AHCI Driver
by Harm de Vries 08 Oct '15

08 Oct '15

Hello everyone, The error message ``Device does not support native command queuing: abort'' is written repeatedly to the log when I try to read from a SATA disk using the AHCI driver. Is this driver only meant to work with a SATA disk that supports native command queuing (the HBA supports it)? While looking at the code of the driver to determine the cause of the error I noticed that: 1. In ahci.cc en main.cc the word `available' has been misspelt as 'avaiable'. 2. In ahci.h the bitfield that indicates support for native command queuing in the HBA seems to be misspelt as `Sncg'. There is also a function with the name `ncg' and this abbreviation is also used in the function `info'. 3. The struct `Identity' in ahci.h describes the structure of the result of an ATA command. Is there a reason why this struct and the corresponding function `identify_device' are not in the file `ata_driver.h'? Best regards, Harm

Porting Genode to the ZedBoard
by unknown＠example.com 07 Oct '15

07 Oct '15

Hello Genodians, I am trying to port Genode to the ZedBoard, but currently I am having some problems to get the UART online. My starting point is this mail: <http://sourceforge.net/p/genode/mailman/message/33222798/> and as a reference I use the Pandaboard, because it has also a Cortex A9. So is it right, that the board_base.h is in some way like a devicetree file? If this is the case, how can I add some other devices like Ethernet, OLED-Display or the FPGA? Is there some more documentation on how to port Genode to another hardware? To come back to the UART: I hope that I can use the PL011 driver, because the ZedBoard does not have the TL16C750 chip from the Pandaboard (the ZedBoard has a Ti TUSB1210 chip). So is this possible? I think I already have the right base addresses from the technical reference manual, but I am still not getting on how to set the clock and the interrupts. Looking forward to your replies.

Using ARM/Neon fp hardware with libc
by unknown＠example.com 07 Oct '15

07 Oct '15

Hi all, I'm exploring compiling a couple of targets in my Genode, base-hw system to use the hardware fp in the Neon coprocessor on an ARM Cortex A8 SOC, to get some performance improvement. I can add the CC_OPT line containing -mfloat-abi=hard and -mfu=neon-vfpv4 to appropreate target.mk. That should result in the Neon fp unit being called to perform the calculations. If I want use libc math functions I assume I must recompile libc with the same compile options added. Are there build variables that allow me to do that to the libc library? I'm currently building on Genode 15.02. Thanks for any info. Bob Stewart Sent from my android device.

Genode on Muen issues
by Lonnie Cumberland 07 Oct '15

07 Oct '15

Hi All, Today, I am investigating the use of Genode on Muen as that sounds like a very interesting project in the separations kernel arena. With this in mind, I have started by looking at the: genode/repos/base-hw/doc/x86_64_muen.txt In that document, it says to start by getting the muen repository git clone http://git.codelabs.ch/git/muen.git I started that seem to have gotten most of the repository but the muen.git calls for another git clone: ------------------------------------------------- lonnie@...355...:~$ git clone --recursive http://git.codelabs.ch/git/muen.git Cloning into 'muen'... Checking connectivity... done. Submodule 'components/linux/src' (http://git.codelabs.ch/git/muen/linux.git) registered for path 'components/linux/src' Cloning into 'components/linux/src'... --------------------------------------------------- this is where it seems to hang. I am wondering if anyone else has run across this and, if so, then what was your solution? I want to play around with muen a bit, but would wonder if it might, eventually be possible to get virtualbox/genode/muen working since from what I have read on muen, that it still needs a bit of work to support other VM's beyond the simple xv6 VM which apparently was modified to make work (if I understand what was said in the Auguse 29, 2013 muen-report pdf document. Any ideas on this? Kind Regards and have a great day, Lonnie

Announcement: Genode OS Framework version 15.08 released
by Christian Helmuth 06 Oct '15

