vbox_usb_run bin/nic_drv missing
by a3an 23 Dec '15

23 Dec '15

Hi, I am using the vbox_usb_run script from Alexander Boettcher to create a VirtualBox/win7 image on a usb stick. At the end of "make -C build/nova_x86_64 run/vbox_usb" I get a nessage suggesting that bin/drv_nic cannot be found. I am sure to have missed a make prepare run of something, I cannot find out what. Could you give me a hint ? Thanks, Adrian Schuur adrian@...376...:~/test/usb/genode-vbox_usb_run$ make -C build/nova_x86_64 run/vbox_usb make: Entering directory `/home/adrian/test/usb/genode-vbox_usb_run/build/nova_x86_64' including /home/adrian/test/usb/genode-vbox_usb_run/tool/run/boot_dir/nova including /home/adrian/test/usb/genode-vbox_usb_run/tool/run/image/disk including /home/adrian/test/usb/genode-vbox_usb_run/repos/ports/run/vbox_usb.run building targets: server/input_merger drivers/nic drivers/audio server/nitpicker app/vbox_pointer server/nit_fb server/report_rom core init virtualbox server/part_blk server/rump_fs drivers/ahci drivers/framebuffer drivers/timer drivers/input drivers/usb drivers/rtc drivers/platform drivers/acpi server/report_rom drivers/platform/x86/device_pd spawn make server/input_merger drivers/nic drivers/audio server/nitpicker app/vbox_pointer server/nit_fb server/report_rom core init virtualbox server/part_blk server/rump_fs drivers/ahci drivers/framebuffer drivers/timer drivers/input drivers/usb drivers/rtc drivers/platform drivers/acpi server/report_rom drivers/platform/x86/device_pd make[1]: Entering directory `/home/adrian/test/usb/genode-vbox_usb_run/build/nova_x86_64' Makefile:115: target `server/report_rom' given more than once in the same rule. checking library dependencies... Dataspace Allocation Size and Quota
by Georg Guba 22 Dec '15

22 Dec '15

Hi all, I'm trying to allocate a dataspace dynamically at runtime and transfer quota accordingly. However, it seems the allocation always requires more quota than the actual allocation size. E.g. Genode::Ram_connection ram; ram.ref_account(Genode::env()->ram_session_cap()); Genode::Ram_dataspace_capability ds; Genode::env()->ram_session()->transfer_quota(ram.cap(), 32*1024); PDBG("Quota: %d/%d\n", ram.used(), ram.quota()); ds = ram.alloc(28*1024); PDBG("Quota: %d/%d\n", ram.used(), ram.quota()); This shows 0/32769 on the first print and 28672/32769 on the second which is exactly what you'd expect. Allocating 29 KiB with a 32 KiB quota, however, will throw a Quota_exceeded exception, still printing 0/32769 on the first print. It seems you need about 4 KiB of spare quota but I can't seem to find any doc on this. How much quota should I actually reserve for simple allocations like this and why isn't it simply the same as the actual allocation size? I'd like to avoid magic numbers and wasteful allocation if possible. Cheers, Georg

grsecurity R.I.P.
by Jyri Hovila [Turvamies.fi] 22 Dec '15

22 Dec '15

Dear everyone, perhaps someone has already brought this up on the list, but I'll dig it a bit anyways. As I'm sure many of the people on the list are already aware, grsecurity has gone closed source with their stable branch. While grsecurity is far from dead, the fact that the stable version is now only available to paying customers does change the scene somewhat. It also reminds us that open source does not guarantee endless availability. Despite all the great innovations the grsecurity team has come up with, the "solution" of having to (individually) patch each and every new kernel version was never a real solution anyways. What I would personally love to see is Linux kernel running on/in Genode. I know it's very different from running a micro kernel, and I know it would require lots of work - but then again, the past situation with grsecurity (and other tweaks) required hell of a lot of work anyways. I'm actually working on a little thingy based on OpenBSD, and would be interested in leading a task force with the goal of making both BSD and Linux kernels run on Genode. If any similar minded individuals are listening in, please give me a shout! Yours, Jyri -- +358-50-5632104 (24/7) jyri.hovila@...377...

tz_vmm demo on USB Armory
by John David 21 Dec '15

21 Dec '15

Hello, I run tz_vmm demo on USB Armory as described in this Article <http://genode.org/documentation/articles/usb_armory> it displays log messages (see on the attached ) and hangs. The tz_vmm start the virtual machine (Linux) but I couldn't get a Linux shell to run Linux commands so i have no chance to access the root file system on the SD_card (non-secure). it could be a ridiculous question but please tell me what is missing? Thanks, John

Node.js
by Emery 18 Dec '15

18 Dec '15

Hello list, I am working on porting libuv right now, which is the event loop backend for Node.js, though I need libuv for different project. I had looked a little into porting Node, but after using the language I am less than ethusiastic about it. However, if there someone else who is interested in coordinating on a Node port then now would be a good time. The V8 javascript engine looks like it may be less effort than libuv, with that and libuv out of the way Node may not be too difficult. Cheers, Emery

