copyrights, patents, IP and integrity.

I see a lot of the Genode work stems from and continues at various universities. Asides from the GPL, BSD, and original MIT (I think) licensing there is little mention of patent applications and holders. I believe that honesty is paramount in any endeavor, business or community. Otherwise it could hardly be called "community" to begin with and though the term business may be skewed in many people's minds I for one uphold it as endeavors with integrity that are socially responsible. Reciprocity goes well beyond open source code. Respect for other's work and, especially, valuation of others' time is the true measure of reciprocity. Genode seems ok on the surface but untill it demonstrates clearly what it has in mind for the quality of life, for the valuation of others' time, and how it intends to contribute back in terms of work to the people that supported the entire university system to begin with it is nothing more than another deceptive attempt to profit from free contributions while not only getting paid yet applying for patents directly or indirectly through it's funders. As Genode-labs are the ones soliciting contributions the hiatus rests on them and no one else to prove their own integrity first. An integrity that can only be made known by Genode-labs own efforts to assure the QoL of ALL contributors and not just those of an inner university circle that has benefited from the work of countless people. It doesn't take much to implement a digital punch clock and use a distributed cost license.

omap4 gpiomux driver
by Alexander Tarasikov 25 Jan '13

25 Jan '13

Hi, Genode hackers! I'm just letting you know I've written the initial implementation of the GPIO pinmux driver for omap4. So that if someone needs it, you don't have to start from scratch. The driver is in our 'tuna-hacks' branch. Currently, it's quite dirty (even the extra file from u-boot got commited accidentally). Currently you can set alternate functions for pins, pullup/pulldown etc. Just as in linux. What is to be done yet before I'm ready to make a patch against upstream: * mux for WKUP pad. Currently, only CORE partition is supported * convert mux_bits.h to c++ style (add namespaces to avoid conflicts) https://github.com/Ksys-labs/genode/commit/a7d58b18daa562300dd873a802d6962a… I would like to receive the following comments: * does it make sense to make separate MUX drivers for each SoC given how specific they are or do we make it part of the GPIO interface? * how should we go about adding PRCM and clock stuff? -- Regards, Alexander

Nova 32 bits on older Pentium 4 computer.

Well, this old Pentium 4 computer does seems to have an IOAPIC, as seen in the dmesg log: [ 0.015459] Freeing SMP alternatives: 24k freed [ 0.015506] ACPI: Core revision 20120320 [ 0.019020] ftrace: allocating 22322 entries in 44 pages [ 0.031186] Enabling APIC mode: Flat. But I don't understand which code is executed next. Ok... I understand it is not a interesting computer to use Nova on.

8 bits depth framebuffer not working
by Paul Dufresne 24 Jan '13

24 Jan '13

>nitpicker and the other GUI components only support graphics modes with RGB565 colors currently Indeed, trying to use 1024x768 with 8 bits depth I was expecting very ugly colors, but it is worst than that. Although I was able to distinguish Launchpad window, I was not able to interact with it.

[genode] Does order matter?
by jaeyong yoo 23 Jan '13

23 Jan '13

Hello genode! Just out of curiosity, I'm just wondering whether the order of defining RPC calls matter. For instance, GENODE_RPC(Rpc_func_a, void , func_a); GENODE_RPC(Rpc_func_b, void , func_b); GENODE_RPC_INTERFACE( Rpc_func_a, Rpc_func_b); vs. GENODE_RPC(Rpc_func_a, void , func_a); GENODE_RPC(Rpc_func_b, void , func_b); GENODE_RPC_INTERFACE( Rpc_func_b, Rpc_func_a); /* the order of func_a and func_b is reversed */ Do the above two RPC call definitions are equally OK? Best regards, Jaeyong

needed to add some service from CORE in hello_tutorial/run/hello.run
by Paul Dufresne 22 Jan '13

22 Jan '13

Before it works, I had to add these lines: <service name="RM"/> <service name="CPU"/> <service name="IO_PORT"/> <service name="IRQ"/> inside <parent-provides> section of hello.run. I would have tought however that: <default-route> <any-service> <parent/> <any-child/> </any-service> </default-route> would have made it optional, which was not.

[genode] bug report on nic_bridge
by jaeyong yoo 22 Jan '13

22 Jan '13

Hello Genode, I think I found a bug on nic_bridge. Just briefly, nic_bridge uses memcmp to maintain avl_tree for clients, but genode memcmp impl. is not fully c-standard compatible. nic_brdige uses address node which is a avl_tree node that uses Genode::memcmp to determine which node is higher: os/src/server/nic_bridge/address_node.h: bool higher(Address_node *c) { using namespace Genode; return (memcmp(&c->_addr.addr, &_addr.addr, sizeof(_addr.addr)) > 0); } Genode memcmp is not fully c-standard compatible: it only returns 0 or 1. base/include/util/string.h: /** * Compare memory blocks * * \retval 0 memory blocks are equal * \retval 1 memory blocks differ * * NOTE: This function is not fully compatible to the C standard. */ inline int memcmp(const void *p0, const void *p1, size_t size) { char *c0 = (char *)p0; char *c1 = (char *)p1; size_t i; for (i = 0; i < size; i++) if (c0[i] != c1[i]) return 1; return 0; } which makes Address_node avl_tree only grows in one direction (1 side). Once the avl_tree is rebalanced, we never reach to the other side (0 side). best regards, Jaeyong