06 Oct '15

The current release is characterized by our efforts to use Genode as day-to-day operating system. From this background, we packed quite a few improvements regarding user GUI experience, VirtualBox robustness and performance, integration of native Genode applications and guest OSes as well as tools to inspect the system behavior into Genode 15.08. Beyond that, we're proud to integrate community contributions as the support to run Genode base-hw on the Muen separation kernel on x86_64 and extended device-driver support for Raspberry Pi and Odroid-X2. In short, version 15.08 comes with the following highlights: - Genode/NOVA used as day-to-day operating system - Genode on top of the Muen separation kernel - Kernel-resource management on NOVA and our custom base-hw kernel - Base framework and low-level OS infrastructure - Improved audio support - Unified networking components - Enhanced tracing and file-system facilities - Low-complexity software rendering - Device drivers - Raspberry Pi and Odroid-X2 on Fiasco.OC, including USB support - BCM57cxx network cards - VirtualBox - Guest-host integration (policy-based mouse shapes, dynamic adaptation to screen size changes, audio) - Multi-processor support Those and many more improvements are illustrated by the release documentation http://genode.org/documentation/release-notes/15.08 Best regards -- Christian Helmuth Genode Labs http://www.genode-labs.com/ · http://genode.org/ https://twitter.com/GenodeLabs · /ˈdʒiː.nəʊd/ Genode Labs GmbH · Amtsgericht Dresden · HRB 28424 · Sitz Dresden Geschäftsführer: Dr.-Ing. Hello All, I hope that everyone's week is starting off well. I am currently working on getting VirtualBox/Genode/NOVA compiled up and am trying to "prepare_port libc" but have found that the http://svn.freebsd.org/base/release/8.2.0/lib/libc seems to be unstable and times out a lot while trying to download the library. Is there an alternate location that I can get the libc library from? Kind Regards and have a great day, Lonnie :)

[genode] base-hw: SMP support on I.MX6
by Le Guan 05 Oct '15

05 Oct '15

Hello everyone, I wonder if the current release supports SMP in base-hw. I read from the genode book that base-hw has well supported SMP long time ago. But the default configure in wandBoard sets NR_OF_CPUS to 1. When I change that value to 4 and implement several auxiliary SMP functions and run the program, there seems to be some error happen. Below is the output: core 0 enabled kernel initialized core 1 enabled core 2 enabled core 3 enabled Genode 15.08-25-g5cf8c49 <local changes> int main(): --- create local services --- int main(): --- start init --- The booting is stuck here. I have implemented the corresponding Cpu::start_secondary_cpus, Cpu::primary_id() and Cpu::executing_id(). What else should I implement to boot SMP? Thanks in advance! Best regards, Le Guan

exploring Mesa in Genode
by Jamey Sharp 03 Oct '15

03 Oct '15

Good day all! By way of introduction: I learned about Genode because of the recent release's experimental support for seL4. Then I noticed that one of the open challenges is to implement a better architecture for direct-rendered 3D. I've been hacking on X for years and wanting to play with 3D on a microkernel, so now I'm trying to figure out what it'd take to tackle the Mesa rework challenge. As a first step, I had trouble following the "getting started" directions. I've filed/commented on GitHub issues for code related things. In the web site documentation, you might mention that you're relying on SDL version 1.2, not the current version 2.0 (in Debian, libsdl1.2-dev). And to get the isohybrid tool I needed the Debian package named syslinux-utils. http://genode.org/documentation/developer-resources/getting_started Now that I can run the linux_x86 and okl4_x86 demos, what steps would you recommend for trying to prototype a multi-process 3D infrastructure? Jamey

Procedure to build and run virtualbox/genode/nova
by Lonnie Cumberland 02 Oct '15

02 Oct '15

Greetings All, Let me first say that I really like the Genode-Foundations 15.05 manual and have worked thorugh the first part through section 2.4 which ends with making NOVA and booting it with the Demo I know that this question has been asked but searching back through the mailing list archives, I cannot seem to locate a clear procedure to set up and run virtualbox under genode under nova. In one mailing list discussion it said to go into the $ cd <genode>/repos/ports $ run/virtualbox and then with a test.iso (tinycore_x86_64.iso) in bin (assuming <genode>/build/nova_x86_64) Perhaps I am missing something, but this did not work? Is there any documentation on the website that I might be able to look at to get an idea? Sorry for the simple questions (in the learning curve now for Genode) as I am trying to get a good understanding of Genode and how it operates as I think that it will be very good for the project that I am working on at the moment. Kind Regards and have a great day, Lonnie