[Fiasco.OC][Genode] Creating an unstripped image file
by Nourhan Mohamed 17 Dec '15

17 Dec '15

Dear all, I was wondering if there was an option to create an unstripped image from my application over fiasco.oc kernel. I am starting to use Genode platform and was trying to follow the hello app tutorial defined in the Genode Operating System Framework 15.05 manual and trying to run it using Qemu but need to enable the debug symbols to be able to debug why the app doesn't load successfully on Qemu using gdb. Thanks, Nourhan

Upgrade to 15.11 from 15.02 results in quota exceded message
by Bob Stewart 12 Dec '15

12 Dec '15

Hi, I just upgraded from 15.02 to 15.11 and ran my base-hw based os and applications, which have been running for some time on 15.02. The changes made during the update were to the directory structure required by the "platform" changes and gpio driver changes to accomodate the removal of the wait_for_irq method. immediately after init starts I get a "quota execeeded"mesage: Starting kernel ... kernel initialized Genode 15.11 <local changes> int main(): --- create local services --- int main(): --- start init --- int main(): transferred 501 MB to init int main(): --- init created, waiting for exit condition --- Quota exceeded! amount=12288, size=12288, consumed=12288 [init -> uart_drv] int main(int, char**): --- OMAP3 UART driver started --- [init -> ctrl_module] --- Beaglebone Control Module Server --- [init -> platform_drv] --- bbb platform driver running --- [init -> pwm_drv] --- am33xx pwm driver --- . , , No changes have been made to available ram constants in board_base so I'm confused as to what caused this message to be generated. Did I miss a change to how quota's are requested and managed? Any help would be greatly appreciated Bob

RSA key pair generation in tz_vmm
by Jaemin Park 11 Dec '15

11 Dec '15

Dear, I'm currently modifying tz_vmm to use openssl (librcrypto) to generate RSA key pair on i.mx53 QSB. (That is, RSA key pair is generated inside the Secure World.) Whenever I try to execute the following code, the error occurs. The source code in tz_vmm (main.cc) =========================================================== /* key pair generation */ int generate_keypair(){ int keylen; char *pem_key; BIGNUM *e=NULL; keypair = RSA_new(); e = BN_new(); BN_set_word(e, 65537); if (!RSA_generate_key_ex(keypair, 2048, e, NULL)) PERR("failed to generate key pair"); /* the big number is no longer used */ BN_free(e); e = NULL; /* To get the C-string PEM form: */ BIO *pub = BIO_new(BIO_s_mem()); PEM_write_bio_RSAPublicKey(pub, keypair); keylen = BIO_pending(pub); pem_key = (char*)malloc(keylen+1); BIO_read(pub, pem_key, keylen); pem_key[keylen+1] = '\0'; BIO_free_all(pub); return keylen; } The error code (imx53 QSB) ============================================================ [init -> tz_vmm] read_rtc: rtc not configured, returning 0 [init -> tz_vmm] no plugin found for fcntl(2) [init -> tz_vmm] no plugin found for write(2) [init -> tz_vmm] failed to generate key pair What should I do to fix up this error? Any comment is welcome. I'm looking forward to your kind response. My Best Regards, Jaemin Park

Debugging Genode applications on Ubuntu 14.04 64bit
by Menno Valkema 11 Dec '15

11 Dec '15

Hi Everyone, While developing applications for Genode I sometimes run into bugs and issues where a debugger would be of great help to figure out what I'm doing wrong. Reading Genode Foundations section 4.7.2 the GDB monitor approach seems to be exactly what I'm looking for. So when I try the gdb_monitor build-process as described at http://genode.org/documentation/developer-resources/gdb I get the following error message: $ make app/gdb_monitor checking library dependencies... Library-description file gdbserver_platform.mk is missing Digging a little deeper it seems I do have this file, however it's not available for my platform (Ubuntu Linux 14.04 64bit). Searching the web for this issue I find a post from May 2014 (http://sourceforge.net/p/genode/mailman/message/32372505/) which seems to be the issue I'm running into. The proposed solution is to use 32bit Linux. What I could do is setup a VM with 32bit Linux and do my debugging here. However I prefer doing my debugging at my workstation natively without switching to a VM whenever I run into an issue. So I wondered whether there is any way to do my gdb debugging on a 64bit workstation. Did I miss a source which explains how to do things on a 64bit system? Is a gdb_monitor for 64bit Linux on it's way? Would there be any way to use the gdb-monitor for 32bit Linux on my 64bit system? Is there another system in place for 64bit debugging? Any help would be appreciated. Kind regards, Menno

i.mx53qsb and ARM Trustzone Techology
by Joseph Lee 10 Dec '15

10 Dec '15

Hi >From the article in this link http://genode.org/documentation/articles/trustzone , I understood that the DDR RAM in i.mx53 QSB is partitioned off between normal world and secure world. I just want to read a file in the normal world from application running in the secure side. Is there any possibility to get access to any file in normal world from the secure world? thanks for your help in advance. Regards, Joseph
