debug vs. release
by Daniel Waddington 30 Jan '13

Hi, Does the Genode build system have support for debug vs. release build differentiation? Are there conventions for code-level conditionals? If not, I suggest you the Genode folks might consider adding to the road map. Daniel

[Genode] why do I need to rebuild ports for different platforms? was: buid directory outside ...
by Paul Dufresne 29 Jan '13

29 Jan '13

I said: --- While trying the different 'platforms' (kernels), the build system seems a bit unoptimized. To me, rebuilding libports, ports, gems in each different kernels don't make much sense. I don't expect them to apply patch platform-specifics, only Genode-specifics. So it would make sense to specify two directory on create_builddir: one common for all platforms, and one for the platform. --- Norman replied: That would be cool but it is not possible. Even though those libraries look like being the same for each base platform, they are different. At compile time, those libraries ultimately depend on platform-specific header files (e.g., the kernel's syscall bindings). So a library built for one kernel will typically not work on another kernel because it would try to call kernel functions in wrong ways. In theory, all those kernel-specific things could be encapsulated in a single kernel-specific library with an interface that hides all kernel details. But in practice, this would be extremely difficult and the extra indirection needed for that would certainly imply runtime overheads. In my opinion, the little added value of such a feature does not justify opening a big can of problems. --- Strange. You made me think if I expect libc to be differently compiled for different platforms. I concluded that I don't expect so. In fact I expect everything running above Core, to not be platform-specific, including device drivers. Sure, we don't need to build some drivers if the architecture does not have the coresponing hardware, but that does not means it would be compiled differently. And I definitively *do not* expect libraries to be compiled with specific kernel headers file. I expect libc, device drivers, to call Core the same way, and Core to be compiled in a specific manner for each platform.

Change of session name at runtime
by Ivan Loskutov 29 Jan '13

*I’m trying to implement virtual network between two instances of the L4Linux. Moreover, each L4Linux has access to own ethernet controller. Genode hasn’t support two NIC drivers yet. It not work because each NIC try to use one IRQ and interrupt handler doesn't work correct. It can be solved by remapping PCI interrupts. The interrupt handler was temporarily moved to PCI driver. But it isn’t a good solution. I have used a Nic interface for internal network drivers and I have implemented two drivers, the first driver has implementation Nic server and the second - Nic client. But I need one L4Linux would have two connection to different Nic session. As I understand it cannot be solved in current Genode implementation. For solve it I have made copy of the nic_session headers with announce Nic2 session name. Part of my config: ... <start name="l4linux.1"> <binary name="l4linux-srv"/> <resource name="RAM" quantum="200M"/> <config args="mem=128M console=tty1 console=ttyS0 l4x_rd=rootfs1.cpio.gz l4x_cpus=1 l4x_cpus_map=0"/> <provides> <service name="Nic2"/> </provides> <route> <service name="Input"> <child name="linux.1"/> </service> <service name="Framebuffer"> <child name="linux.1"/> </service> <service name="Nic"> <child name="nic_drv.1"/> </service> <any-service> <parent/> <any-child/> </any-service> </route> </start> <start name="l4linux.2"> <binary name="l4linux-clnt"/> <resource name="RAM" quantum="200M"/> <config args="mem=128M console=tty1 l4x_rd=rootfs2.cpio.gz l4x_cpus=1 l4x_cpus_map=1"/> <route> <service name="Input"> <child name="linux.2"/> </service> <service name="Framebuffer"> <child name="linux.2"/> </service> <service name="Nic"> <child name="nic_drv.2"/> </service> <service name="Nic2"> <child name="l4linux.1"/> </service> <any-service> <parent/> <any-child/> </any-service> </route> </start> ... I think it would be nice to have session name can be changed in the config like binary executable name and session name for connection can be specified at runtime. This may look like: config: <provides> <service name=”Nic2” base_name=”Nic”/></provides> and source: Nic::Connection nic(“Nic2”); Is it possible? Maybe you have another solution?* -- Ivan Loskutov

Thanks for straightening that out. I'm not sure what a troll is so I'm ill placed to say I'm not one :). I also can't say much about the FUD since I didn't get a copy of my email with your reply. I'll take your word for it :). With regards to Genode's approach to patents I have to say that though not patenting any of the research and possibly subsequent work can be seen as commendable it does not guarantee the non patentability of the work through publication (I'd been misled to believe this in the past concerning my work). The actual patentable processes have to be identified and published to make the patent 'public'. I've made the correction for my own work by integrating patentable process identification in the development work flow (and possibly the ide, but that's an auii thing..). I'm guessing that corporations do this allready. Not to be pretentious, though it's a little too late for that at this point, I'd suggest considering doing likewise with your own work. Though I'm not sure what a patent troll is it might address the issue. At least it provides miuch better assurance for a public patent. Hope that clarifies my end. Hope also it clarifies why I am a bit bighty towards the fsf's and consequently the GPL approach since it has left those who have not identified their software's patentable processes open others to privately patent. [!warning: FUD follows] People who usually have the funding and vested interest to do so. :) > ----- Original Message ----- > From: Norman Feske > Sent: 01/25/13 11:28 AM > To: Genode OS Framework Mailing List > Subject: Re: copyrights, patents, IP and integrity. > > Hello, > > I must admit that I was struggling whether to answer your post or not. > It comes with a sense of entitlement that makes me uneasy. Paul, Are you looking to have this work on a microkernel or on top of a microkernel service? If the former and if I understand the microkernel pardigm Evas is said to write to the hardware and would have to be ported to/as a (microkernel) service. A GUI for Genode
by Paul Dufresne 27 Jan '13

