I ask this given that the weaver.xml file refers to memsections and pds (i'm assuming that means protection domains). Hello, as the end of the year is approaching, it's time to make up our minds about the focus of the project in 2012. There are numerous directions we may head to, for example, we could advance our ARM support to move towards the mobile space (tablets and smart phones), or put emphasis on multi-processor support and NUMA, new kernel platforms could be explored, or we could bring forward our ambitions to combine Genode with reconfigurable hardware. However, for me personally, the biggest leap … [View More]would be to start using Genode as everyday platform for my personal computing needs. I am convinced that the framework has reached the maturity and the essential functionality to make this vision come true in 2012. Using our platform for productive work would provide us with the incentive to address real-world problems that matter for actual users - simply because we would be demanding users. Furthermore, there is no better way to show the conviction that we have in our technology than to use it ourself. Therefore, I propose "Eating our own dog food" as the grand theme of our project for the next year. To schedule our road map, we should first become aware of our actual computing needs and then sensibly prioritize those requirements. I'll start with a brief list of software functionalities that I need. Fundamental: * VIM * Shell (e.g., bash) * Tool chain (coreutils, gcc, binutils, make, findutils, tar, Tcl, expect) * Persistent file system * Block-device encryption * SSH client * Git client * GNUPG * Web browser (also used for email, don't need multi-media stuff) * PDF viewer * A way to run a just-compiled Genode sub system * Interactive python shell (to be used as a calculator) * Screen lock * A fall-back virtual machine running Linux for carrying out sporadic work with images (Gimp, Povray, ImageMagick, etc.) and LaTeX, and for testing the Linux version of Genode Of course, there are further things I desire that are not fundamentally important but would make the experience much more enjoyable. Add-ons: * Tiled window manager (similar to the wonderful ion3) * Intel wireless driver * Media player (at least for playing music) * Thinkpad ACPI support, fan daemon * Qemu * Tuxpaint This list is surprisingly short. With Noux already having reached the state where we can execute VIM natively, supporting the other command-line tools will, for the most part, be a matter of enhancing Noux (i.e., adding support for the fork syscall). In addition, I have the immediate goal to release a new live CD by February 2012. Ideally, the demo scenarios featured on the new live CD should give a glimpse on how Genode will be used a general- purpose OS. Do you agree with the proposal of the overall theme for 2012? dear christian helmuth, Here i attached the client-server program used in genodetoolchain. Basically i'm trying to build a client-server program with encryption facilities. But problem i'm facing here is while sending a string from client to server only the first character in the string is received remaining characters were scrambled.please kindly give some suggestion. How to run Genode with L4Linux having only one RS232 port

Hello! I am trying Genode on some different ARM platforms such as: a) Nvidia Tegra 250 (Development Kit board) b) Beagle board (www.beagleboard.org) I have no problem to build and run Genode having FOC kernel support for these boards (working via UART terminal without graphics) But to run L4 Linux the Terminal session is needed, and that session can only be provided via user (not kernel) UART. Hi, I am new to Genode, and still trying to understand how it works. But I've build several test using L4Ka::Pistachio base and of course Linux-based. I've found some very interesting ports while browsing $(GENODE_DIR)/libports, particularly the filesystem and block device related stuffs, because I don't know how to access the harddisk so far, unless using L4Linux with Fiasco.OC. couldn't configure Networksettings in the genode....

Respected sir, This is pruthiviraj.b from sastra university.I tried to boot the genode iso in the virtualbox.i followed all the procedures that is avaliable in the genode forum.But i couldn't configure the network settings in that tinycorelinux .I changed networksettings to bridge adapter but still i'm facing the same problem.Kindly send needed guidelines. In 2008, he co-founded Genode Labs - a company with the mission to transform this OS technology from an once obscure research project to a next-generation main-stream OS. [Estimated duration] 45 min [Abstract] Today's operating systems try to find a balance between seemingly conflicting goals. Ease of use is traded against security, resource utilization is traded against resource accountability, and system complexity is traded against scalability. For example, SELinux is ill famed as hard to use and consequently remains widely unused. As another example, isolation kernels minimize the complexity of critical system software but at the cost of limiting these solutions to static applications. The Genode OS architecture shows how these apparently inherent conflicts can be solved by operating-system design. By combining a recursive system structure with capability-based security, mandatory access control becomes easy to deploy. At the same time, the trusted computing base can be minimized for each application individually such that the attack surface for security-critical system functions gets reduced by orders of magnitude compared to existing approaches. Furthermore, a concept for trading physical resources among processes allows for dynamic workloads while maintaining quality of service. That is not just theory - the system is ready for demonstration and its developers are planning to use it as development environment by the end of 2012. After a brief introduction of where Genode comes from, the main part of the talk will be focused on the OS architecture and give a glimpse at the implementation via live demonstrations.
