notes: http://genode.org/documentation/release-notes/9.05 The new release is available to the project's subversion repository and at the Genode download page: http://genode.org/download/latest-release With the release of Genode 9.05, it is time to update our road map. The following release will bring many refinements that improve performance and memory usage, and bring the different platform implementations on par with each other. Towards the end of the year, we plan to enable the execution of plain POSIX programs via one or multiple POSIX execution environments running as Genode sub systems. The updated road map is available at: http://genode.org/about/road-map Regards -- Norman Feske Genode Labs http://www.genode-labs.com · http://genode.org

Using Genode with Existing L4Ka::Pistachio Components?
by Tyson Key 15 Apr '09

15 Apr '09

Hi, out of interest, is it possible to easily use Genode alongside existing L4 components (e.g. L4Linux, Darbat or custom servers)? Or would I have to rewrite the components to fit into the Genode architecture? Also, I'm trying to figure out what the best way to solve a potential license conflict will be (other than don't use the new code/implement the feature at all, hopefully), given that Genode is released under the GPLv2, and some components I'm planning to keep separate in their own servers/libraries to build an accompanying Personality on top of Genode will be released under the Eclipse Public License by the Symbian Foundation soon. Cannot Link Genode 9.02 for L4Ka::Pistachio (With minimal customisation for i9)
by Tyson Key 12 Apr '09

12 Apr '09

Hi, I am currently working on a new L4Ka::Pistachio-based operating system project, and am contemplating integrating Genode components. Sadly, in the process of integrating Genode into the build system, I've noticed that the linking stage fails towards the end of building core with the following: /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -ll4 collect2: ld returned 1 exit status make[2]: *** [/home/tyson/i9os/Personalities/GenodeKit/build.pistachio_x86/core/x86/core] Error 1 make[1]: *** [single_target] Error 2 make: *** [.] Error 2 I had to copy the L4 header files into /base-pistachio/include/, despite also having them in a location specified in build.pistachio_x86/etc/pistachio.conf. Even after running "make install" to copy the L4 userland libraries and header files to /usr/local, I'm stumped. File System Support
by Ashish Srivastava 09 Apr '09

09 Apr '09

Hi all, This is my first post to this list. Can some one please tell me whether there is any filesystem support available for Genode. In other words can I write on the hard disk or access it's ext2/ext3 partitions. If yes, then how to get it working. Refer me to some menu.lst file. And, do you use some different grub? Also I need some help on building genode properly to get 'everything' working. By the way is their support for USB Mouse/Keyboard. Regards, Ashish

Announcement: Genode OS Framework version 9.02 released
by Christian Helmuth 27 Feb '09

27 Feb '09

We are pleased to announce the release 9.02 of the Genode OS Framework. This release is focused on functional enhancements in two directions. The first direction is broadening the number of possible base platforms for the framework. Genode 9.02 is now available on the L4ka::Pistachio kernel. In the second direction, we are steadily advancing the functionality available on top of Genode. With this release, we introduce a basic networking facility and support for native Qt4 applications as major new features. Thanks to Genode's portability, these features become automatically available on all supported base platforms. We would like to thank Julian Stecklina for his initial port of Genode to L4ka::Pistachio and Christian Prochaska for his Qt4 library porting work. Release notes for version 9.02 ------------------------------ * Applications * Launchpad XML configuration option * Qt4 core and GUI library port * OS services and drivers * PS/2 driver scancode set 1 fixes * Linux 2.6 device driver environment * Networking * Linux-based driver for AMD Pcnet32 * uIP-based example web server * L4ka::Pistachio as new platform * Revised malloc implementation for the C library * Tool for ISO image creation and boot with Qemu Read our comprehensive release notes for the version 9.02 at our website http://genode.org/documentation/release-notes/9.02/ Download the release 9.02 of the Genode OS Framework from http://genode.org/download/latest-release/ Regards -- Christian Helmuth Genode Labs http://www.genode-labs.com/ · http://genode.org/

Genode on the L4ka::Pistachio kernel
by Norman Feske 18 Dec '08

18 Dec '08

Today, we have made the L4ka::Pistachio version of Genode publicly available via our subversion repository. The L4ka::Pistachio kernel is developed by the L4ka group at the University of Karlsruhe and the DiSy group at the University of New South Wales. It implements the latest official L4 API, which is called x.2 (alse referred to a version 4). The official L4ka::Pistachio website is: http://www.l4ka.org/projects/pistachio/ Although both L4 kernels L4ka::Pistachio and the already supported L4/Fiasco belong to the L4 family, they differ in many ways such as the supported CPU architectures, premptibility, kernel-API features, scheduling, stability, and their respective license. This makes the availability of both kernels as base platforms for Genode very attractive. The port of Genode to L4ka::Pistachio was primarily done by Julian Stecklina as a student research project at the University of Technology Dresden. In cooperation, we integrated his work with the mainline Genode development. The L4ka::Pistachio version will become a regular part of the official Genode distribution with upcoming release scheduled for February. You can find all the needed technical information about building and using Genode with L4ka::Pistachio at our Wiki: http://genode.org/community/wiki/GenodeOnL4kaPistachio Regards -- Norman Feske Genode Labs http://www.genode-labs.com · http://genode.org
