ARM TrustZone Shared Memory Crossworld
by Stefan Brenner 10 Dec '15

10 Dec '15

Hi, currently we're working with the TrustZone VMM example from Genode based on Genode 15.05 on i.MX53 QSB. We have a shared buffer in normal world, which we want to use for cross-world communication. Currently the buffer is allocated using mmap MAP_SHARED | MAP_ANON. We're having strange issues/problems/inconsistencies when accessing the memory range in Genode (secure world) after normal world has written to it. We read that uncached memory should be used for this, or the cache lines have to be flushed/invalidated. However, apparently we can't get either of these options working. So our questions as follows: 1) We use mmap(NULL, <size>, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_SHARED|MAP_ANON, -1, 0) to allocate the buffer in normal world (Linux). Is there a better way to allocate uncached memory? 2) We've tried __cpuc_flush_user_all(), __cpuc_flush_kern_all() in order to invalidate all cache lines (later maybe only the affected cache lines once this works in general). Is this correct, to do this in normal world (i.e. Linux)? 3) At the moment we assume that Genode doesn't have to invalidate/flush its cache lines because as it is the VMM it should be aware of the fact that the cache might be stale. Any help is appreciated. A short hint: Currently our idea is to send an hypercall to the Genode VMM after Linux has written to the buffer, so Genode will pretty quickly access the memory after it has been written to from Linux. Turmvilla Memory
by Harm de Vries 09 Dec '15

Hello all, Today I tried to run the latest Turmvilla configuration on a Lenovo X250 laptop (Nova 64bit kernel). However, although the machine has 16GB of of memory only 1942MB is transferred to init, see the log below. Does anyone have an idea what could cause this behaviour? Article about the new TrustZone demo on the USB Armory
by Martin Stein 09 Dec '15

09 Dec '15

Hello everyone, as already announced, Genode's recent release 15.11 contains enhanced TrustZone support on the USB Armory board using our custom base-hw kernel. Due to the many-sided and perceptive story behind this improvement, we decided to provide a dedicated article. Besides telling our story, the article also illustrates how the new TrustZone demo on the USB Armory works and how you can easily bring it to your own USB Armory. If you are interested in this topic, you may read the article at: http://genode.org/documentation/articles/usb_armory I hope you enjoy it and may even find it helpful.

Qt 5.5 basic support
by Reinier Millo Sánchez 08 Dec '15

08 Dec '15

Hi Genode Comunity We want to share our basic support of QT 5.5 on GenodeOS. The on going development is in our GenodeOS fork at Github: https://github.com/xeos-team/genode/tree/qt5_5 We worked to support the basic elements of Qt, based on the support of Qt 5.1. This work is not finished yet, but it can be used by the community. Based on the support of Qt 5.1 we have reorganized a bit the Qt modules, acording the modules on Qt 5.5. This is the list of the components supported and a list of examples of Qt that we have tested on GenodeOS: * Qt Core o qt5_core_contiguouscache.run o qt5_core_savegame.run o qt5_core_semaphores.run o qt5_core_waitconditions.run * Qt Gui o qt5_gui_analogclock.run o qt5_gui_openglwindow.run o qt5_gui_rasterwindow.run * Qt Widgets o qt5_widgets_animatedtiles.run o qt5_widgets_appchooser.run o qt5_widgets_calculator.run o qt5_widgets_chart.run o qt5_widgets_digitalclock.run o qt5_widgets_dynamiclayouts.run o qt5_widgets_elasticnodes.run o qt5_widgets_lighting.run o qt5_widgets_mainwindow.run o qt5_widgets_moveblocks.run o qt5_widgets_pathstroke.run o qt5_widgets_puzzle.run o qt5_widgets_sliders.run o qt5_widgets_standarddialogs.run o qt5_widgets_stickman.run o qt5_widgets_tetrix.run o qt5_widgets_textedit.run o qt5_widgets_trafficlight.run o qt5_widgets_undo.run * Qt Network o qt5_network_dnslookup.run o qt5_network_fortuneserver.run o qt5_network_threadedfortuneserver.run o * Qt Websockets o qt5_websockets_echoserver.run o qt5_websockets_simplechat.run * Qt Xml o qt5_xml_dombookmarks.run o qt5_xml_htmlinfo.run o qt5_xml_xmlstreamlint.run At this point we are having some troubles in the support. In some examples, we are getting this message when the Qt application finished Genode::Signal_session_component::submit(Genode::Signal_context_capability, unsigned int)::<lambda(Genode::Signal_context_component*)>: invalid signal-context capability On the XML module, there is a little problem, I think that Qt isn't recognizing the EOF in the XMLs files. Have tested it and it parse the XML file but fails at EOF. I'm reviewing this trying to fix it on Qt or the libc integration with Qt. The UDP sockets are not working on GenodeOS yet. We are planning continue working on the other Qt modules. If someone have any suggestion to our support problems, or is interested to help us in the support of Qt 5.5 is welcome. Best regards -- Lic. Hi everyone, I am running a simple "tz_vmm" example in Genode on imx53 qsb. I have Noux application which runs on top of Noux runtime inside the secure world. I wanted to access this Noux applications inside tz_vmm application, calling a function of Noux application from tz_vmm code. But i have no idea how to do that. Could anyone please give me some hint? Thanks and best regards, Joseph

Reminder: Microkernel-devroom CfP deadline is on this Sunday
by Jakub Jermar 07 Dec '15

07 Dec '15

Hi folks, the CfP deadline for the Microkernel devroom at FOSDEM 2016 is due this Sunday. See the original CfP [1] for information on what to do if you would like to give a talk about some microkernel-related topic. At the same time, I would like to encourage you to submit a talk proposal. It would be shame not to let the wider microkernel community know about the latest and greatest developments in your project. Lastly, please forward this reminder to whoever you think may want to give a talk in the devroom and is not among the recipients of this message. Thanks, Jakub [1] http://trac.helenos.org/wiki/Devroom2016

Porting Genode to Raspberry Pi 2
by Tamas Bakos 03 Dec '15

03 Dec '15

Hello everyone, I would like to port Genode to the Raspberry Pi 2, using the custom kernel from base-hw. I know it is already available for the Raspberry Pi 1, but model 2 uses an entirely different CPU (ARM Cortex-A7), from a different family (ARMv7-A). I am not very familiar with the structure of the Genode source files yet. Could you help me, by explaining what files I should create or modify, and which files I should take as reference when doing so?(Should I start based on the files of a board using a CPU from the same family (ARMv7-A), or from the files concerning the Raspberry Pi 1?) Thanks,Tamas

Thoughts about a new live system
by Norman Feske 02 Dec '15

02 Dec '15

Hello, shortly after almost every Genode release, I see people wondering why we have not released a new live system since many years. There are even a few who conclude that the project is not going to get anywhere because there is no easy way to try it out. Because this topic is brought up every now and then, I'd like to share my opinion about it: https://github.com/genodelabs/genode/issues/1000#issuecomment-161260312 I hope that you find my line of thoughts reasonable. If you have ideas or thoughts to add, please don't hesitate to share them. Cheers Norman -- Dr.-Ing.
