As suggested by https://github.com/genodelabs/genode/issues/1264
overriding the width as a temporary workaround worked:
width = mode_info->bytes_per_scanline / (mode / 8);
printf("overriding width to %d\n", width);
which reports:
[init -> fb_drv] overriding width to 1696
[init -> fb_drv] Using video mode: 1696 x 1050 x 16
and no more distortion...
