Incremental checkpointing of components

Dear Genode-main readers, I am working on my thesis to implement a real-time capable checkpoint/restore mechanism in Genode/L4-Fiasco.OC on the Chair of Operating Systems, TUM Department of Informatics. A checkpoint-component A has to transparently (more or less) store the internal state of another component B and restore it on another machine also running Genode. One aspect of the thesis is to store the (virtual) memory pages of B only if they were changed since the last checkpoint (known as "incremental checkpointing"). This means, I have to mark a page if it was used by a write access and unmark it after the checkpoint. This approach is similar to the dirty-bit mechanism in the MMU. By searching the genode-main mailing list I found an idea for emulating the dirty-bit mechanism. In the message [1], the author suggests the use of managed dataspaces and a custom RAM service. The RAM server detaches a dataspace which a client is using, re-attaches and marks the dataspace when the client wants to read it or write to it. Thus, the server of the RAM service notices whenever a client uses a specific dataspace. I want to be notified when a virtual memory page is changed and store only this page. But using one RM session per 4 KiB dataspace (typical page size) is not efficient, because an RM session uses 64 KiB for itself. * Do I understand this approach correctly? * Is there another way to be notified when a virtual memory page is accessed? * If not, is it possible to extend the core with this mechanism. Using dataspaces and allocators

Hello Genode-main readers, I am a quite new Genode user and I have a problem of how to use dataspaces. I understand that a dataspace represents a contiguous physical memory space. And that every component can use it, if it has a capability to it (by attaching it to its RM session). But, (1) how is a dataspace typically populated with data and (2) how can a component typically read the data? A further, related question is, (3) what is an allocator, and (4) what is the difference between an allocator and a dataspace? (5) How is an allocator (e.g. in the form of a sliced_heap or heap) typically used in C++? I would be happy about some code snippets or further links, which can answer my questions. I would be satisfied, if someone can answer question (1) and (2) :) Kind regards Denis

Hello all I try to upgrade gtest, that Roman Iten had ported some time ago, to the latest version, as I also need gmock. Child component creation

Hello, I am looking for information on how to develop a parent component which creates new children (just the basics). I read the first 3 chapters of the Genode book which gave me the theoretical information, but I could not find the practical information/tutorials on how to create a child component. Is there a good example in the source code of genode? Best regards Denis

Hello Genode world, I'm having this issue when trying to launch linux virtual machine in the Heeselicht scenario. Genode/Linux USB Application

Hi, I wrote an Genode application for the Pololu Maestro Mini Servo Controller in Genode (https://github.com/702nados/genode-pololuServoController). I'm using the usb_drv (dde_linux) and the usb_terminal (pl2303) for read and write commands. It runs flawlessly on PandaBoard (foc_panda). Next, I want to use it with Linux as kernel (linux_x86). If I try to run the resulting application, the usb_drv component throws the following error: > no route to service "Platform" So, is it possible to compile and run the intended application without modifications? If I want to use the linux devices (e.g. usb), who can I achieve this in code? Turmvilla 16.05 on Lenovo x250

Hi everyone, This weekend I tried to upgrade my Lenovo x250 Turmvilla system to Genode 16.05 using Norman’s turmvilla-16.05 topic branch. I built the turmvilla.run script as is, without modifications. In contrary to the turmvilla-16.02 branch, I do encounter some problems with turmvilla-16.05. During bootup the system stalls displaying the “Copying xxx bytes” messages. The log is inserted below. I see a lot of similarities with parfito’s HP logs for the Heeselicht scenario (https://github.com/genodelabs/genode/issues/2018), but in my case the new acpica component reports "AcpiOsMapMemory:271 called - dead”. At fist sight this function seem implemented (in acpica/iomem.cc). Based on the log below, can anyone hint me at what might be the problem? Hi, I am currently using a Loader to deploy a subsystem, and in order to improve dynamism, I would like to implement resource trading between the Loader session client and the server. For resource requests, this is pretty straightforward using a notification and the upgrade session facility. However, I would also like the loader to be able to spontaneously yield resources when they are no longer needed. I looked at the yielding facility, but it seemed more focused on direct parent/child trading. Is there a way for a server to yield back resources to its clients symmetrically to the upgrading protocol, ideally that doesn't require modifying the parent interface? Regards, Charles