27 Jan '13

About a GUI for Genode. That's in the roadmap for the beginning of 2013. So I began to think about it. My first idea was an old idea, very simple. Each visual application (text or graphics) had it's own framebuffer (could be different size for each). When pressing Ctrl-PageUp or Ctrl-PageDown, you go from one to the other in a round-robin way. Each application occupy full-screen. Now I am thinking about it for about half an hour ant it is evolving a bit. First, this is not obvious that you have to use Ctrl-PageUp or Ctrl-PageDown. I suggest to use a small band on the left. Upper-Left would have a Ctrl-PageUp arrow icon. Down-Left would have a Ctrl-PageDown arrow icon. Each click on one of these arrows, change to the next application (fullscreen except the left region, and the still to come right region). Now how do you launch a new application? My first idea was that one of the application was the launcher. Basically, similar the start page of Windows 8: one icon by available applications. Well that's look a bit wrong... why not category icons to the left, and to the right of it, a 'scrollable' list of icons for each application in the category. Now, it is not funny to go around all the applications to find the launcher. I suggest to put the launcher icon in the middle of the left band. So now the launcher is always easy to get. As soon you click the launcher icon, your application disappears and the launcher take all the 'application' space and the launcher arrow become a go back arrow, to return to your application. Now, a notification area seems important. I suggest to use the right part of the screen for it. In it, you only see the number of urgent, normal, information messages. As soon the mouse cursor goes to the right of the screen, the notifyer take all the 'application' area (almost full-screen) and a go-back to your application icon appears to the right of the screen (similar to the launcher). It is very important that there is an inactive margin space between the application area and the left-part and between the application area and the right-part. That way, if there is a scroller in the application to the right, you will not activate the notifyer by mistake. Perhaps, rather than have only the launcher in left-middle, there could also be an opened-application selector icon, for people that do open a lot of windows. Ok, that's basically my suggestion, I am open for comments about it.

About Enlightenment and EFL
by Paul Dufresne 25 Jan '13

25 Jan '13

It looks like Qt is the currently (prefered) GUI library for Genode. I am trying to push it toward EFL with this message. ;-) Ok, frankly, I did not begin to develop any application either with Qt or EFL. I am still kind of searching which GUI libs I should learn. Anyway, what is Enlightenment? It might have come to your knowledge as a X11 window manager that no one use anymore. Well, Enlightenment version 17 was in developement stage, for about 12 years, and it just have been released. Which may have made it out of the radar of most people. This long development period, have made it, elaborate their own GUI libraries: EFL (Enlightenment Fondation Library ... I think). They are quite small, and might better fit for this reason alone Genode. But my interest for it, come mostly from this extract of the website: ------------- Evas is the canvas layer. It is not a drawing library. It is not like OpenGL, Cairo, XRender, GDI, DirectFB etc. It is a scene graph library that retains state of all objects in it. They are created then manipulated until they are no longer needed, at which point they are deleted. This allows the programmer to work in terms that a designer thinks of. It is direct mapping, as opposed to having to convert the concepts into drawing commands in the right order, calculate minimum drawing calls needed to get the job done etc. Evas also handles abstracting the rendering mechanism. With zero changes the same application can move from software to OpenGL rendering, as they all use an abstracted scene graph to describe the world (canvas) to Evas. Evas supports multiple targets, but the most useful are the high-speed software rendering engines and OpenGL (as well as OpenGL-ES 2.0). Evas not only does quality rendering and compositing, but also can scale, rotate and fully 3D transform objects, allowing for sought-after 3D effects in your interfaces. It supplies these abilities in both software and OpenGL rendering, so you are never caught with unexpected loss of features. The software rendering is even fast enough to provide the 3D without any acceleration on devices for simple uses. ------------- I like this idea of not to have to care about the exact rendering. Anyway, for more info, this was taken from: http://www.enlightenment.org/p.php?p=about&l=en As for seeing a bit what it can do, I could suggest to try Bodhi Linux, which is a Linux distribution that use Enlightenment: http://bodhilinux.com/ (not totaly sure it really shows clearly the link with Enlightenment 17).
