Leitzentrale only displays NVME1
by Jack Curran 28 Jun '24

28 Jun '24

Hello, I have 4 NVME SSD's in my laptop. However, the Leitzentrale only allows shows me the NVME1 slot, but it will not display NVME2, NVME3 or NVME4 to select. I wanted to use a SSD that was in the 4 slot, so I physically had to swap the SSD in slot 4 with slot 1 with so I could select the desired SSD for sculptOS to format and use on the NVME1 slot. I am not sure if this is just a GUI bug, or if the other 3 NVME SSD's are simply not being detected by the OS? Thank you.

Using second block device
by mntn 21 Jun '24

21 Jun '24

I am testing out Genode Sculpt on a spare x86 machine and I ran into a question that doesn't seem to have a clear answer in the documentation. I am attempting to create the following setup: * All Genode/Sculpt software on removable USB boot drive * All virtual machine data on encrypted volume stored on NVMe From my experimentation, the default applications in the Leitzentrale seem to be focused around a single block device, the one you select for the depot with "use". Since I have the depot on USB, I'm unable to create a file vault residing on the NVMe. To accomplish this setup, I'd imagine that I will need to create a file vault on the NVMe storage, then create the VM using the file vault to hold the file system. Unless I'm missing an easier solution, it seems like I may need to create a modified version of the file vault than can reside on partitions from other block devices... but before I proceed too far down that path I'd appreciate any feedback/ideas from someone with experience. Thanks!

Difficulty with nvme driver in Sculpt 24.04
by Colin Parker 20 Jun '24

20 Jun '24

Hello Genodians, It's been a while, but I decided to try out Sculpt 24.04. I have mostly good news: the ps2 issue I mentioned last time seems to be resolved, thanks for that. The system boots up nicely and looks to have a lot of cool features. However, I can't get the nvme driver to work. It reads the partition table, but following any access to a partition, the platform_drv component fails with the message: Error: Uncaught exception of type 'Genode::Final_table<Intel::Level_1_descriptor<12u> >::Double_insertion' So I am able to trace this a little, the exception is thrown within Driver::Session_component::alloc_dma_buffer(unsigned long, Genode::Cache), specifically within Genode::Registry<Driver::Io_mmu_domain>::for_each<...>(...), so I assume this is related to IO_mmu in some way. If it helps, the address it attempts to allocate is 0x800000 with size 0x400000. Interestingly an exception is thrown twice when attempting to allocate that region, the first time on startup. In that case, based on the log this is probably happening when the nvme partition table is read. However, this exception is not fatal, because it's of type Genode::Out_of_ram. The second time is when trying to use a partition and the exception is Double_insertion. One theory is that, prior to the first exception, the page table in IO_mmu gets partially filled, but the allocator ignores that this happened due to the exception. So, when another request is made, the table is partially full, although the allocator thinks it's a free region. I considered giving more RAM to various components (platform_drv and nvme), but that didn't help, and no component appears to be actually close to its limit. The next step in my debugging would be to try to figure out where/why the Out_of_ram is thrown. I suppose that this is in a higher level page allocator during allocation of space for a lower level page table? But, why isn't this fixed by increasing the quota? I'm curious if anyone here can offer insights. Best regards, CP

Request for help with PinePhone image
by Arnott Chu 12 Jun '24

12 Jun '24

Hello to you all. I'm writing for some help with using the mobile version of Sculpt OS. For context, I've expanded the partition on the SD card and have selected "Use" on the partition. I've connected to my WiFi and can see an IP address. However, I can't use any presets; the button is greyed out. Whenever I try to add https://depot.genode.org/genodelabs or any other depot in the "Add" section it says "missing public key for verification". I have assumed that is what I'm supposed to do since the PC image has a list of similar URLs under an "Update" section under "System". I'm not sure how else to interact with Sculpt OS without a file viewer or the system shell to see what's going on. I also can't see anything under the "Options" button, although it is not greyed out. I should note that I don't have the modem turned on nor do I have a SIM card inserted. Thanks for your time. —Arnott Chu

Status of Sculpt on MNT Pocket Reform
by mntn 12 Jun '24

12 Jun '24

Hi all, I am interested in trying Sculpt on the MNT Pocket Reform. I suspect that the build for the MNT Reform may be adequate for this since it uses the same i.MX8M processor module used by the original Reform. The most obvious differences to me are the change in resolution (1920×1200 versus 1920x1080 on the original Reform), and the RP2040 system/keyboard controller. There may also be other differences in the components on the system board, but the Pocket Reform documentation is still in a rough state, and as an electronics novice I had a hard time parsing the relevant differences. Has anyone tested this out yet? I am happy to try when I receive my Pocket Reform.