Scientific groundwork [was] HelenOS kernel (Spartan) as a Genode platform
by John Bessa 21 Jan '13

21 Jan '13

To Paul, Tobias, Stephan, and anyone else who is interested. This is in two parts, my immediate "knee-jerk" reaction to yesterday's comments, and a less-spontaneous 24-hour (philosophic/scientific groundwork) approach to the "paucity of drivers" problem --something that will bedevil any OS or framework! Logic is the bread, water and light of computers and networking; logic, from ancient Greek logos is language and meaning (ie definitions) that evolve as human thought evolves (most agree that we are in a state of de-evolution: good or bad depending whom you ask). If nothing, definition is static (ie a platform is what ~the user~ stands on), but often changes "effect" in context (rather than meaning); this is no more true than "synthesis." Norman specifically mentions Genode as "holistic;" the current word for holistic is "whole systems model"and is absent in most scientific research and society's pseudo-scientific "control structures." (At the moment, I am contemplating how to leverage the domain wholesystemsmodel.org.) The text below was my immediate response last night to the previous email subject thread. I had just finished an apple syrup beverage made from a family of semi-wild apple trees that happen to grow near significant markers for the series of rebellions that eventually led the US Bill of Rights--the template for all human rights. These important places include the iron/charcoal furnace where the revolution was initially plotted, and the modest marker of the last battle of Shays Rebellion, the event that forced the constitution. Shays survived to reach Vermont and help found its namesake university with the Green Mountain Boys. So, life is ripe with meaning where I come from. ===Text from last night=== Userland is people, and people have minds. The way the minds work is very much the way the computers work, but far more advanced with such things as emotional intelligence and related empathic communication This idea that the mind gave the CPU its functionality in its context is actually a given to most because, obviously human minds created the CPUs and OSs with memory and interconnection networks. The journey back from the computer and network back to the mind was remarkable, because it can be modeled by the IP stack far better than any previous explanation. Further, the interrelation between parts of the mind uses co-processing CPUs and networks that we take for granted such that if a CPU or network isn't working, it is the first you notice of the remarkable system. Sadly, if one NEVER knew it didn't work (because it stopped working), one you might never know what that component or connection provides for normal humans. That is the scary part, because civilization finds ways to implement minds that are only partially-working in "synthetic" ways. Sometime in the last decade the "civilization process phenomena" became such that the computer stopped being humanly intelligent, especially with behaviors such as "troll-bashing." The communications network--the Internet--became really, really stupid and violent like TV. If you have read about civilization cycles, then you know that the proper next move is to "get back to basics" which means rolling everything back to the point where it made sense (as from a fully functioning mind) and is not just recent rationale (such as in a partially-functioning mind). For technology, this means "rolling" before Y2K, the point where financial corruption poisoned it with the "tech scandal." For civilization, this means looking closely at the gap between Sophocles and Socrates. ===end of last night's text=== Without doubt, the single most important text on the culture of technology is "Technics and Civilization" by Lewis Mumford. Among things, one finds in it critical inquiry into "false charity," which applies to especially to every Information Society corporation (ie. GSoC). I attempted to cover some of Mumford's gaps with my critical inquiry into the "Occupy" movement of New York last Spring (by leveraging past relationships). In parallel, I designed the "empathy model," which leverages the IP stack, as I mention above, to show an important connection between technology and socio-psychology with respect to collaboration: intelligent emotional communication. Given this was the basis of my undergrad and most of my present work, I am sticking with it --and I hope it helps. Tested run/demo on nova: liquid_fb tried to call an invalid object
by Paul Dufresne 21 Jan '13

21 Jan '13

Just giving a small glitch while trying run/demo on Nova (x86_64). First I am using a 2 day old master.zip file of Genode (because I had github not able finishing getting objects in 56k with git clone). However I have a new git clone of Nova that did work fine. Note 1: Genode seems to get latest version of Nova by a simple git clone without mentioning the revision that it seems to be done for: genode-master/base-nova/Makefile: GIT_URL = git://github.com/IntelLabs/NOVA.git GIT_REV = 16dd65c15dac298dc5b36d636d79fa0110bd5736 ... $(CONTRIB_DIR)/.git: $(VERBOSE)git clone $(GIT_URL) $(CONTRIB_DIR) which seems to ignore GIT_REV First, I tried to make run/hello without the make prepare in base-nova, but I did after, and it finished building, so I did not rebuild. First time I run/demo I hit a problem when clicking on liquid_framebuffer, that do not seems to repeat the next time: [init -> timer] Timer::Timeout_scheduler::Timeout_scheduler(Platform_timer*, Genode::Rpc_entrypoint*): starting timeout scheduler [init -> vesa_drv] int Framebuffer_drv::map_io_mem(Genode::addr_t, Genode::size_t, bool, void**, Genode::addr_t, Genode::Dataspace_capability*): fb mapped to 1000 [init -> vesa_drv] Could not open file "config" [init -> vesa_drv] Could not obtain config file [init -> vesa_drv] Found: VESA BIOS version 2.0 [init -> vesa_drv] OEM: VGABIOS Cirrus extension [init -> vesa_drv] Found: physical frame buffer at 0xfc000000 size: 0x00400000 [init -> vesa_drv] int Framebuffer_drv::map_io_mem(Genode::addr_t, Genode::size_t, bool, void**, Genode::addr_t, Genode::Dataspace_capability*): fb mapped to 400000 [init -> nitpicker] framebuffer is 1024x768@...23...
