Genode on Muen issues

Hi All, Today, I am investigating the use of Genode on Muen as that sounds like a very interesting project in the separations kernel arena. With this in mind, I have started by looking at the: genode/repos/base-hw/doc/x86_64_muen.txt In that document, it says to start by getting the muen repository git clone http://git.codelabs.ch/git/muen.git I started that seem to have gotten most of the repository but the muen.git calls for another git clone: ------------------------------------------------- lonnie@...355...:~$ git clone --recursive http://git.codelabs.ch/git/muen.git Cloning into 'muen'... I am wondering if anyone else has run across this and, if so, then what was your solution? I want to play around with muen a bit, but would wonder if it might, eventually be possible to get virtualbox/genode/muen working since from what I have read on muen, that it still needs a bit of work to support other VM's beyond the simple xv6 VM which apparently was modified to make work (if I understand what was said in the Auguse 29, 2013 muen-report pdf document. Announcement: Genode OS Framework version 15.08 released

The current release is characterized by our efforts to use Genode as day-to-day operating system. From this background, we packed quite a few improvements regarding user GUI experience, VirtualBox robustness and performance, integration of native Genode applications and guest OSes as well as tools to inspect the system behavior into Genode 15.08. Beyond that, we're proud to integrate community contributions as the support to run Genode base-hw on the Muen separation kernel on x86_64 and extended device-driver support for Raspberry Pi and Odroid-X2. Hello All, I hope that everyone's week is starting off well. I am currently working on getting VirtualBox/Genode/NOVA compiled up and am trying to "prepare_port libc" but have found that the http://svn.freebsd.org/base/release/8.2.0/lib/libc seems to be unstable and times out a lot while trying to download the library. [genode] base-hw: SMP support on I.MX6

Hello everyone, I wonder if the current release supports SMP in base-hw. I read from the genode book that base-hw has well supported SMP long time ago. But the default configure in wandBoard sets NR_OF_CPUS to 1. When I change that value to 4 and implement several auxiliary SMP functions and run the program, there seems to be some error happen. Below is the output: core 0 enabled kernel initialized core 1 enabled core 2 enabled core 3 enabled Genode 15.08-25-g5cf8c49 <local changes> int main(): --- create local services --- int main(): --- start init --- The booting is stuck here. I have implemented the corresponding Cpu::start_secondary_cpus, Cpu::primary_id() and Cpu::executing_id(). What else should I implement to boot SMP? Thanks in advance! Best regards, Le Guan

exploring Mesa in Genode

Good day all! By way of introduction: I learned about Genode because of the recent release's experimental support for seL4. Then I noticed that one of the open challenges is to implement a better architecture for direct-rendered 3D. I've been hacking on X for years and wanting to play with 3D on a microkernel, so now I'm trying to figure out what it'd take to tackle the Mesa rework challenge. As a first step, I had trouble following the "getting started" directions. I've filed/commented on GitHub issues for code related things. In the web site documentation, you might mention that you're relying on SDL version 1.2, not the current version 2.0 (in Debian, libsdl1.2-dev). And to get the isohybrid tool I needed the Debian package named syslinux-utils. http://genode.org/documentation/developer-resources/getting_started Now that I can run the linux_x86 and okl4_x86 demos, what steps would you recommend for trying to prototype a multi-process 3D infrastructure? Procedure to build and run virtualbox/genode/nova

Greetings All, Let me first say that I really like the Genode-Foundations 15.05 manual and have worked thorugh the first part through section 2.4 which ends with making NOVA and booting it with the Demo I know that this question has been asked but searching back through the mailing list archives, I cannot seem to locate a clear procedure to set up and run virtualbox under genode under nova. In one mailing list discussion it said to go into the $ cd <genode>/repos/ports $ run/virtualbox and then with a test.iso (tinycore_x86_64.iso) in bin (assuming <genode>/build/nova_x86_64) Perhaps I am missing something, but this did not work? Is there any documentation on the website that I might be able to look at to get an idea? Sorry for the simple questions (in the learning curve now for Genode) as I am trying to get a good understanding of Genode and how it operates as I think that it will be very good for the project that I am working on at the moment. Genode on NOVA or MUEN for Cluster Project

Hi All, Hope that everyone is having a great day. For a very long time now I have been wanting to put together a distributed system cluster project in the form of a Type-1 Hypervisor that would allow for the utilization of commodity desktops that could run 2 or more VMM's concurrently. After some very in-depth and wonderful discussions with Norman Feske about what I would like to accomplish, in the general scope, Norman suggested that I present my ideas for the project to the Genode mailing list to get some community input and possible suggestions on the best approach to move things forward. Based upon what I would like to see for the project, I have been looking at various systems in particular like the NOVA Microhypervisor. I also like what I have seen in the Genode framework and now see that they have good support for VirtualBox as well. In the past, and while digging into NOVA by itself, I downloaded a demo of a very crude system along these lines can be found with the NUL (NOVA UserLand) demo at: http://os.inf.tu-dresden.de/~kauer/nova/ and look at the NUL 0.3 Demo CD (http://os.inf.tu-dresden.de/~jsteckli/nova/NOVA-0.3.iso.bz2) which you can boot (RAM-based) but boot using the “VESA, Broken keyboard” which seems to work, at least here it did. In running the NUL v0.3 NOVA demo, it loads up the NOVA kernel followed by the a piece called "sigma0" which basically handles the instantiation of the various VM's running under their Vancouver VMM. The sigma0 application allows for the context switching of the virtual consoles and I have been able to completely compile the entire NUL sources on a Ubuntu 14.04 hardware test/development-bed that I set up which can reproduce the NUL v0.3 demo iso which can also be run under QEMU as well. With this basic stuff working to get a feel for things, I next wanted to see about building up a new combination that work work just like the NUL v0.3 demo, but have something much more advanced in place. My idea is to have NOVA as the microhypervisor, and in place of the "tutor" instance in the v0.3 demo have Genode for some windowing and user input, as well as to have VirtualBox as the VMM for 2 or more OS instances with one for Windows XP/7 and one for Linux being the background clustering instance. I am hoping that with the sigma0.nul application running on NOVA that I "might" be able to switch consoles through the Genode (nitpicker), Windows XP/7, and Linux, but am not sure on this part. It is very important that the consoles be swtichable with each being fullscreen like in the demo from the NOVA NUL v0.3 as this is a key requirement for the project. Also, I have just run across MUEN which now seems to be supported by Genode 15.08 and which runs Genode in user-space as well which might be some type of a possible option instead of NOVA, but I have not really looked into this yet. Any ideas, suggestions, or comments would be greatly appreciated as way to get the project moving forward. Thanks again and have a wonderful day, Lonnie