Installing scultp on ssd
by Patrick Marchand 30 May '24

Hello, Whats the best way to install sculptos on the ssd? I managed to install it on the usb disk and extend it to take the whole stick, but I'd like to get it directly on the laptop's drive as well and I havent seen an obvious way to do it, but it probably is. (I asked this question on irc but then had computer problems and lost the log so no idea if anybody answered me). Thank you -- Patrick Marchand

Announcement: Genode OS Framework version 24.05 released
by Christian Helmuth 30 May '24

30 May '24

With the tailwind of the Sculpt 24.04 release, we released Genode 24.05 today and I'd like to emphasize the following highlights. First, Sculpt OS can now be run on our custom microkernel (base-hw), which is a landmark on the road to root our entire software stack in a foundation devoid of third-party code in sensitive components. Next, the new ability of seamlessly using the GNU debugger on top of Sculpt OS should find a ready welcome under developers addressing Genode as a runtime. The flexible assignment of USB devices to components and virtual machines is one of many usability advances, beside accessible suspend-resume support on PC hardware. Genode 24.05 in summary: - Sculpt OS running on Genode's custom microkernel - Fine-grained and dynamic assignment of USB devices/interfaces - On-target debugging on Sculpt OS using GDB - Suspend/resume for PC platforms - Completed transition to new audio interfaces - Intel graphics enabled for high-resolution displays - Mesa updated to version 24.0.1 - Improved VirtualBox network throughput - USB pass-through to the Seoul VMM - Revisited storage-encryption infrastructure - Goa SDK updated for Sculpt OS 24.04 - Annual update of the "Genode Foundations" book Detailed release documentation for the version 24.05: https://genode.org/documentation/release-notes/24.05 Best regards and have fun Christian -- Christian Helmuth Genode Labs https://www.genode-labs.com/ · https://genode.org/ https://twitter.com/GenodeLabs · https://genodians.org/ Genode Labs GmbH · Amtsgericht Dresden · HRB 28424 · Sitz Dresden Geschäftsführer: Dr.-Ing. Virtualization Help
by John J. Karcher 29 May '24

29 May '24

I'm so close that I can taste it... I set up launchers for a couple of my existing VirtualBox VMs, including giving each its own vm_fs. I also converted my disk files from dynamic to fixed. The window opens up, but the contents stay black, and the following items are put in the log: [runtime -> vbox_labyrinth -> vbox] Error: ioctl operation=33 [runtime -> vbox_labyrinth -> vbox] Error: void ioctl(SUPCALLVMMR0&) called (/data/depot/genodelabs/src/vbox6/2024-04-11/src/virtualbox6/sup.cc:666), not implemented, eip=0x1a46715 My only guess is that something about the way I've configured the VM triggers this, but I haven't been able to dig deeper. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I then tried to use Seoul, but my ignorance got in the way of this one. How do I configure the "vdi_block" component to point to my disk file (not named "block.vdi")? Thanks in advance for any advice! Happy Sculpting! -- John J. Karcher devuser(a)alternateapproach.com

Network Card Detection on x86_64
by hamed_khandagh＠yahoo.com 28 May '24

28 May '24

Hi I am currently evaluating the ping_nic_router application, along with similar networking programs, for establishing network connectivity on x86_64 hardware. My primary network interface card (NIC) is an R8169 model, which none of the existing programs are able to detect. However, upon integrating an Intel e1000 NIC, the connection was successfully established. Furthermore, the Sculpt operating system is able to interface correctly with both NICs and establish communication with the external network without any issues. Despite thorough comparison, I have been unable to identify any significant differences between the Sculpt operating system's networking functionality and the ping_nic_router application. I am uncertain whether I am overlooking a particular detail or if there is a requirement to modify the source code to accommodate the r8169 NIC. Thank you for your assistance. Best regards, Hamed
