why use ambient authority in genode hello world?

In a 2 Dec twitter conversation <https://twitter.com/GenodeLabs/status/671941252162678784>, I was invited to elaborate here; so... I wholeheartedly agree when the Genode book <http://genode.org/documentation/genode-foundations-15-05.pdf> says: *Capability-based security* supposedly makes security easy to use by > providing an > intuitive way to manage authority without the need for an all-encompassing > and > complex global system policy. I don't understand why ignore this principle with the hello world code example: #include <base/printf.h> > int main() > { > Genode::printf("Hello world\n"); > return 0; > } Why appeal to ambient authority to print to the console? Why not pass a capability to main, as pony does with env <https://github.com/CausalityLtd/ponyc/blob/master/packages/builtin/env.pony>, capsicum at cap_enter() <http://lwn.net/Articles/482858/>, etc? At lower levels of the architecture, genode has this structure; e.g. 3.5 component creation: The environment is constructed by successively requesting the component’s > RM, RAM, CPU, and PD sessions from its parent. Problem with custom rm-service

Hi Genode mailing list, the last few days I wrote a server component (called proxy_server) which offers a custom RM-service called "PRM" (Proxy_RM). Under the hood the component maintains a Rm_connection within each Prm_session_component in order to use the original core rm_service. My aim is to intercept all attach and detach operations. Compiling and linking works perfectly but when I run my system scenario (on foc_x86_64) I get the following output: Genode 15.11-71-g2e0e767 int main(): --- create local services --- int main(): --- start init --- int main(): transferred 112 MB to init int main(): --- init created, waiting for exit condition --- [init] Could not open ROM session for module "ld.lib.so" [init -> proxy_server] Proxy::Prm_root::Prm_root(Genode::Rpc_entrypoint*, Genode::Allocator*):Creating PRM_root_component... Genode::Signal_session_component::submit(Genode::Signal_context_capability, unsigned int)::<lambda(Genode::Signal_context_component*)>: invalid signal-context capability Genode::Pager_entrypoint::entry()::<lambda(Genode::Pager_object*)>: Could not resolve pf=401feff8 ip=100b9af Error: Test execution timed out make: *** [run/proxy] Fehler 254 I do not understand where the output: Genode::Signal_session_component::submit(Genode::Signal_context_capability, unsigned int)::<lambda(Genode::Signal_context_component*)>: invalid signal-context capability Genode::Pager_entrypoint::entry()::<lambda(Genode::Pager_object*)>: Could not resolve pf=401feff8 ip=100b9af comes from. AHCI driver problem

Hello list! Description: AHCI driver do not announce service "Block" Environment: Genode: 15.11 MB: ASUS Sabertooth Z87 Driver successfully finds my HD, creates appropriate ATA_driver, and that's all. With verbose messages turning on all went ok but it's impossible to work normally in that mode. Thanks.

Running Ubuntu Snappy under Genode on a SnickerDoodle..?

It's encouraging to find that Genode already provides some support for the Zynq_7000 ARM/FPGA SOC.. I gather SnickerDoodle <http://krtkl.com/> (I will be Alpha testing), supports Ubuntu Snappy booted from an SD card out of the box <https://www.crowdsupply.com/krtkl/snickerdoodle/updates/1992>... My dream here is that Ubuntu Snappy might run under Genode, along side the more real-time oriented I/O and control process.. (that I would not trust to run within Snappy).... that is:I would like the benefits of both Genode, and a mainstream IOT orientated Linux distribution (that someday I hope will become BSD centric ) thus, I write asking for advice as to how I might best get all of these OS parts to play nicely together...and if anyone else has a similar interest for Genode's future directions. -Peter
