Conference "New Directions in Operating Systems" in London
by Norman Feske 03 Nov '14

03 Nov '14

Hello everyone, I was made aware of the following event titled "New Directions in Operating Systems", which takes place on 25 November in London. http://operatingsystems.io The conference is organized by members of the Rump-kernel community. Since Genode is using Rump kernels, e.g., to provide file systems, there is an obvious connection between both projects. I am planning to attend and possibly give a talk. Maybe the conference is of interest to some of you, too? It would be a nice opportunity to catch up. ;-) Cheers Norman -- Dr.-Ing. About privileged instructions on L4android
by li94575 03 Nov '14

Hi All, Can someone tells me how to execute ARM privileged instruction on L4android, such as " MCR, MRC......" I have a piece of code that needs to execute privileged instructions, but I don't want to put it all into the kernel ----Fiasco.OC. I want to know if L4android have any good ways to solve this problem.

ATAPI not working
by Nobody III 02 Nov '14

02 Nov '14

I have been trying to get Genode to run on my computer. It currently can start init but cannot detect my hard drive. I originally tried using the AHCI driver, but that failed, and after some research, I found out that my motherboard lacks acpi support. I then tried using the atapi driver, but it couldn't detect any IDE devices. After looking for atapi usage in some run scripts, I found that libc_block says, "ATAPI driver does not support 64 bit." I am using foc_x86_64, so, unless that information is incorrect/outdated, it explains why no IDE devices were detected. Could someone please add 64-bit support to the ATAPI driver? I would offer to help if I were qualified.

IDE Support
by Nobody III 02 Nov '14

I have been trying to install Genode on my computer, and have been somewhat successful, but when Genode tries to access my hard drive, I get an error that it could not find an AHCI device. After some research, I have found that although my motherboard has SATA II support, it lacks AHCI support. Is there an IDE driver for Genode so I can access my hard drive?

Genode can't find my SATA hard drive
by Nobody III 02 Nov '14

I got Genode to boot after finally finding a way to install Grub legacy. However, when Genode tries to access my hard drive, it gives me an error that says something like "could not find ahci device." Does anyone have any ideas about how to fix this?

grub-install segfaults
by Nobody III 01 Nov '14

01 Nov '14

I used the grub-legacy bootloader, with the same patches used for Genode (grub-0.97-os.8.gz, and it compiles, but it segfaults when I run "sudo /usr/local/sbin/grub-install /dev/sda4 --root-directory=/mnt/sda4". Note that I'm on an amd64 machine, and it seems that Grub Legacy is always 32-bit. I installed all the proper libraries and headers for the 32-bit compilation prior to building. I don't know what's going wrong. Can you try to provide me with an example grub2 menuentry, as well as advice to fix the segfault?

AHCI Doesn't Work
by Nobody III 31 Oct '14

31 Oct '14

I have tested the run script run/ahci (os/run/ahci) on both foc-x86_64 and fiasco-x86. It doesn't work on either platform. In the "Limitations and Known Issues" section of the README, it does mention that it won't work properly on real hardware or on Fiasco.OC, but it also doesn't work on Fiasco in qemu. I would very much like AHCI to work on Fiasco.OC on real hardware. Can someone who understands the problems fix it? (Or teach me enough so I can fix it; note that all my experience with Genode is in configuration, not actual programming, and that I'm not familiar with OS development.)

Segmentation fault in ld.lib.so when using gzread
by Johannes Schlatow 31 Oct '14

31 Oct '14

Hey everyone, I'm using some 3rd party code that depends on zlib. In particular, it uses gzread() in order to read a file. Unfortunately, the corresponding piece of code causes a segfault in ld.lib.so. I narrowed this down to the following minimum example: gzFile gzfile_components = gzopen("test.txt", "rb"); unsigned char buffer[1024*1024]; gzread(gzfile_components, buffer, sizeof(buffer)); As you can see, the buffer is quite large but this the actual (and reasonable) value used in the 3rd party code. As soon as I reduce the size to e.g. 4096, the segfault is gone. The file I used has a size of 293 bytes. I'm using base-linux. I also remember using this code successfully on a different computer with an older version of Genode (14.03). Any ideas/comments on this?

L4Linux on x86_64
by Nobody III 31 Oct '14

31 Oct '14

It seems that L4Linux expects either x86_32 or arm. Would it work to compile the x86_32 version on x86_64? If not, why? What level of multiarch support does Genode have?
