First of all, thanks for the amazing reversing work and explanation!
I only silently followed the discussions on GitHub about the RPi,
since I didn't have any findings to contribute.

I integrated your "brutal" fix and did a short test with a RPi 3.
Networking seems to work and the error seems to be eliminated.

I used it in conjunction with the dwc driver,
so your hypothesis seems to be correct.
