some minor suggestions

Hello all, happy new year! I've been away from the computer for a while and am starting to get back into programming. I'm keen focus on a couple of small personal Genode projects I've wanted to do for a some time. I've a few questions and suggestions to help build the Genode community from the perspective of a hobby programmer like me: 1) could you supply a logo to display on web-pages for linking back to the Genode web-site. 2) As-far-as I can see there is there no place on the Genode site for listing 3rd party associated projects- do you plan in the future to offer something like this? 3) I would like to make a small donation to this project- could you provide a bitcoin address? (It does give one a nice warm fuzzy feeling knowing that you've helped a project that you use) 4) Is it planned for Genode support secure booting and attestation in the future? Secure boot + local object-cap OS + web lends itself to many interesting project possibilies: eg- p2p social networking where the user has true control over their own personal info, or a fast and efficient p2p digital currency, etc. (I believe that there are drivers for the intel TPM chips in Linux--maybe these could help?) thanks ross mcginnis

Fwd: [Microkernel-devroom] Reminder: deadline for talk submissions is tomorrow
by Norman Feske 30 Dec '11

Hello, if you have a topic in mind that would be worthwhile to present at the microkernel devroom at FOSDEM 2012, please consider submitting your idea (by an informal posting to microkernel-devroom@...86...). It would be great to have a larger variety of contributions. Norman -------- Original Message -------- Subject: [Microkernel-devroom] Reminder: deadline for talk submissions is tomorrow Date: Fri, 30 Dec 2011 15:13:06 +0100 From: Jakub Jermar <jakub@...85...> Reply-To: Multiserver, microkernel-based operating systems devroom mailing list. <microkernel-devroom@...86...> To: Multiserver / microkernel-based operating systems devroom mailing list. <microkernel-devroom@...86...> Hello all, tomorrow is the last day before our devroom's deadline for talk proposal submissions. As of now, there are only four proposals from only two projects (HelenOS and Genode): Jakub Jermar: Welcome! or Why do we meet here today Norman Feske: Introduction of the Genode OS Framework Jiri Svoboda: Introduction to HelenOS Jakub Jermar: Fixing memory management in HelenOS It would be much better if we had talks from all participating projects and in a little bit greater quantity to make the devroom meet its intended purpose. Cheers, Jakub _______________________________________________ Microkernel-devroom mailing list Microkernel-devroom@...86... https://lists.fosdem.org/listinfo/microkernel-devroom

How to run Genode with L4Linux having only one RS232 port
by e.fedotov 29 Dec '11

29 Dec '11

Hello! I am trying Genode on some different ARM platforms such as: a) Nvidia Tegra 250 (Development Kit board) b) Beagle board (www.beagleboard.org) I have no problem to build and run Genode having FOC kernel support for these boards (working via UART terminal without graphics) But to run L4 Linux the Terminal session is needed, and that session can only be provided via user (not kernel) UART. But there is no possibility to use another UART, other than we have for kernel standard input/output (board b without extentions has only one RS232) So, is there any possibility to use only one terminal connection for kernel and l4linux simultaniously (the same console for input/output)? For example, a stub uart driver that redirects uart IO&interrupts to standard IO? 2) Have you intentions to add any of these ARM platform support in Genode (drivers for uart, display etc.)? The platforms above I think, are more avaliable than pbx-a9. All of the Best and Happy new Year, Evgeny.

Using libports
by Adi Lima 27 Dec '11

27 Dec '11

Hi, I am new to Genode, and still trying to understand how it works. But I've build several test using L4Ka::Pistachio base and of course Linux-based. I've found some very interesting ports while browsing $(GENODE_DIR)/libports, particularly the filesystem and block device related stuffs, because I don't know how to access the harddisk so far, unless using L4Linux with Fiasco.OC. Is there some example for using block_session for a simple client, maybe just to get partition info from a SATA disk? I need a starting point to use these stuffs :-) Thanks. Best regards, FX. J. 20 Dec '11

Hello, As announced earlier, Genode has got a new issue tracker at Github: http://github.com/genodelabs/genode/issues Please use this tracker to report and discuss Genode-related issues. The old public tracker at Sourceforge is still there but all issues have been either closed or migrated to Github. Cheers Norman -- Dr.-Ing. Fwd: [Microkernel-devroom] [TALK-PROPOSAL] Introduction of the Genode OS Framework
by Norman Feske 19 Dec '11

