Deployment of upstream library sources
by Roman Iten 09 Feb '15

09 Feb '15

Hi, we need a way to provide upstream library sources (i.e. the "contrib"-directory) in an environment without internet access. In order to make this task reasonably comfortable, I miss three features in the prepare tool: 1. Similar to "make -C ./build ...", "make prepare -C ./build" will download all upstream sources required by the corresponding build.conf file. 2. "make prepare ... --download-script download.sh" won't download anything, but instead creates a script file which can be transferred to a PC connected to the internet. There you can execute the script in order to download the sources. The download directory can then be transferred into the offline environment. 3. "make prepare ... --unpack [/path/to/download_dir]" unpacks the downloaded upstream libraries to the local contrib directory. What do you think? Is something like this possible? Or do you have any other ideas/suggestions? Regards Roman

Running Linux 3.14 as a Genode VM
by Nico Weichbrodt 06 Feb '15

06 Feb '15

Hi, I'm a student at TU Braunschweig and I inherited a Genode project from another student. He used Genode on an i.MX53 Quick Start Board to boot a Linux 2.6.35 kernel (this one: https://github.com/skalk/linux) as a VM with TrustZone support. This works fine. For my task I need a newer kernel, so I'm currently trying to upgrade to kernel 3.14. Since this kernel requires dtbs I modified Genode to load the dtb instead of ATAGs. I had to modify my dtb so the memory layout matches and to set the bootargs. My kernel now boots but hangs very soon at this point: Uncompressing Linux... done, booting the kernel. If I add some debug statements to linux/init/calibrate.c before the pr_info("Calibrating delay loop (skipped) ..."); then those get printed as well, but the "Calibrating..." text is not. I also added a loop at the top of the calibrate_delay() function which just prints an incrementing counter but this loop only prints once and then hangs. Now I have two assumptions: Either the serial driver is hanging or it has something to do with the clocks/timer because the highest time passed number I got was 0.016800-ish. I have not yet replayed the TrustZone commits from Stefan Kalkowski for Linux 2.6.35 but because I set all devices as unsecure inside Genode (genode/repos/base-hw/src/core/include/spec/imx53/trustzone/csu.h) this should not be necessary, right? If you have any pointers/ideas/suggestions for me, this would be very helpful. Cheers, Nico Weichbrodt

sync() not implemented by rumpfs
by a3an 05 Feb '15

05 Feb '15

Hello, while experimenting with rumpfs I noticed that sync() is not supported by rumpfs. I added a sync() call in ../test/libc_ffat/main.cc and executed make run/rump_ext2. I got the following message: [init -> test-libc_vfs] DUMMY sync(): sync called, not implemented I guess, a filesystem not supporting sync() is of greatly reduced value. Has this call been blocked on purpose ? Regards, Adrian Schuur

Error for l4android with Genode 14.11
by li94575 03 Feb '15

03 Feb '15

Hi all, When I run l4android (3.5) with the latest Genode, I got an error, the args for l4android in run script is "mem=512M console=ttys0 l4x_rd=root-lc.gz". Part of log is as follows: [init -> l4android] Main thread running, waiting... [init -> l4android] l4re_global_env:0 [init -> l4android] Main memory size: 512MB unmapping of managed dataspaces not yet supported [init -> l4android] Main memory: virt:20000000 to 3fffffff [524288 KiB] [init -> l4android] Main memory: phys:0x00000000 to 0x20000000, size: 536870912 [init -> l4android] Filling lower ptabs... [init -> l4android] l4x_register_pointer_section: addr = 01000000 size = 5242880 [init -> l4android] text: virt: 1000000 to 14fffff [5120 KiB] [init -> l4android] Cannot determine physical address for dataspace Binary! [init -> l4android] error: failed to get physical address for 1000000. virtual void Genode::Signal_session_component::submit(Genode::signal_context_capability, unsigned int): invalid signal-contex capability virtual void Genode::Pager_activation_base::entry(): Could not resolve pf=3fffff000 ip=1000e88 It seems that the virtual address(0x20000000 ~ 0x3fffffff) has not been mapped to actual physical address. So I compared the L4Linux support library with previous versions, I found the funtion "l4re_ma_alloc" (in ports-foc/src/lib/l4lx/l4_re_c_mem_alloc.cc) has changed, and l4android will use the function for memory allocation. Can somebody tells me why make that adjustment? Is it the reason why l4android produces that error?

Help compiling Genode with other version of Fiasco.OC
by Reinier Millo Sánchez 02 Feb '15

Hi I'm trying to compile Genode using another Fiasco.OC version. I'm using Fiasco.OC from snapshot(2014022815). Part_blk/USB issue
by Nobody III 30 Jan '15

30 Jan '15

I have been experimenting with things related to my issue when using part_blk with ahci, and I have found that it works fine in both QEMU and Virtualbox. However, when I combine part_blk with usb_drv, I encounter what appears to be the exact same problem, but it only occurs on some of the kernels. The scenario works bug-free on okl4 and fiasco, but freezes on foc and nova. Note that other servers such as rump_fs work just fine with the usb driver, so the problem isn't a simple driver failure. I've attached the run script for the usb and part_blk scenario. I hope this helps fix my AHCI issue (which only occurs on real hardware) as well.

Raspberry Pi Prospects and/or Alternative
by Jeroen "Slim" van Gelderen 28 Jan '15

28 Jan '15

Hi, There seems to be Raspberry Pi support in the Genode base-hw kernel. To what extent is this (non)functional? Can someone estimate how much effort it would take to make the NIC work? Alternatively, can someone recommend a similarly priced/specced board that has 20+ GPIO pins and on which Genode supports the NIC? Thanks, -Slim -- Jeroen "Slim" van Gelderen

Ring buffer overflow in fb_sdl
by Tomasz Gajewski 28 Jan '15

28 Jan '15

I was playing a little with demo on linux and I was able to crash fb_sdl process. I could do it only after suspend/resume of linux host and I understand that this process exists more for testing/development purpose but I have more general question about this crash. Crash was due to unhandled Ring_buffer::Overflow exception in: for (;;) input_session.submit(wait_for_event()); What is the proper way to handle such situations? Should it block on submit call? Should submit call be wrapped with try/catch and retried after some time? -- Tomasz Gajewski
