Yeeha! That and a tweaked path:

vi ~/.bashrc
export PATH=$PATH:/sbin

(needed for resize2fs) and I got an image that worked, yay!

I think I'll give it a shot on metal, next. Then I'll try doing the 
fancier build and tweaking on the wifi.