19 Dec '11

Hello all, here is my proposal about Genode's participation in the microkernel/multiserver devroom at the upcoming FOSDEM 2012, cross-posted from the microkernel-devroom@...86... mailing list. -------- Original Message -------- Subject: [Microkernel-devroom] [TALK-PROPOSAL] Introduction of the Genode OS Framework Date: Mon, 19 Dec 2011 10:55:50 +0100 From: Norman Feske <norman.feske@...1...> Reply-To: Multiserver, microkernel-based operating systems devroom mailing list. <microkernel-devroom@...86...> To: Multiserver, microkernel-based operating systems devroom mailing list. <microkernel-devroom@...86...> Dear devroom participants, Here is my talk proposal about the Genode project. [Title] Introduction of the Genode OS Framework [Full name] Norman Feske [Short bio] Norman is one of the founders and architects of the Genode project. In 2008, he co-founded Genode Labs - a company with the mission to transform this OS technology from an once obscure research project to a next-generation main-stream OS. [Estimated duration] 45 min [Abstract] Today's operating systems try to find a balance between seemingly conflicting goals. Ease of use is traded against security, resource utilization is traded against resource accountability, and system complexity is traded against scalability. For example, SELinux is ill famed as hard to use and consequently remains widely unused. As another example, isolation kernels minimize the complexity of critical system software but at the cost of limiting these solutions to static applications. The Genode OS architecture shows how these apparently inherent conflicts can be solved by operating-system design. By combining a recursive system structure with capability-based security, mandatory access control becomes easy to deploy. At the same time, the trusted computing base can be minimized for each application individually such that the attack surface for security-critical system functions gets reduced by orders of magnitude compared to existing approaches. Furthermore, a concept for trading physical resources among processes allows for dynamic workloads while maintaining quality of service. That is not just theory - the system is ready for demonstration and its developers are planning to use it as development environment by the end of 2012. After a brief introduction of where Genode comes from, the main part of the talk will be focused on the OS architecture and give a glimpse at the implementation via live demonstrations. Finally, the talk will briefly discuss the planned steps towards using Genode as general-purpose OS. _______________________________________________ Microkernel-devroom mailing list Microkernel-devroom@...86... https://lists.fosdem.org/listinfo/microkernel-devroom

Hello, just wanted to say that I only had good experiences so far with github, albeit with rather small codebases compared to Genode. Are there any other popular medium to large projects using github? Proposal for issue tracking
by Christian Helmuth 16 Dec '11

16 Dec '11

Hello everyone, we're now walking the open path. Therefore, I want to discuss my ideas about the future issue-tracking process of Genode here on the list. The challenge The current "process" of handling issues is rather pragmatic and little transparent for the community. Most issues are reported and discussed on this mailing list. Hence, reports are mostly unstructured and difficult to track. At Genode Labs, we maintain a private tracker for our projects partially of interest for the Genode community. So, the first step (as Norman already wrote) is to migrate these issues into a publicly accessible tracker. Furthermore, issues have some quirks to keep in mind when deciding upon on a tracking process. First, apparently resolved issues may rise from grave and it's precious to have their history at hand to fight them back. Also, the resolution of closed issues should be accessible in the code repository to know when and how it works. Sometimes it's also good to find out who fixed the issue and, thus, have a contact for further questions. Finally, a well maintained issue database reflects the current stage and activity of the project, assists contributors to get started, and reflects which missing features are already in the back of our minds. We decided to go for a public Git-based repository for Genode sources and, so, it is natural to go for an open collaboration model. Two widely used models are the "Fork + pull-request model" and patch-based integration. IMO both should be supported. In the following, I will now and then evaluate features available from GitHub to our requirements. We did not finally choose GitHub but I must admit I'm a strong proponent of this platform. Reporting an issue We definitely need a simple guide on "How to report an issue" to avoid the tedious question-and-answer game. My proposal is: 1. Summarize important information of your issue in the _title_. 2. Start the _body_ with steps to reproduce it. Name the affected version/commit. 3. Sketch the expected behaviour. 4. Detail what happened instead. The life cycle of an issue After the issue was reported it will undergo a life cycle until it's eventually closed. Each life stage depends on the issue type and the steps taken to resolve it. The important issue types I identified are _bug_, _feature_, and _documentation_. The issue type should be marked in the tracker and may be used for filtering/sorting. If someone works on a reported issue, he may want to submit a fix as _patch_ or as _pull_ request. Pull request should come from a persistent topic branch in a fork of the main repository. So, the issue and its history can be tracked in the future. The fact of a submitted fix shall also be marked in the tracker. Moreover, discussions upon an issue should be attached to the issue in the tracker. Eventually, a decision on the issue will be reached, which can be that a _fix_ was accepted or incorporated, the issue was identified as a _duplicate_ of an older issue filed, or the issue was _rejected_ by some cause. If the issue revives it may be reopened and the cycle starts over. Some optional features I did not investigate further, but that may become useful are: assignment to team members, tagging an affected release version, and an urgency marker. Does it work every day with GitHub? To get hands-on with the issue tracking I added a playground repository to my GitHub account. The associated issue tracker can be found under https://github.com/chelmuth/playground/issues I added _tags_ to mark all the information mentioned before. The integration of Git and the GitHub platform is quite good. Issues can be referenced in discussion threads of other issues as well as in commit messages via '#<issue number>', e.g., #1. Issues also have their own URL, e.g., https://github.com/chelmuth/playground/issues/4 Issues even can be closed from commit messages. The committer just adds a recognizable text, e.g., 'Fixes #3'. For more information have a look at https://github.com/blog/831-issues-2-0-the-next-generation Another interesting feature is the reference of other developers on GitHub via '@<username>', e.g. @chelmuth. Hence, the involvement of potential contributors into the discussion is straightforward. Finally, GitHub provides (on the web and via the 'hub' tool [1]) excellent integration of the fork+pull collaboration model. This feature is described in detail at http://help.github.com/send-pull-requests/ The idea of handling pull requests like issues including a discussion thread is great. I'm looking forward to your feedback. Session object pool
by Александр Домо 08 Dec '11

08 Dec '11

Hello! I'm writing a server application which acts as a communicator between it's clients. Each of my sessions needs to know about other active sessions, so what I'd like to know is if there is a way to access the session object pool directly, or should I maintain my own list of running sessions? Also, a question about "doing it the right way". I transfer data chunks (not more than several Kbytes) to/from clients using RPC calls (initiated by clients), and I use Signal_transmitter objects to notify clients about data & other stuff. Is that normal? ;) Thanks! A.D.
