Supporting Genode for RaspberryPi on Fiasco.OC

Hi Genode community Maybe there is anybody interested in use Genode for RaspberryPI with Fiasco.OC as microkernel. I have configured Genode to compile for RaspberryPI with Fiasco.OC (base-foc). I have tested some simple examples from Genode, and its works. Examples on RaspberryPI, using hw platform or Fiasco.OC microkernel, does not recognize the mouse, i don't know where is the problem yet. genode questions

I am a noob and have some platform questions: I see rpi listed in the src tree, but only under the base-hw directory. Does this mean it is supposed but only runs without a ukernel? I don't see any beaglebone or beagleboard platforms in the tree. Is there any support for any of these? If not, are there plans for future support? I notice pandaboard is in the tree, and also built on omap. How similar is the pandaboard to the beagle board? If very similar, what level of effort would be required for a port, and what areas would likely need attention? What ukernel is the "best" / most supported / recommended for genode on ARM at this time? TPM, Haskell and RPC mapped through NOVA

Hi everyone, I'm new to the genode mailing list, so before I start asking questions, I would want to introduce myself. I'm a software developer and entrepreneur and I'm looking for the right tools to build a new product. It will be a cloud platform which focuses on security and privacy. Now, I'm interested in whether Genode could help me with that, and so I would be very thankful if you could help me with the questions I have so far. My first question is whether there is a resource multiplexer for a TPM in Genode? Is there something equivalent to the Virtual Trusted Platform Module in Xen? [1] My second question is how Genode can communicate with a system that is running inside a NOVA hypervisor. Let's say I want to run an unmodified Linux kernel on top of NOVA. Is there some kind of kernel module for Linux that acts as a client/server to some server/client running somewhere else in Genode? In other words, how can RPC be passed into and out of the Linux user space? My next question is how difficult it is to write Genode applications in Haskell. Is there an environment which can run Haskell applications, something similar to the Haskell Lightweight Virtual Machine for Xen? [2] My last question is about the GPL licensing of the Genode OS framework. What licensing requirements are there for the Genode applications? Do they have to be released under a GPL compatible license as well, or can that be closed source components? To put these question into relation, a few words about the software architecture that I have in mind. I want to run Genode at the lowest layer, and then run isolated, normal Linux systems on top of the NOVA hypervisor. The Linux systems should be controlled and managed by a Haskell application that is running directly on Genode and communicates with Linux user space programs through RPC. The PRC for the Linux user space applications should be somehow fed through NOVA and the Linux kernel. The Haskell application might not be available as open source, so that is where the last question is coming from. I would very much appreciate to hear about your thoughts. tz_vmm application in genode

Hi I am using tz_vmm example on i.mx53 qsb. In tz_vmm application, i can manage to transfer integer arguments using general registers (e.g. _vm-> state()->r0=100) from secure world to guest VM (linux). How can i place a string (array of characters) arguments within the registers? They can only store value with data type uint32_t. Thanks in advance. Regards, Abhay

So I should try picocom on both sides? By the way, I'm not using USB for the connection, and both sides will let me access ttyS0. Debug over serial

I have a serial cable and have connected two computers with it, but I haven't been able to figure out how to obtain Genode's boot output. I am currently using the fiasco kernel but I will probably later use fiasco.oc and possibly nova. I heard something about telling the kernel which port to use for the serial output. What do I need to do to look at Genode's boot output over serial?

Performance issues with VBox+Android-x86

Hello everyone, I'm still working on NOVA(64)+VBox+Android_x86 on the Panasonic Toughpad FZ-M1 with Intel Core i5-4302Y CPU (With VT-X). After all the basic stuff is working my problem is that overall performance of the system is very bad. This issue is related to Genode as Android runs fast and with smooth animations on top of Linux+VBox and Linux+Qemu (on the same hardware). Do you have any ideas on what might be causing the performance issues or any hints on where to investigate? Here is what I know so far: I used VBox's built-in performance counters to investigate the issue. Based on these counters I found that a big portion of processing time is spend on 'other' tasks (most often more than 50%). This is described as "Time spent in the VMM or preempted recently." I found that during boot-up a lot of time is spend in the Recompiler, or more specific: on executing recompiled code. Here is an example of the performance counter as found after Android booted to welcome screen: /PROF/REM/Runcode 52808 ticks/call (112541953198 ticks, 2131148 times, max 9428119254, min 116) What surprises me here is the max value. Several billion ticks (should correspond to several seconds of processing time) seems to be very much for instruction emulation. However, only a small amount of time is spend in Runcode once Android is booted up. So if this is an issue, it would only speed up the boot. I also had a look at the graphics backend and found that a significant amount of time is spend on framebuffer updates. Here it might be possible to do some optimizations. However, tests showed that this is a not the major problem. The calculation done between two frames takes too long, in comparison the update of the frame itself is only a minor part. Recently there was a issue and a related commit added on github by Christian Prochaska. https://github.com/genodelabs/genode/issues/1284 I pulled this commit along with a chain of preceding changes. This significantly improved performance to a somewhat usable level but it is still way too slow. So far I did not test if this specific commit or some of the preceding commits are responsible for the increase in performance. All best Christian

Genode doesn't see init when booting from grub2 on hard drive

I've installed Genode on a partition on my hard drive, and configured Grub2 to boot it. However, Genode cannot find the ROM module "init". I configured Grub2 correctly--I used multiboot and added all the modules, including init. Note that I can boot from a cd with no problems besides graphics issues. I don't see any reason for the error besides Grub2 loading the modules differently. Is there any fix to make Genode compatible with Grub2? Could someone else try using Grub2 and see whether they get the same error?
